Nehal Wadhera, Mohsin Khan

Mohsin Khan, on Tuesday (April 30), castled Nehal Wadhera with a beauty to deny him his first fifty of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024).

Lucknow Super Giants welcomed Mumbai Indians in the 48th game of the ongoing competition. LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first. His decision was totally justified by his bowlers as they reduced MI to 27 for 4 in the sixth over.

Mohsin Khan gave LSG the first breakthrough by dismissing Rohit Sharma for 4 before Marcus Stoinis dismissed Suryakumar Yadav for 10. Tilak Varma was run out for 7 while Hardik Pandya was sent back by Naveen-ul-Haq for a duck in the final over of the powerplay.

As a result, Nehal Wadhera had to walk out to bat in the sixth over. The youngster and Ishan Kishan managed to stop the rot with a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket. Ravi Bishnoi broke the stand by dismissing Kishan for 32 in the 14th over.

Nehal Wadhera and Tim David then took the MI score past the 100-run mark. With the southpaw well set, it looked like he would finally accelerate in the death overs. However, before he could finish the innings strongly for MI, Mohsin Khan sent him back on the first ball of the 18th over.

It was a stunning yorker from the left-arm pacer that completely bamboozled Nehal Wadhera. The MI batsman cleared his front leg to play a big shot but failed to bring his bat down in time and the ball went on to crash into the stump. The left-hander returned to the pavilion after scoring 46 runs off 41 balls with the help of four fours and six sixes.

Talking about the MI innings, the five-time champions finished their innings on a modest 144 for 7. After Wadhera's departure, an unbeaten knock of 35 runs from David helped MI finish with a 140-plus total.

Rinku Singh, Axar Patel

The India squad for the highly-anticipated ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was announced on Tuesday (April 30). Rohit Sharma will be leading the Men in Blue in the marquee event, scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29 in the United States and the Caribbeans.

While most of the names in the squad were on the expected lines, the selectors sprung a huge surprise by not including Rinku Singh in the squad. Not many were expecting the youngster to miss out after the kind of year he has had in the T20s. The Uttar Pradesh star impressed one and all with his finishing abilities as well as his ability to build the innings when the situation is tough.

He had a stunning campaign in the IPL last year where he scored 474 runs with the help of four half-centuries. During the same season, Rinku Singh had also famously hit Yash Dayal for five straight sixes to pull off a miraculous win for his team Kolkata Knight Riders.

It paved the way for his maiden India call-up and the left-handed batsman hit the ground running in international cricket as well. In 15 T20Is so far, he has scored 356 runs at a staggering average of 89 and a strike-rate of 176.

In his last T20I knock, he smashed 69 runs off 39 balls while hitting 25 runs off the last five balls against Afghanistan in January this year. However, his efforts were not enough for a place in the T20 World Cup squad as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel decided against picking him.

Why was Rinku Singh not picked in the World Cup squad?

Rinku Singh has become the talk of the town as the Indian cricket fraternity has been busy searching for the answer to his omission. Not only the fans but several former cricketers have also expressed their surprise over the decision.

And while only the selectors and the team management know the reason behind it, the Indian Express has reported that Rinku Singh missed out because the team wanted more allrounders in the squad.

The report stated that for the final spot in the World Cup squad, there was a three-way competition between Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. In the end, the selectors and the team management decided to go with Axar because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan, on Tuesday (April 30), announced their squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Rashid Khan has been named the captain of the 15-member squad for the marquee event, scheduled to be played in June in the United States and the Caribbeans.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, who led Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup last year, has failed to make the cut for the T20 World Cup. The left-handed batsman last played a T20I for Afghanistan in 2022. Shahidi has played only six T20Is so far and was not a part of the Afghan team for the last T20 World Cup as well.

The Afghan team have also made a few additions to their squad compared to the 2022 edition as the likes of Karim Janat, Mohammad Ishaq, and Noor Ahmad have been named in the team. 20-year-old left-arm spinner Nangyal Kharoti has been named in the squad as well.

Kharoti made his T20I debut for Afghanistan last month during the T20I series against Ireland and hit the ground running. He picked up an impressive five wickets in three games while maintaining a brilliant economy rate of just 5.90.

