Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is having a forgettable campaign in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Expectations were sky-high from the former India skipper after his brilliant campaign in this year's IPL.

The right-handed batsman enjoyed a stellar IPL season and finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer. While no other batter could even reach 600 runs in the competition, Virat Kohli scored an impressive 741 runs with the help of one century and five half-centuries. He also became the first Indian player to finish an IPL season as the highest run-scorer twice.

However, Virat Kohli has failed to replicate his performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup so far. He started his campaign with a 1-run knock against Ireland before scoring 4 against Pakistan. In the third game, he could not even open his account against the USA.

After scoring only 5 runs from 3 games in the group games, Virat Kohli finally managed to reach double digits with the bat in the ongoing Super 8s game against Afghanistan. The batting superstar got the start but could not convert it into a big score. He scored run-a-ball 24 before being sent back by Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan.

After the poor outing with the bat, Virat Kohli had another forgettable moment on the field against Afghanistan as he dropped a straightforward catch. In the third over, he dropped Ibrahim Zadran while fielding at backward point. The ball was over Kohli's head but not a very difficult chance especially for someone like him. However, he ended up making a mess of the chance. Rohit Sharma was stunned looking at the dropped catch and had his hands on his head.

Fortunately for India, the drop did not prove costly as Zadran could score only 2 more runs after the drop before being dismissed by Axar Patel for 8.

Talking about the game, India have posted a competitive total of 181 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav starred with the bat for India, scoring 53 runs from 28 balls. In reply, Afghanistan were on 29 for 3 in the sixth over at the time of writing this report.

Rashid Khan, Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav, on Thursday (June 20), starred with the bat to power India to a competitive total against Afghanistan in the Super 8s clash between the two teams.

Batting first, India were in a spot of bother after losing some early wickets. Captain Rohit Sharma departed inside the powerplay while Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli got the starts but could not capitalize on them. Shivam Dube failed to get going as well, as India found themselves reeling at 90 for 4 in the 11th over.

However, Suryakumar Yadav bailed the team out of trouble with his second consecutive fifty in the ongoing tournament. The right-handed batsman scored 53 runs off 28 balls with the help of 5 fours and 3 sixes. During his knock, the India star did not shy away from taking on Rashid Khan as well.

Even though the Afghanistan skipper had dismissed Pant and Kohli in quick succession, Suryakumar did not shy away from taking him on. He brought out the sweep shot to negate Rashid's threat, hitting the leg spinner for two fours and a six. As Suryakumar won the battle, Rashid was seen having a lighthearted chat with the India star and the spinner even grabbed the batter by his helmet during the conversation.

"Stop sweeping me, he says," said Ravi Shastri on air as he tried to decode Rashid's message to the India batter.

I enjoy batting from in the most difficult phase: Suryakumar Yadav:

Speaking at the end of the innings, Suryakumar Yadav opened up on his batting and said that he enjoys batting in the middle overs which is usually considered the most challenging phase. The Mumbai star also stated that he likes to face challenges and backed himself to do well in the game after Kohli's dismissal.

"That's what I have practised, I enjoy batting from (7-15 overs) that's the most difficult phase where the opposition bowlers look to control things. I like to take charge in that phase, I enjoy it.

"I started chewing my gum harder when he (Kohli) got out. I just backed my game and my instincts. I have played a lot of cricket with him (Rohit Sharma) and now under him, he understands my game. He knows my game, so he sits back and enjoys it. It's a good total, let's see what happens now," said Suryakumar Yadav.

Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja

India batter Virat Kohli wasn't amazed at the way his teammate Ravindra Jadeja got out in the ongoing T20 World 2024 game against Afghanistan. The Super 8 fixture of the game between the teams is underway at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Ravindra Jadeja didn't have the kind of outing he would've wanted with the bat in the ongoing game against Afghanistan. His torrid run with the bat continued as he failed to finish the innings on high for Team India at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Ravindra Jadeja was promoted ahead of Axar Patel but the move didn't work as he failed to set the stage on fire. He got out on a delivery which he could've avoided but his tentativeness saw him getting out early during the 19th over of the first innings.

Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled a slower bouncer that was very high and it looked a clear wide had the batter left the ball. But he chased the ball and went to cut it and mistimed it to short third to take a long walk back to the pavilion after scoring 7 runs off 4 balls.

What caught the attention of many was the reaction of Virat Kohli after Ravindra Jadeja got out. The batter, who was sitting in the dugout, looked furious with the shot selection of the all-rounder and even abused him. The video went viral on the internet. Here's the clip:

After Ravindra Jadeja got out, Axar Patel played a crucial hand of 12 runs and powered India to a total of 181 runs. Earlier with the bat, it was Suryakumar Yadav who shined and slammed a half-century that rescued India's innings after they lost early wickets.

