Shimron Hetmyer

Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter Shimron Hetmyer has been fined following the match against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 qualifier 2. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) punished Shimron Hetmyer for breaching the code of conduct in the recent match.

The Rajasthan Royals suffered a heartbreaking 36-run loss against SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, May 24. The Jaipur-based team failed to chase down 176 runs in the do-or-die match. The Royals failed to advance to the summit clash in the ongoing season.

Shimron Hetmyer Fined 10 percent of his Match Fees

Shimron Hetmyer was fined 10% of his match fees for a Level 1 offense under the IPL Code of Conduct. The left-handed batter smashed the stumps in frustration after his dismissal during the run chase. The southpaw accepted the Match Referee's sanction, bringing the matter to a swift resolution.

The West Indies batter struggled to score against SunRisers Hyderabad left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma. He managed to score just four runs off 10 balls before being cleaned up by Abhishek Sharma. The 27-year-old batter attempted to hit the stumps with his bat before walking back to the pavilion.

“Shimron Hetmyer of the Rajasthan Royals has been fined 10 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on May 24,” BCCI said.

“Hetmyer committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” BCCI added.

Following the dismissal of Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel made a valiant effort. Rovman Powell scored just six runs off 12 balls before being dismissed by T Natarajan. Jurel remained unbeaten on 56 runs off 35 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. RR's IPL 2024 campaign ended, and SRH advanced to the final.

Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma were instrumental in restricting the Rajasthan Royals. Shahbaz took three wickets for 23 runs, while Abhishek secured two wickets for 24 runs. Pat Cummins and T Natarajan picked up one wicket each. Shahbaz was named 'Player of the Match' for his contributions.

Earlier, SunRisers Hyderabad set a target of 175 after being asked to bat first. Heinrich Klaasen scored a crucial half-century, while Travis Head (34) and Rahul Tripathi (37) chipped in with useful contributions. Trent Boult and Avesh Khan each took three wickets, and Sandeep Sharma took two wickets.

Brief Score: Sunrisers Hyderabad 175 for 9 (Heinrich Klaasen 50, Avesh Khan 3-27, Trent Boult 3-45)

Rajasthan Royals 139 for 7 (Dhruv Jurel 56, Shahbaz Ahmed 3-23, Abhishek Sharma 2-24)

Riyan Parag and Sunil Gavaskar

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar bashed Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag for his outrageous shot selection last night against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The Royals were taking on the Sunrisers yesterday for IPL 2024's Qualifier 2 match at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. While Rajasthan came off from a victory against an in-form RCB team in the Eliminator stage, Hyderabad arrived after a loss against KKR in the 1st Qualifier. The match was evenly set for both the teams with the winner having it all.

Eventually, it was the second-best team from the IPL 2024 points table - SRH, who came out on top and denied Rajasthan's entry to their 2nd final in 3 years. Sanju Samson's side was pretty much in the game in both halves but a poor bowling performance towards the end of 1st innings and an equally poor batting performance towards the end of 2nd innings proved to be the difference.

Some of the players' shot selection was highly questionable with Riyan Parag becoming a prime example of what lack of patience does.

How did Riyan Parag get out against Hyderabad?

Riyan Parag, who is the league's 3rd highest run-scorer after Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, had a great platform to deliver a big knock in a high-stakes game. The youngster could not have asked for more from the one above as the foundation was perfectly laid for him to come up with his best-ever batting display and see his team through to the finals.

However, it was the lack of patience and wildness to smash a huge six to release some pressure, which got Riyan Parag out. He had to ensure that he stitched a solid partnership with Dhruv Jurel and steady Rajasthan's ship. The situation was tense in the middle as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson both were out in quick succession.

Riyan Parag was just playing the 10th ball of his innings and he had scored 6 runs at that time. There was a bit of pressure on him due to the dot balls and he thought that the 12th over bowled by Shahbaz Ahmed could be a good opportunity to ease up. So he took his chance in the very first ball.