Talking about another new face in the team. Mohammad Ishaq has made the cut as well. The 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has played four T20Is so far. He was a part of the Afghanistan squad in the 2020 and 2022 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cups.

Afghanistan squad:

The onus will be on the likes of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and Najibullah Zadran to deliver with the bat for Afghanistan. The Asian team has a formidable spin attack for the tournament. The spin department will be led by captain Rashid Khan and comprises the likes of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Nangyal Kharoti, and veteran Mohammad Nabi.

As far as the fast bowlers in the team are concerned, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fareed Ahmad, and Fazalhaq Farooq have been named in the squad.

Afghanistan Squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Ishaq, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (c), Nangyal Kharoti, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Fareed Ahmad Malik

LSG vs MI

Fans on Twitter reacted after Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) thrashed Mumbai Indians (MI) to win their sixth game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. They thumped the five-time champions by four wickets at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Mumbai Indians were off to a forgettable start with the bat. Rohit Sharma (4), Suryakumar Yadav (10), Tilak Varma (7), and Hardik Pandya perished early as the five-time champions were left tottering at 27 four at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday.

With the team under immense pressure, opener Ishan Kishan (32) and Nehal Wadhera (46) joined hands and bailed the team out of trouble. The Kishan-Wadhera duo added 53 runs for the fifth wicket and took Mumbai Indians past 100 runs, which at one moment didn’t seem possible.

Mohammad Nabi takes stunner

The Mumbai Indians (MI) veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi took an absolutely excellent catch to get rid of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul in the 48th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Tuesday, April 30, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

KL Rahul has always loved to play against the Mumbai Indians as he has smashed 3 centuries against the franchise and averages over 60. He has hit two of those centuries while wearing the LSG jersey.

In 2022, LSG thumped the Mumbai-based franchise by 18 and 36 runs on April 16 and 24. In both those matches, the LSG skipper slammed brilliant centuries and took his team to victories. First, he scored a 60-ball 103 and then he slammed a 62-ball 103, remaining unbeaten both times.

In the IPL 2024 match against Mumbai Indians, KL Rahul tried to take the game by playing cautious cricket. Rahul would have thought about scoring big and taking his team past the finish line, but he failed and was dismissed for 28 runs in 22 balls, with 3 fours and 1 six.

KL Rahul was dismissed on the second ball of the 8th over, which was bowled by MI captain Hardik Pandya. MI all-rounder bowled a hard length delivery outside off-stump and KL Rahul tried to smash it over leg side for a six. However, he didn't make a good connection with the ball and was caught by Mohammad Nabi near the boundary as the Afghanistan veteran did not lose his balance despite being on one leg when he took it.

Talking about the match, Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians faced yet another defeat in the competition and now they can't reach 16 points, which means they no longer have their IPL qualification faith in their hands.

Mumbai Indians have lost 7 out of the 10 matches, they have played in IPL 2024, with the 4-wicket loss to LSG causing a huge dent in their playoffs hopes. After the match ended, the former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Irfan Pathan took to his official X handle to launch a fresh attack on Hardik Pandya. He said that the Mumbai Indians were managed poorly on the field, which is the reason behind their failure in the Indian Premier League 2024.

"The team Mumbai Indians that qualified last year didn’t had Jasprit Bumrah but this season they had his services. Still they are in this situation. Purely because the team wasn’t managed well on the ground. Too many mistakes by their captain Hardik Pandya. It’s the truth," former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Irfan Pathan wrote on X.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Things are turning bad to worse for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Their chances to qualify for the playoffs have taken a massive hit after their loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday (30th April).

Mumbai Indians (MI) crossed swords with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 48th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The game between the two teams took place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

It was yet again another horrendous outing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. They were at the receiving end of a 4-wicket thrashing at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants in the league. They had a torrid outing with the bat and didn't allow the bowlers the cushion to defend the target.

Mumbai Indians managed just 144 runs on the board, which in itself depicts the kind of poor outing they had. Asked to bat first, they were left tottering at 27/4. Ishan Kishan (32) and Nehal Wadhera (46) played vital hands with the bat and brought their team back into the game.

In the end, it was Tim David (35), who played a brutal hand with the hand and made sure that Mumbai Indians ended with the fighting total on the board. Moshin Khan grabbed two wickets for Lucknow Super Giants whereas barring Deepak Hooda, everyone got a wicket each.

