Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea locked horns against each other earlier today in what was both of the team's second-last Group C games. Rashid Khan's side only needed a victory and 2 points today to ensure that they are going through to the Super 8s with one more group match still to play.

Rashid Khan and Co. will be taking on the West Indies in their final Group C game before taking on the heavyweights in the Super 8 stages. As for the PNG, they have been knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 from the group stages along with first-timers Uganda and 2021 runners-up New Zealand.

How did Norman Vanua get run out by Rashid Khan?

Papua New Guinea were batting first after winning the toss at the Brian Lara cricket stadium and as expected, they got off to a very poor start. Half of the PNG batters had gone to the dressing room within the powerplay and their only aim after that was to ensure that they set up a triple-digit target for Afghanistan.

While doing so, tailender Norman Vanua lost his wicket in the worst way possible. In the first ball of the 13th over bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai, Vanua struck the ball towards mid-on where Rashid Khan was on alert mode. The leg-spinning bowling all-rounder quickly picked the ball up and threw it toward the non-striker's end where Vanua was running.

As the ball came in and struck the stumps, Norman Vanua dragged his bat into the ground but what happened afterwards was very unfortunate. While Rashid Khan's bull's eye throw was spot on, Vanua's bat got stuck right before entering the crease. It was almost as if the cricket god didn't want Vanua to cover the ground as his bat stuck just a few meters before the white line.

Many would have thought that the 3rd Umpire would spare Vanua because his bat got stuck but TV umpire Richard Illingworth felt otherwise. He flashed the signal out in the Jumbo LED screen and Norman Vanua's innings came to an end for a 7-ball 0. With that, Papua New Guinea got reduced to 7 wickets for just 50 runs.

Later on, PNG was able to score 45 runs more as they were restricted to 95 runs by the potent Afghanistan bowling line-up.

Afghanistan to face India and Australia in the Super 8s

Afghanistan chased the target of 96 within the first ball of the 16th over and went on top of the Group C standings ahead of the match against West Indies. Regardless of the result of their game against the Windies, the Afghanis are all set to lock horns with giants India and Australia in the ICC T20 World Cup Super 8s.

Despite their heavy win over the Oman side, successfully chasing down 48 runs in 3.1 overs, England’s qualification to the Super-8 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 depends on Australia's performance against Scotland.

England's net run rate (NNR) had plummeted to -1.800 after their opening game washed out against Scotland and their heavy defeat against Australia in the tournament. However, England’s dominant triumph over Oman significantly boosted their NRR to +3.081, but the spinner said that they are not looking too far ahead presently.

Rashid insisted that the England team remain grounded and focused on immediate goals rather than future possibilities. He mentioned that England’s approach is to assess the conditions and plan for each game individually, without considering the potential impact on their Super 8s qualification.

He also said that decisions on the playing XI are made based on the current situation rather than future scenarios. Adil Rashid said in the post-match press conference: “I think that's just the team for today. We never look far ahead. We can't look at Super 8s or whatever it is down the line. We try to look at what is our next game.

And then obviously the captain and coaches get together and they pick the team. So, it's for the day. And for the next game, it will be so on and whatever it is, so on.”

Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal admitted that he couldn't sleep in the night after watching Pakistan's nightmarish loss to the USA in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The Pakistani team, led by Babar Azam, were out in the middle at Texas for the first time ever to play bat and ball in the United States. Every fan of the country's cricket team and others around the world were backing the Men in Green to open their T20 WC 2024 campaign with a win. However, what happened in reality was a true nightmare.

Babar Azam first watched USA batter Nitish Kumar score a boundary off Haris Rauf and tie the scores and then watched his side falling into pieces in the Super Over. The highly experienced and skillful Mohammad Amir, who had delivered a sensational bowling performance in the regulation overs, leaked very expensive 18 runs in those ultimate and tournament-defining 6 balls.

When Pakistan's turn came to bat, they obviously failed to chase the target and lost the match. It was a result that gave the whole of the Pakistani nation a lot of pain as they were not ready to get embarrassed and humiliated by a team, which playing its first-ever T20 World Cup.

Angry reactions from former Pakistan players came in afterward, something that was bound to happen after such a result. Recently, all-rounder Aamer Jamal expressed his views after seeing the National team's tragic loss.

Aamer Jamal opens up about sleepless night after Pakistan's loss

While speaking to a local Pakistani outlet, Aamer Jamal was asked if he had witnessed the 2009 T20 World Champions' loss to the USA on June 6th. In response, the all-rounder, who last played for Pakistan back in January, claimed that he could not even sleep that night. For a fact, that might not be the case with Jamal only but the entire fan base of the nation wouldn't have slept.

Aamer Jamal then opened up about not getting picked by the Pakistani selectors for National duty after the away New Zealand series. He claimed that he was not disappointed at all when he got dropped from the team without getting any solid reason. Jamal stated that his job is to play cricket and he will keep on doing that regardless of his selection.

"No, I'm not disappointed that I'm not in the team. First time I got disappointed after making my debut, I was dropped from the team without any reason. Like I hadn't performed it was fine but still I took it rather positively after some time. My job is to play Cricket and perform in whatever platform I'm provided with."

"Selection is not in my hands, if it is written for me I will get it no matter what stage it is. So I always believe in playing good cricket, perform well. Selection is up to the selectors," Aamer Jamal concluded.
