Jasprit Bumrah

Former India cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Anil Kumble were all praises for Jasprit Bumrah after his outstanding figures in India's opening Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Afghanistan.

Jasprit Bumrah was on fire on a slower pitch at Kensington Oval, Barbados as he picked up 3 wickets and gave away just 7 runs in his four overs. Bumrah also bowled a maiden in his spell, which is a rarity in T20 cricket.

The 30-year-old fast bowler drew first blood when he dismissed a dangerous-looking Rahmanullah Gurbaz for just 11 runs in just his second ball of the match. Bumrah did not stop here and got the wicket of Hazratullah Zazai off a well-disguised slower one, which the batter chipped to the point region.

He came back in the death and dismissed Najibullah Zadran for 19 to end any of Afghanistan's hopes for a win. Afghanistan's batters didn't have any answer to Bumrah's superb bowling as they were bundled out for just 134 runs in 20 overs.

Sanjay Manjrekar's huge statement on Jasprit Bumrah

While speaking to ESPNCricinfo, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar claimed that there is a huge difference between the other bowlers in the world and Bumrah and India are fortunate to have him.

"There were many matches when we had not conceded the boundary and look at the difference between him and the couple of other seamers," Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo.

"They were also international standard, but quite rightly I mean, he's looking even better and when you look at all the top-class bowlers around the world. There's a big margin between them and Bumrah and India is so fortunate to have him in your playing 11," Manjrekar added.

'He has the kind of understanding of his own bowling' - Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble, who was in the same panel with Sanjay Manjrekar was also impressed with Bumrah's performance. Kumble mentioned that Bumrah has a great understanding of his bowling, which makes him such a good bowler. The legendary leg-spinner also claimed added that executing the variations isn't easy but Bumrah has the skill to do it.

"He has the kind of understanding of his own bowling. You can make out even when he got good players out. That slower ball, wide line, he gets the execution perfect. It's about variations. Every bowler has variations but executing those variations under pressure, getting the line and length right for each batsman," Kumble stated.

"He would have figured that out and then doing it right in the big game. It doesn't come easy. In this entire tournament, I'm sure he has not given one boundary," he added.

Jasprit Bumrah has incredible numbers in the T20 World Cup 2024 so far. He picked up 8 wickets in four matches so far at an average of just 6.50 and an astonishing economy rate of 3.46. He was adjudged Player of the Match in India's first two matches this tournament, against Ireland and Pakistan.

India's next match will be against Bangladesh on June 22 in Antigua. Following that, they will travel to St. Lucia for their last Super 8 match on June 24 against Australia.

Jasprit Bumrah and Irfan Pathan

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan hailed Jasprit Bumrah as the backbone of Team India's bowling attack after another powerful performance in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Bumrah was instrumental in India’s 47-run win over Afghanistan in the Super-8 clash in Barbados. Bumrah finished with incredible figures of 3/7 in his quota of four overs against Afghanistan, as the Indian cricket team successfully defended 181 runs to win their first Super-8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 20.

Irfan Pathan compares Jasprit Bumrah to the Reserve Bank of India for his reliability in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024

After the match, Pathan compared Bumrah to the "Reserve Bank of India" for his reliability and impact, praising his ability to shift momentum and change the game's tempo. He pointed out Bumrah's strategic brilliance in the Super-8 match, where he damaged the momentum gained by Afghanistan early in their chase after an expensive first over by Arshdeep Singh.

Bumrah's introduction in the second over saw an immediate impact with the crucial wicket of Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz and a disciplined bowling display throughout different phases of the innings. Pathan also hailed Bumrah's use of variations, particularly his effective deployment of slower balls to control the game's pace and unsettle the batters.

Irfan Pathan said on Star Sports: “He is like the Reserve Bank of India. He is absolutely safe. You expect him to perform when he bowls four overs in any situation. He sets up the game. How does he do that? Twelve runs had come in the first over bowled by Arshdeep (Singh), which means Afghanistan had got the momentum.”

The commentator added, “He (Bumrah) came in the second over and started putting an impact as soon as he came in. The wickets he took and the way he bowled in different phases, he bowled six slower balls in the first six overs, which means he sets the bowling tone. No one sets the bowling tone better than Jasprit Bumrah in world cricket. He is the top-most in Indian bowling.”

Jasprit Bumrah is the top-most in Indian bowling: Irfan Pathan

Highlighting Bumrah's mastery of line and length, Pathan described him as a bowler who strategically uses bouncers sparingly but effectively when needed. He credited Bumrah for consistently setting high standards in world cricket with his ability to execute under pressure and adapt to various match situations.

The commentator believes that Bumrah will be extremely lethal at the business end of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, especially at the end of the innings, and it will be a big factor for the Men in Blue if they want to win the ICC trophy.

Pathan signed off by saying, “The biggest thing in this World Cup is that when Jasprit Bumrah will come to bowl in the end, you will get to see a little reverse as well. It's a very big factor if India have to win this World Cup. No bowler will complain. Batters might complain that they are playing during the day but all bowlers will say they are getting a dry ball.”

Sanjay Manjrekar and Suryakumar Yadav

Former Indian cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Anil Kumble heaped praise on Suryakumar Yadav for his match-winning knock against Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. Sanjay Manjrekar described Suryakumar Yadav as one of the best T20 batters in the world after India's first victory in the Super 8 stage.

Suryakumar Yadav shone with the bat in India's first Super 8 match at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday, June 20. The right-handed batter scored 53 runs off 28 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes. Yadav received the "Player of the Match" award for his batting performance on a tricky pitch.