With the ball, Mumbai Indians had a dream start as Nuwan Thushara removed Arshin Kulkarni for a golden duck. However, after that skipper KL Rahul (28) and Marcus Stoinis (62) played vital hands with the bat and made sure that they kept the game in control.

Deepak Hooda (18) and Nicholas Pooran (14*) made handy contributions as Lucknow Super Giants chased the target with ease. This was their 6th win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as they claimed 12 points and inched closer to the playoffs.

Mumbai Indians Qualification Scenario for the IPL 2024 Playoffs

Mumbai Indians have been put under immense pump in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The loss against Lucknow Super Giants was their 7th loss in the tournament. They are reeling 9th on the points table with just 3 wins under their belt. Also, they have a poor NRR of -0.272.

The qualification chances for Mumbai Indians are dented. To fancy their chances for the playoffs, the Hardik Pandya-led side need to win their last 4 games of the tournament. This will take them to 14 points, which won't guarantee them a spot in the business end of the tournament, especially with other teams in contention as well.

Apart from winning all their games, they need to make sure that they win big because they have a negative NRR. Along with this, they also will need some other results to go in their favor. The Hardik Pandya-led side couldn't afford a loss as it would mean curtains for them in the IPL.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul's Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) went head-to-head with the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 48th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Tuesday, April 30, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

The home team headed into the clash against the 5-time champions with a dominant head-to-head record as in the 4 matches between the teams LSG led by 3-1 against MI.

After joining the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022, Lucknow Super Giants faced off against Mumbai Indians twice in their debut season as well as in the 2023 season. In 2022, they thumped the Mumbai-based franchise by 18 and 36 runs on April 16 and 24.

In both those matches, the LSG skipper slammed brilliant centuries and took his team to victories. First, he scored a 60-ball 103 and then he slammed a 62-ball 103, remaining unbeaten both times. When MI and LSG locked horns for the third time, KL Rahul was unavailable for the match, but Marcus Stoinis' sensational 89*-run knock helped LSG seal a 5-run win on May 16.

It was only in the 4th clash, that MI managed to win against LSG that too in a dominant manner by 81 runs in a high-voltage Eliminator of IPL 2023.

Our bowlers did well and put pressure on them - KL Rahul

Talking about their IPL 2024 clash, LSG chose to bowl first in the match and picked wickets at regular intervals to reduce MI to 27/4 with Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya back in the hut. LSG bowlers were troubled a bit by Nehal Wadhera (46) and Tim David (35), but in the end, they stopped MI to 144/7. Mohsin Khan picked up two wickets while Marcus Stoinis, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mayank Yadav, and Ravi Bishnoi got one wicket each. Chasing the target, Marcus Stoinis (62) batted brilliantly and others supported him well as LSG won by 4 wickets. Now the head-to-head record between the teams stands at 4-1.

At the post-match presentation ceremony, KL Rahul said that the LSG bowlers put MI batters under pressure early on and didn't allow them to recover. KL Rahul elaborated:

"We still had batters in the middle. An experienced batter in Pooran and KP is seasoned as well. Was a bit dry. 165-170 would have made it a competitive game. It takes time to adjust to this wicket. Our bowlers did well and put pressure on them. Always happy when you get those two points. We need to gain momentum in the back end of the tournament and the momentum helps."

KL Rahul further provided a huge update on Mayank Yadav who left the field after bowling 3.1 overs and said that the pacer was having some issues with his sides. KL Rahul said:

"I haven't spoken to Mayank much. He had some pain in his sides. He said thoda dukh raha hai. So, I asked him to go out. He is useful to us. We need to take care of him. He bowled wide yorkers and slower bumpers today which was good to see. We are giving him a free hand."

LSG head coach Justin Langer also talked about Mayank Yadav and said that the pacer will undergo scans tomorrow. Langer said:

"Looks like he's sore in the same spot, his rehab's been absolutely perfect, he bowled pain-free in the last few week or so, he's looked in great condition. We'll have a scan and we'll find out tomorrow"

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns with the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 48th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Tuesday, April 30, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.

Mumbai Indians were invited to bat first in the match and they did a poor job. The top-order batters failed miserably and MI were reduced to 27/4. Nehal Wadhera (46) and Tim David (35) showed a good fight to power their team to a good total of 144/7 on the board. Defending the total, the MI bowlers did a good job and took the game deep, but the score was too small to defend and LSG won by 4 wickets.