Parag had made no timing, his body wasn't aligned either when he decided to go for a baseball batter swing against a short ball. The ball went straight up and fell in the hands of Abhishek Sharma. With that, Riyan Parag departed for 6 runs and RR were restricted to 139 with Pat Cummins' Hyderabad winning by 36 runs.

What did Sunil Gavaskar say about Parag's shot selection?

Sunil Gavaskar, who was present at the commentary box when Riyan Parag got out, bashed the latter for his temperament in a high-octane game. Gavaskar slammed Parag by saying that talent alone isn't enough to become successful, one needs a solid mindset as well that they can make up for the dot balls.

"Seriously, seriously? What's the use of all the talent if you're not going to think. What kind of shot is that? Seriously. So much talent… if you don't have the temperament, it's not going to work. So what if you had a few dot balls? You can make up for that." - Sunil Gavaskar said during commentary.

Rahul Dravid and Jay Shah

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is searching for Team India's next coach. BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarified that the board hasn't approached any former Australian cricketer for the role. As per recent reports, two legendary Indian batters are the frontrunners to replace Rahul Dravid as head coach.

Rahul Dravid's tenure is set to end after the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. The Men in Blue reached the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022 and the finals of the ICC World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup 2023. However, they failed to secure the ICC trophy.

The BCCI recently invited applications for the head coach position, with the deadline being May 27. Rahul Dravid can reapply for the position, but he is not keen on continuing another tenure with the Indian team. Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup but failed to break the ICC trophy jinx.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir is considered a top contender for the head coach position. However, uncertainty surrounds whether senior players will support Gambhir's appointment. Former cricketer VVS Laxman is also under consideration for the role, according to a RevSportz report.

It Will Be Completely Up To Jay Shah - Former BCCI office-bearer

As per a PTI report, VVS Laxman has shown reluctance to take on the role of the Indian team's head coach. The former batter is hesitant to apply due to the physically and mentally demanding nature of the job for the next three and a half years.

Laxman's term as the NCA's 'Head of Cricket' is set to conclude in September this year. The BCCI is keen on convincing the 49-year-old to take up the top job. A former BCCI official stated that if Laxman is not willing to work full-time, he could serve as a consultant for the Test series in Australia and England.

"It will be completely up to Jay but he has to convince VVS to be a part of the Indian set-up, at least when they play red-ball series," a former BCCI office-bearer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"If he is not willing to work full-time, he can always be the consultant when India play marquee red-ball series in Australia this year and England next year."

Laxman's Services Should Be Utilised Properly - Former BCCI office-bearer

The report further stated that VVS Laxman will rejoin the IPL after his NCA tenure as he has a standing offer from at least one franchise.

"Unlike Rahul (Dravid), who was based out of Bengaluru, Laxman had to shift base from Hyderabad. Not to forget his magnanimity when he agreed to work for a lesser pay package compared to what he was making as a mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad and as an expert with one of the broadcasters.

"So there will be factors but Laxman's services should be utilized properly,"
the former office-bearer said.

VVS Laxman played 134 Test matches for India and scored 8781 runs at an average of 45.97, including 17 centuries and 56 half-centuries. The former middle-order batter scored 2338 runs in 86 ODIs at an average of 30.76 with six centuries and 10 half-centuries.

Gautam Gambhir

Former India batter Gautam Gambhir is inching closer to replacing Rahul Dravid as team India's next head coach after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The narrative about Gautam Gambhir taking over as India's next head coach is catching heat every day. The topic was further fueled by a comment from BCCI secretary Jay Shah. He cleared all the rumors and confirmed that they did not approach any overseas individual to take up the coaching role.

With no overseas individual being looked at, will Gautam Gambhir succeed Rahul Dravid?

Jay Shah mentioned that BCCI never had a word with an Australian like Justin Langer or Ricky Ponting about India's coaching role. Although both had revealed about being approached by the Indian board during the IPL, Shah's statement has cleared all the rumors about a foreign coach taking up.

The Honorable Secretary also added that the Indian head coaching role is an exclusive job wherein, only an Indian can find success. Because it will just not be about managing the Senior team or setting up tactics. It will be about tracing and unearthing unknown names that bring themselves in the domestic circuit year in and year out.

"Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure." -

In such a case, Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir comes forward as a reliable name. He has won the IPL multiple times as captain and is currently one win away from winning the title as part of a coaching staff. But at the same time, he also hasn't managed or coached a domestic team on a year-long basis.

Gautam Gambhir is known for taking up new challenges but will it be possible for him to be away from his family and his comfort? Will he want to get back to the Indian dressing room as the head coach and use his tactical and management acumen to start a new era of Indian cricket?

If he does, then India will get a very good candidate for the role but it also remains to be seen if he quits the Kolkata Knight Riders mentor role. Gautam Gambhir knows how to build a team, run a team, and find success with the team. It was evident throughout his Indian Premier League career since 2011 after the Delhi Daredevils released him.

What next for Team India?

As the talk of Gautam Gambhir's appointment as the head coach catches heat, the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma is gearing up for a massive challenge. After a tumultuous IPL 2024 edition, all the Indian players are setting up to take the flight to the USA and West Indies for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Every member of the 15-man T20 World Cup squad is out of the tournament with Rinku Singh the only player from the reserves list to play the Finale tomorrow.

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya

The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to be played in the Caribbean Islands and the United States of America (USA), starting on June 1. The first batch of Indian cricketers, comprising those not engaged in the IPL 2024 playoffs, will leave for the United States on May 25 to compete in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

India is placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and the USA. The Men in Blue will play all their league matches in the USA. Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, will kick off its World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland at the newly built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

The Rohit Sharma-led team will face arch-rivals Pakistan in New York on June 9. India will face the USA on June 12 and conclude their Group A fixtures against Canada on June 15. The Indian team will be hoping to break their 11-year ICC trophy drought, with their last victory in the Champions Trophy in 2013.

India has fallen short in several major tournaments despite their consistency over the past decade. They reached the final of the ODI World Cup in 2023 and the semifinals in 2015 and 2019. They reached the T20 World Cup final in 2014 and the semifinals in 2016 and 2022, but have not won any trophies.

Team India Will Leave For World Cup On May 25

Captain Rohit Sharma and several other key players, such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and coaching staff, are expected to leave for the USA today. The remaining players, including those whose IPL teams reach the playoffs, will depart in a second batch following the final of the tournament.

India squad for T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj. Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan

Rohit Sharma As A Leader Well Settled - Matthew Hayden

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden feels India has a well-balanced squad for the T20 World Cup. He highlighted the team's left and right-handed opening combination, with Virat Kohli in form at No. 3. Hayden stated that Natarajan could have been included to strengthen the squad.

"Excellent balance for Team India. Three (four) spinners in the squad, which I think is a good strategy for the West Indian conditions, not so sure about that up in the Americas. A superb and experienced batting lineup, left and right-hand combination at the top, Kohli at three," Hayden said.

"Rohit Sharma as a leader - well settled, well organized, gone through many campaigns before. Fast bowlers in Bumrah and Siraj, I think strong selections. Would have liked to probably see a Natarajan, someone at the death that could come in and deliver like he has done in the IPL. However, overall very balanced and very good squad," Hayden added.

Natarajan has performed well in IPL 2024, securing 19 wickets across 13 innings with an economy rate of 8.83. However, Arshdeep Singh has been chosen ahead of him as the left-arm seamer in the main squad, while Khaleel Ahmed was included among the traveling reserves.

Shahid Afridi

Pakistan's legendary former All-rounder Shahid Afridi thinks that Babar Azam can lead the National side towards the last four stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

In just a week, the T20 carnival will shift from the IPL to the competition between top International teams at the 20-20 World Cup. All the teams are almost set to fly over to the USA and West Indies for the competition. The Pakistani team in the meantime is playing a 4-match T20I series in England after beating Ireland in a 3-match series by 2-1.

The Pakistani team have made full use of the time they had from April to May when most of the top cricketing names were busy playing the IPL. Babar Azam and Co. first played a home 2-2 draw against a second-string New Zealand team. Then they started their European trip with a loss to Ireland in the 1st T20I before bouncing back and winning back-to-back matches.