Suryakumar Yadav Chips The Balls Over The Infield - Sanjay Manjrekar

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo's TimeOut show, Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted Suryakumar Yadav's impact on the Indian team, especially on challenging pitches. Manjrekar mentioned Yadav's ability to find gaps with ground shots, stating that he doesn't solely rely on hitting sixes.

"This is the advantage India have for having one of the best T20 batters in the world. Tricky pitch, Rashid Khan on song and again you saw the value that Suryakumar Yadav brings to any team," Manjrekar said.

"And again the thing to like about him which is not really highlighted much is the amount of ground shots that he plays. He chips the balls over the infield in the gaps. So, he's not somebody who's always looking for sixes which means sometimes there can be miss-execution trying to extract power," he added.

India got off to a disappointing start after winning the toss. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 8 runs off 13 balls in the third over. Rishabh Pant played a quickfire cameo of 20 runs off 11 before being dismissed by Rashid Khan. Suryakumar came in to bat when the team was under pressure at 54/2 in 7 overs.

The 33-year-old batter demonstrated positive intent against the Afghanistan bowlers. Yadav scored his second consecutive half-century in the tournament. He was dismissed after reaching the half-century mark. The Men in Blue managed to score 181 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Don't Know Where To Bowl - Anil Kumble

During the same discussion, Anil Kumble said that Suryakumar Yadav's presence adds power and stroke play at number four, putting pressure on opposition bowlers. Kumble highlighted the significance of Suryakumar regaining form in the Super Eights for India.

"It (Suryakumar's presence) gives India the kind of power and stroke play that you need from someone who's batting at number four. It certainly puts pressure on the opposition bowlers because it's not easy to control a Surya in this kind of a form," said Kumble.

"You don't know where to bowl, wherever you bowl, you find it hard to stop him from scoring boundaries. So, yeah, it certainly augurs well. First game of the Super 8s and you have Surya coming back into this kind of form," Kumble added.

The Rohit Sharma-led team is currently in second place in the Group 1 table with two points and a net run rate (NRR) of +2.350. The Indian team will face the Bangladesh team in their next match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Saturday, June 22.

Salman Butt and Mohammad Hafeez

Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt lashed out at the ex-director of cricket of the team Mohammad Hafeez for criticizing Babar Azam and management for not prioritizing fitness during the chat with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan. He slammed Hafeez by questioning him why he didn't do anything about it as he too was part of the team at that time.

Mohammad Hafeez, who was appointed as the Director of Pakistan Cricket after 2023, made some shocking revelations about the fitness issues in the Pakistan team on Friday (21st June). The former skipper of the team talked about how previous management led by Mickey Arthur and Grant Bradburn didn't handle the team well.

Speaking to Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist on the Clube Prairie podcast, Mohammad Hafeez revealed that during his tenure as Director of the team, he got to know from the team's trainer that Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Babar Azam asked players to not focus on fitness and let them be as they wanted to be for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Mohammad Hafeez revealed that he even asked the trainer to resign if he didn't have the authority to take control. But the trainer replied to him that he was doing whatever the team management was asking him to do. The former skipper stated this was one of the reasons why players looked fatigued during the Australia Tests.

"When I retired from this team, I ticked all the boxes of fitness. If I could do it at the age of 41, then why can’t the others? As I joined the team as Director, I noticed the fat percentage of the players had gone up, and the running ability went down. I asked the trainer what had happened. Why the players aren’t able to go through the tests?

“He revealed a very shocking fact that the last management, comprising Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Babar Azam, asked him to put the fitness equation out and let the players play how wanted to play till the World Cup 2023. I was like, why didn't you resign straight away if you feel like someone is asking you not to do your job?

"Just say that this is not the way to deal with international cricketers, so he said, I can't do anything because at that time, whatever management said to me, I followed their directions. That was why we were struggling in the final innings of the Test series against Australia. We looked fatigued because we were missing that fitness level," Hafeez stated.

Salman Butt slams Mohammad Hafeez for his comments

Mohammad Hafeez making such comments didn't go well with Salman Butt. He lashed out at the former skipper of the team, saying that if things weren't correct, then it was his duty to streamline things because he was the Director of the team. He thrashed Hafeez for degrading the team when he had the opportunity to make things right. Speaking on Sports Trend, he explained:

"Okay, I don't know, I wasn't with him. Maybe he's right. But who was going to ensure this? This is the same thing, that you file a complaint at your house after coming out. You're the team director. Okay? You're the one who's going to hire people. You hired such a person as a coach, you put such a person on the tour, who might have never been there on his own. You did all that. You couldn't take the fitness test. What kind of helplessness is this? Call it helplessness, call it incompetence, or call it your lack of control, or a question mark on your leadership.

"They're your contemporaries, they're juniors to you. You couldn't take the test from them. And now you're saying, Adam (Gilchrist), look, I wanted this. So look, they didn't listen to me. And look, they don't listen to me. I was the team director. For God's sake. What are you trying to say? Will you consult yourself first if you want to talk or not? No one listened to me. As long as someone doesn't fire you, no one leaves a job for you. Okay? And then you make such complaints. You go to the fourth world and say, this is what was happening. So look, they didn't listen to me. So then you say there, they don't listen to me, I'm coming back."

Salman Butt concluded by touching on the topic of Mohammad Amir, saying that when Hafeez himself picked the pacer in the team it was okay but if someone did that he is a sinner. He explained:

"Or give me so much power, or give me so much backing. You've put your will everywhere. So I do not know what to agree with and what to not agree with. Now, when someone else picks Amir, it's a sin, but when he picks himself, it's permissible. If he becomes a coach, then it's permissible for him to come. If he doesn't come, then it's not permissible for him to come," he concluded.