With the ball then India was nothing short of exceptional. Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets and gave away just seven runs. Arshdeep Singh also picked three scalps while Kuldeep Yadav bagged two scalps as Rohit Sharma-led side bundled out the opposition for 134 runs to win the game by 47 runs.

Benefits of having the best batter in the world on your side - Sanjay Manjrekar praises Suryakumar Yadav

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar was in awe of the way Suryakumar Yadav batted in the game against Afghanistan. He said that having a batter to his quality benefits the team a lot and 181 wouldn't possible had he not been there. Taking to his Twitter account, he explained:

"Benefits of having the best batter in the world in your side. Surya Kumar Yadav! Only one winner at the halfway stage after India got 181. Well done Team India!"

Suryakumar Yadav came to bat when India was reeling at 62/3. He came out all guns blazing and changed the complexion of the game with his sensational batting. He scored 53 runs off 28 balls. He batted with a strike rate of around 190 and also hit 5 fours and 3 sixes in his innings.

Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant

India, on Thursday (June 20), thrashed Afghanistan by 47 runs to start their Super 8s campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 in a stunning fashion.

On a tough pitch where batters struggled to time the ball, India came up with an all-round display to see off Afghanistan. After Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first, India were in a spot of bother. Rohit departed for just 8 before Rishabh Pant (20) and Virat Kohli (24) failed to score big as well to leave India reeling at 62 for 3.

However, Suryakumar Yadav stood firm at one end and scored his second fifty in a row to help the team post a competitive total of 181 for 8. He scored 53 runs off 28 balls with the help of 5 fours and 3 sixes. The right-handed batsman also shared a crucial 60-run stand with Hardik Pandya who scored 32 runs.

In reply, Afghanistan were bowled out for 134. The Rashid Khan-led side never really looked in contention to chase down the total as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals right from the start. They lost three wickets inside the powerplay to find themselves reeling at 23 for 3.

They never really managed to recover after the early blows and were eventually all out for 134. For India, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh picked up 3 wickets each while Kuldeep Yadav picked up 2 wickets.

Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant's mid-match selfie:

As India were dominating the proceedings on the field, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant decided to take a mid-match selfie. They decided to pose for the camera in the 16th over when India were celebrating a wicket. On the second ball of the over, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Najibullah Zadran to reduce Afghanistan to 102 for 6 and all but sealed their fate.

With the fate of the game pretty much decided in India's favor, Hardik Pandya decided to have some fun. The India allrounder was the one who held one of the on-field cameras for the selfie before Rishabh Pant joined in and posed for the photo. The wicketkeeper-batsman was also seen flashing the victory sign as he and Pandya took the photo.

India vs Afghanistan

Fans on Twitter reacted after India started their Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on a high note. They defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados in a Group 1 encounter on Thursday (20th June).

Opting to bat, India didn’t have the kind of start they would have wanted as skipper Rohit Sharna (8) fell early. Rishabh Pant (20), who walked in at three, played a brutal cameo but couldn’t carry on. He along with Virat Kohli (24) added 43 runs but both batters lost their wickets within a span of two overs.

India were left tottering at 62 for three and it was at that time when Suryakumar Yadav (53) took center stage. Hardik Pandya (32) supported him well as the duo bailed India out of trouble and made sure they take team to a good total.

Axar Patel scored a quick-fire 12 runs in the end that powered India to 181/8 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. For Afghanistan, Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of three for 26.

In the chase, Afghanistan were off to the worst possible start with the bat. Jasprit Bumrah removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11) and Hazratullah Zazai (2) early. Axar Patel then chipped in too and removed Ibrahim Zadran (8) as the batting team lost three wickets for just 23 runs.

Gulbadin Naib (17) and Azmatullah Omarzai (26) tried to stitch the partnership but couldn’t as Indian bowlers chipped in with wickets at regular intervals and left the opposition tottering at 114/7. They bundled out the Rashid Khan-led side for 134 runs to win the game by 47 runs. Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets and gave away just seven runs. Arshdeep Singh also picked three scalps while Kuldeep Yadav bagged two scalps.

Azmatullah Omarzai

Azmatullah Omarzai, on Thursday (June 20), hit one of the biggest sixes of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 during the Super 8s game against India at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

Chasing 182 to start their Super 8s campaign with a win, Afghanistan were off to a poor start. Their in-form opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz tried to attack every ball and paid the price by edging a wide delivery behind the stumps. He departed for 11 runs in the second over.

Hazratullah Zazai (2) and Ibrahim Zadran (8) could not even reach the double-digit mark as Afghanistan found themselves reeling at 23 for 3 inside the powerplay. Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai then stopped the rot with a 44-run stand before departing in quick succession.