Amid the crisis in the team, Shahid Afridi puts more pressure on the Pakistani team

Pakistan's trip to England started with the 1st T20I getting washed out without a ball bowled. And today the 2nd match of the series will be taking place in Edgbaston. This will be a very good series for both teams in their preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup. It is going to be specifically important for the traveling team as they might announce their WC 15-man squad.

Amid the team's preparation in England, a report emerged from Pakistan that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has paused the selection committee's process. Naqvi is reportedly very annoyed by the decision-making and attitude of the 7-man panel, which is led by former left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz.

It will be interesting to see when the PCB announces the squad but in the build-up to the tournament, WC 2024 ambassador Shahid Afridi revealed his thoughts on the last 4.

Shahid Afridi was unveiled as the latest ambassador who will join other names like Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and Usain Bolt. In the interview conducted by the ICC, Afridi was asked to choose his semi-finalists for the latest edition. He believes Pakistan is going to join ODI World Champions Australia, arch-rivals India, and the spirited New Zealand.

"Pakistan ko mai samajhta hoon ki final khelna chahiye (I think Pakistan should play the Final). So I will go with Australia, India, and, unn conditions ke andar, I will go with New Zealand." - Shahid Afridi told the ICC.

Pakistan's schedule for ICC T20 World Cup 2024

After playing the series in England, Pakistan will fly out to the USA for the Group stages of the T20 World Cup 2024 which will begin against the USA on June 6. Following their opening tie in Dallas, Men in Green will head to New York for the Indo-Pak clash on June 9 before facing Canada and Ireland on 11 and 16 June.

All the Super 8 and knockout games are going to take place in Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.

Tom Moody and Sanju Samson

Rajasthan Royals' (RR) journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) ended with a heartbreaking loss against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in "Qualifier 2". Former SunRisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody highlighted flaws in Sanju Samson's captaincy that led to the Rajasthan Royals's loss in the recent game.

The Jaipur-based team suffered a crushing 36-run defeat in a do-or-die match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, May 24. The Rajasthan batters failed to deliver in the 176-run chase in the knockout game. They managed to score 139 for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

SunRisers Hyderabad scored runs at a quick pace despite losing wickets in the powerplay. They scored 68 runs for the loss of three wickets in six overs. However, they failed to maintain momentum and lost wickets at regular intervals. Heinrich Klaasen scored a fifty and guided SRH to 175/9 in 20 overs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a solid start during the run chase. He scored 42 off 21 balls before being removed by Shahbaz Ahmed. Following Jaiswal's dismissal, RR lost wickets at regular intervals and collapsed to 79-5. Dhruv Jurel scored an unbeaten 56 off 35 balls but didn't get support from the other end.

We Should'nt Be Surprised - Tom Moody

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Tom Moody questioned Sanju Samson's decision to demote Shimron Hetmyer in the batting order despite two left-arm spinners bowling. Moody emphasized that RR could've counteracted SRH's spin threat by sending Hetmyer earlier, adding that this error contributed to the loss.

"We shouldn't be surprised because that is the trend. We shouldn't be surprised and every single time we sit here and say that we are surprised. To me, it was an absolute no-brainer. Hetmyer had to go in ahead of Dhruv Jurel, regardless of whether he played very nicely. He would have still played nice when he got his opportunity," Moody said.

"But they needed to negate the two left-arm spinners, right at the outset. That was the hole, the Sunrisers had in their attack and they needed to negate that. They should have sent Hetmyer in and said just play your game. Take it down in your zone, let's get ahead in this game, do not allow these left-arm spinners to take control of the game."

"Yes, people will see we end up getting out to left-arm spin, but the game was nearly gone by then and that was a particularly good ball, a carrom ball as we mentioned. If we got ahead in the game, that would not have ever happened. It is a tactical blunder,"
he further added.

Shimron Hetmyer had a disappointing IPL campaign this year. The left-handed batter managed 113 runs from 12 matches at an average of 22.60. Hetmyer played a crucial match-winning innings against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), scoring an unbeaten 27 runs off 10 balls to help his team chase down the target.