Speaking after the match, Hardik Pandya said that the loss of early wickets cost them the game as they couldn't recover from it. Hardik Pandya took an indirect dig at Rohit Sharma and said:

"I think losing early wickets is tough to recover from and that's what we couldn't do it (recover) today. You still have to see the ball and hit. We just missed those balls and got out, that has been the kind of season we have had so far."

Hardik Pandya further said that they will take a lot of learnings from the game and try to bounce back strong. Hardik Pandya also lauded Nehal Wadhera and backed him to play for India National Cricket Team eventually.

"I have always believed that you will be up and you'll be up, just that you got to give it your all. A lot of things to learn from this game. It has been fantastic. I think he (Wadhera) did last year as well, he couldn't get opportunities earlier (in the tournament) but he will play a lot of IPL and (represent) India eventually."

Mumbai Indians' Current Position In The IPL 2024 Standings

Before their match against the Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians had won just two out of their last five matches while facing a defeat in three of them. They were at the ninth spot on the Indian Premier League 2024 points table with three wins and six defeats in nine matches and had 6 points in their bag.

On April 11, they won by 7 wickets against Royal Challengers Bengaluru before losing to Chennai Super Kings on April 14 by 20 runs. Then, they had won by 9 runs against Punjab Kings on April 18 before facing defeats in back-to-back matches against Rajasthan Royals by 9 wickets on April 22 and against Delhi Capitals by 10 runs on April 27.

Now after the conclusion of the Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians clash, the 5-time Indian Premier League champions have remained in the same position.

Mumbai Indians will be next seen in action when they take on the Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders in the 51st match of the Indian Premier League 2024 on May 3 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Ayush Badoni run-out

The 24-year-old Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batsman Ayush Badoni was declared run out controversially by the third umpire in the 48th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) against Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday, April 30, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Ayush Badoni came to bat at the No.7 position for Lucknow Super Giants after KL Rahul & Co. found themselves in a little bit of trouble during the run-chase against Mumbai Indians.

The No.7 has been the best position for Ayush Badoni to bat on as he has been highly successful while in that spot. The Lucknow Super Giants coaching staff and players would have expected Ayush Badoni to finish off the match for the team as the target was small and too many runs weren't required when he walked in the middle.

The batter also looked confident when he came to bat as he hit a brilliant four to put the pressure on Mumbai Indians bowlers. However, Ayush Badoni's innings only lasted 6 balls as he was declared run out by the third umpire in a controversial manner.

On the first ball of the 19th over, Hardik Pandya bowled a short length delivery outside off-stump to Ayush Badoni and the LSG batter played it towards deep cover point to take off for a single. He ran back for the second but the fielder fired a quick throw to Ishan Kishan, who whipped off the bails in the second attempt.

It looked like Ayush Badoni had reached the crease before the bails were disturbed. However, the third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan after watching the replays concluded that Ayush Badoni didn't ground his bat at any point and despite being well inside the crease he was declared out as his bat was in the air. Ayush Badoni was unhappy after his dismissal for 6 and there was a little moment of chaos in the LSG dugout as well as the head coach Justin Langer and captain KL Rahul looked disappointed with the decision.

In the end, Lucknow Super Giants successfully chased the target to win the match by 4 wickets. Speaking after the match, Justin Langer, LSG's head coach, expressed his happiness over the win against Mumbai Indians and revealed that they were bitterly disappointed after the last game's defeat. Notably, Lucknow Super Giants faced a 7-wicket hammering at the hands of Rajasthan Royals as they allowed the Royals to chase down 197 comprehensively.

"That's a smile, we were bitterly disappointed with our last game. So to be able to fight back against Mumbai Indians and get the points, that's certainly a smile. What I am learning in this competition is every game is hard and every game is vital. So to get the points, we are thrilled with that," he said.

While talking about the bowling performance of Lucknow Super Giants, Justin Langer said that they did an outstanding job in the match. He elaborated:

"It was outstanding, I thought we had all bases covered. You are always looking to take wickets in the powerplay. When you do that, you are always ahead of the game. It's the first time, besides Bangalore early in the tournament, we took those early wickets and that set us up nicely."