Azmatullah Omarzai departed after scoring 26 runs off 20 balls. And while the Afghan allrounder could not bail his team out of trouble, he managed to make his presence felt by hitting Ravindra Jadeja for a huge six. The right-handed batter welcomed the India allrounder into the attack by hitting his very first ball for a six that traveled as long as 100 meter over long-on.

Watch the six from Azmatullah Omarzai:

Talking about the game, India are very much in the driver's seat. At the time of writing this report, Afghanistan were reeling at 120 for 7 in the 18th over while chasing 182. They still need more than 60 runs in less than 3 overs to cause an upset.

Earlier in the game, India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's fifty to recover from a poor start and post a competitive total of 181 for 8 after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. India were reeling at 62 for 3 at one stage before Suryakumar's fifty rescued the innings.

The right-handed batsman scored 53 runs off 28 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes. Hardik Pandya also played a crucial knock of 32 runs. After the game against Afghanistan, India will be taking on Bangladesh and Australia in their next Super 8s games.

Rashid Khan's

The Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan National Cricket Team played their first match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage against the Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday, June 20.

Afghanistan were not able to play good cricket against the Men In Blue and were completely outplayed in the game, losing by a hefty margin of 47 runs. While bowling first, they let the Indian team post a great total of 181 for 8 on the board with Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan dazzling in the innings as they bagged three wickets.

With the bat, Afghanistan just couldn't get going and they were bundled out for 134 in 20 overs, with Azmatullah Omarzai being the top run-getter for the side. The all-rounder hit 26 runs while other batters failed to step up.

Speaking after the match, the Afghan skipper Rashid Khan stated that the surface was good to bat on and they backed themselves to chase down a total of 170-180. Rashid Khan said:

"That was a surface we thought we could chase 170-180. You just go there and how you play. Against bigger teams, we should be thinking we will have to chase such scores."

Rashid Khan further spoke about himself and said that his body is feeling well after his struggles in the recently concluded season of the Indian Premier League. Rashid Khan also exposed the weakness of Afghanistan, saying that they forget their skills sometimes and need to utilize them properly.

"Body is feeling well. I struggled a little in the IPL. I am hitting the areas consistently now. We have enjoyed everywhere we have played. We forget our own skills sometimes. If the conditions are there, we will look to use it."

What Happened In Previous ICC T20 World Cup Matches Between India And Afghanistan

Before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 clash between India and Afghanistan, the two teams had met thrice in the T20 World Cups with the Men In Blue winning all three matches.

The Afghans and the Men In Blue locked horns with each other in the third match of ICC World T20 2010 on May 1 at the Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. The Nawroz Mangal-led side weren't able to display a good batting performance in the match, which saw them getting restricted to 115/8. With the ball, they were not up to the mark either and allowed MS Dhoni & Co. to complete the run-chase in 14.5 overs. The Indian team comprehensively won the match by 7 wickets with 31 balls remaining.

In the 2012 T20 World Cup, these two teams went head-to-head with each other in the 3rd match of the competition at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on September 19. The match once again saw the proper dominance from the Indian team as first they posted a good total of 159/5 on the board and then bundled out the opposition team for 136 to register a comfortable 23-run win.

Then, India and Afghanistan faced off each other in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 on November 3 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi. In that match, the Virat Kohli-led side won a one-sided encounter by 66 runs as they first scored 210 for 2 and then allowed the Afghan team to register just 144 for 7 on the board.

Rohit Sharma

The first ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage match of Group 1 saw the clash between the Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan National Cricket Team at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados on Thursday, June 20.

The Indian team delivered a great performance in the match to register a comprehensive 47-run victory. With the bat Suryakumar Yadav (53) and Hardik Pandya (32) shined and helped the side post 181/8 on the board. When it came to defending the total, Jasprit Bumrah (3), Arshdeep Singh (3), Kuldeep Yadav (2), Axar Patel (1) and Ravindra Jadeja (1) did a good job and bowled out the opposition team for 134 runs.

Speaking after the match, Rohit Sharma highlighted that the Indian team played quite a few matches in the Caribbean in the last few years which has helped them to prepare well. He stated:

"The last two years, we have come here and played some T20 games. We planned a little well. We adapted well to the conditions that were offered. We knew the class of our bowling lineup would defend this."

Rohit Sharma lauded his teammates next, saying that everyone is doing a brilliant job and he also gave a special shoutout to Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. He stated:

"Everyone coming in and doing their job. That is something we keep talking about. Surya and Hardik's partnership was a good one in the end."

While talking about Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian captain said that they need to use the pacer smartly as he is a game-changer. Rohit Sharma said:

"We know what Bumrah can do for us. It is important for us to use him smartly. He is the one who is ready to take the responsibility aWhereverhereever he plays, he is always ready to take the responsibility. I got to assess the conditions. Looking at the opposition we are ready to make any changes. We thought three spinners would be good, we went for that. Going forward if needed, I am open to playing three seamers."

India vs Afghanistan Head-to-head Record

India National Cricket Team have been a team that have always dominated the Afghanistan National Cricket Team and the record speaks for itself. Before their T20 World Cup 2024 match, they played 13 games against each other across formats, and in all those games the results went in India's favor.

Speaking about the T20Is, India, and Afghanistan had faced off each other a total of eight times, since their first meeting at the 2010 T20 World Cup in Grost Islet.

Out of those matches, the Men In Blue successfully won 7 games, including a victory in the double Super Over in January 2024, while one game between the teams was washed out. The match that was abandoned was the final of the Hangzhou Asian Games last year and the washout saw India bagging a gold medal based on higher seeding.

When it comes to ODIs, Afghanistan have played against India four times and never won any game while in Test cricket, the Asian teams played just one game where India handed a heavy defeat of an innings and 262 runs to Afghanistan.

Now after the conclusion of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 clash between the teams, the head-to-head record in T20Is stands at India 8 - Afghanistan 0, and in international cricket, it is India 14 - Afghanistan 0.

Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant

India captain Rohit Sharma looked in a joyous mood during the game against Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. The Super 8 fixture between the teams took place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday (20th) July.

India captain Rohit Sharma had a great outing as skipper of the team in the game against Afghanistan. He displayed a magnificent performance as skipper of the team and made sure that his team got off to a flier in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Rohit Sharma made brilliant bowling changes along with the field placements. The bowlers too repaid the faith of the captain and made sure that they came up with a magical effort with the ball to wrap up the game and win the game by a massive margin to make their case strong for the next stage.

Rohit Sharma was also involved in a hilarious moment with Rishabh Pant after the keeper-batter took the catch of Gulbadin Naib. It was during the 11th over of the innings when Kuldeep Yadav bowled a googly to which the Afghanistan batter tried to launch it.

Gulbadin Naib didn't get the proper connection as the ball got high in the air. Rishabh Pant, who was behind the stumps, called for the catch and skipper Rohit Sharma, who was coming to take the catch stopped and the keeper-batter completed an easy catch to dismiss the batter.

What caught the attention of many was the reaction of Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant after the catch. Here's the video:

Afghanistan lost early wickets in the chase and Gulbadin Naib with his 17-run knock kept the team in the hunt. But he couldn’t carry on Indian bowlers chipped in with wickets at regular intervals and bundled out the Rashid Khan-led side for 134 runs to win the game by 47 runs.

Earlier with the bat, Surykumar Yadav had a sensational outing with the bat and made sure that India posted a big total on the board. The batter ended with an innings of 53 runs off 28 balls. He batted with a strike rate of around 190 and also hit 5 fours and 3 sixes in his innings. His knock ensured that India posted a total of 180-run mark at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

India too good for Afghanistan - Irfan Pathan

After India's win over Afghanistan, Irfan Pathan came up with a praising message for the Rohit Sharma-led side. The former India all-rounder lauded Jasprit Bumrah for his heroics and also hailed Suryakumar Yadav's batting against Rashid Khan. Taking to his Twitter account, he explained:

"India is too good for Afghanistan. Brilliant from Bumrah again. How good he is on setting the tone for the bowling department. Keep going strong boys."

Jasprit Bumrah and Rahmullah Gurbaz

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah was at his exceptional best with the ball in the game against Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024 game. The Super 8 encounter of the tournament between the teams took place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.

After India posted a total of 181 runs on the board, Jasprit Bumrah came up with a superlative effort with the new ball. He drew the first blood for his team when he removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz and made the batter's statement on Indian bowlers backfire in the game.

Ahead of the game between India and Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz made a bold statement and said that he doesn't have Jasprit Bumrah as his only target but he would be looking to take all the bowlers to the cleaners. Speaking to the ICC, he had stated:

"Honestly, my target is not just Jasprit Bumrah. I will look to target all (Indian) bowlers five bowlers generally bowl and I have to tackle them. It's just a battle against Bumrah. Maybe another bowler could get me out. But yes, If I get a chance to hit him (Bumrah), let's go for it. It could be Bumrah, Arshdeep or Siraj. If anyone bowls in my area, then I'll hit them. Either I'll hit them or I will get out.”

Rahmanullah Gurbaz stood tall on his statement in the first over as he slammed Arshdeep Singh for a six and a four in the first over. But in the very next over, Jasprit Bumrah oozed his class with the ball and sent the batter packing on the second ball that he bowled to him.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled a slower ball very wide outside off to which Rahmanullah Gurbaz went chasing after it. He tried to hit the ball out of the park but managed just an outside edge that was caught by the keeper Rishabh Pant with ease.
