Pakistan squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 announced, Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim included

Pakistan, on Friday (May 22), announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29 in the USA and the West Indies.

Pakistan are the last team to announce their squad for the marquee event. As expected, Babar Azam will be leading the Men in Green in the T20 World Cup. The right-handed batsman will be leading the side in a T20 World Cup for the third time. He was the captain in the 2021 and 2022 editions as well.

Pakistan squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

The highlight of the Pakistan squad is the inclusion of fast bowler Haris Rauf. There were doubts over his inclusion in the team owing to lack of match practice as he has not played a single competitive game since February owing to a shoulder injury.

However, the Pakistan selectors and the team management have shown faith in the pacer. Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, who recently came out of retirement, have also been named in the squad. Imad last played in the T20 World Cup in 2016 while Amir's last appearance came in the 2021 edition.

There are also a number of players in the squad who will be playing in the T20 World Cup for the first time. The players are - Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub and Usman Khan. Eight of the 15 players in the squad played in the last edition of the T20 World Cup as well.

"This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event," as quoted by PCB.

"Haris Rauf is fully fit and bowling well in the nets. It would have been nice if he had gotten an outing at Headingley, but we remain confident that he will continue to maintain an upward trajectory in the upcoming matches, as he will have an important role to play along with other strike bowlers in the T20 World Cup."

Pakistan are in Group A alongside arch-rivals India, co-hosts USA, Ireland, and Canada. Babar Azam & Co. will open their campaign in the T20 World Cup against the USA on June 6 in Dallas. It will be followed by the huge clash against India on June 9 in New York before they take on Canada on June 11. Pakistan's final group game is against Ireland on June 16.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8s. Pakistan will be fancying their chances of progressing ahead and will be looking to go all the way this time after doing well in the last two editions. In 2021, they bowed out at the semifinal stage before losing the final against England in 2022.

Pakistan squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

Babar Azam (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan

Pakistan's fixtures for ICC T20 World Cup 2024:

  • June 6, Thursday: Pakistan vs USA, 9:30 PM IST, Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas
  • June 9, Sunday: India vs Pakistan, 8:30 PM IST, Citi Field, New York
  • June 11, Tuesday: Pakistan vs Canada, 8:30 PM IST, Citi Field, New York
  • June 16, Sunday: Pakistan vs Ireland, 8:30 PM IST, Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill

Avesh Khan and Abdul Samad

Rajasthan Royals (RR) pacer Avesh Khan has been breathing fire in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The Qualifier 2 of the tournament between the teams is underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Avesh Khan is turning the things for his team against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The fast bowler changed the course of the game within one over and put his team at the top in the high-pressure game, which is underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

In the 14th over of the game, Avesh Khan produced two wickets for his team and made sure that he put the Sunrisers Hyderabad under pressure. First, he removed Nitish Reddy and went on to remove Abdul Samad with the magical ball, to which the batter looked clueless and walked back disappointed.

Avesh Khan bowled a good-length delivery that was tailing in a touch. Abdul Samad's feet were stuck to the crease as he tried to be tentative. This left a gap between the pad and the ball and the ball went on to snap past the inside edge and hit the top of the off-stump to send the batter packing. This left Sunrisers Hyderabad CEO Kavya Maran stunned.

Here's the video:

— Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka (@Hanji_CricDekho) May 24, 2024

Abdul Samad couldn't make an impact with the bat as he bagged a golden duck in the ongoing crucial game. Earlier on the 5th ball, he removed Nitish Reddy, who scored just 5 runs off the 10 balls. With his two wickets in the one over, Sunrisers Hyderabad was left tottering at 120/6.

Avesh Khan made a similar kind of impact for his team in the last game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad. He removed Rajat Patidar and Dinesh Karthik in the same over to put his team at the top and then win the game.

In the ongoing game, Heinrich Klaasen is keeping his team in the hunt. The keeper-batter slammed a fighting half-century and kept his team in the hunt. He scored 50 runs off 34 and powered Sunrisers Hyderabad to over 160 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai

I don't think the way we have played so far is going to change tonight at all - Heinrich Klaasen

Ahead of the game against Rajasthan Royals, Heinrich Klaasen opened up about and lauded the crowd support at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He talked about his form and claimed that he was a bit disappointed with himself before adding that they would be playing in the same aggressive manner. He added:

"It's a very humbling feeling, the crowd has been fantastic this season. Hopefully, it keeps on growing. If we win here tonight, they'll grow up more. (Personal form) Little bit disappointed with how the middle phase of the tournament went. But for the last two games, I am quite pleased, small errors here and there, that are quite easy to fix. Hopefully tonight I can rectify those small errors and make a big impact on the game.

"I don't think the way we have played so far is going to change tonight at all. It's a semi-final, a lot of big individuals need to step up and keep playing our type of brand. If we play our brand of cricket, we will put teams under pressure. It's a different wicket, boundary size does play a role here," he concluded.

SRH vs RR: Watch - Sandeep Sharma castles Heinrich Klaasen with a perfect yorker

Sandeep Sharma, on Friday (May 22), once again showed why he is regarded so highly as he castled Heinrich Klaasen with a beauty in the ongoing second qualifier between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

It was the 19th over of the SRH innings and Klaasen was well set. The South Africa star had finished his fifty off 33 deliveries in the 18th over and was looking to shift gears. Sanju Samson handed the ball to Sandeep Sharma to bowl the 19th over and the pacer had his task cut out against the hard-hitting batter.

However, the right-arm pacer came out on top in style by castling Klaasen on the very first ball of the over. Sandeep Sharma came up with a stunning yorker to send back Klaasen and stop him from finishing the innings strongly for his side. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 50 runs off 34 balls with the help of four sixes.

Watch as Sandeep Sharma castles Heinrich Klaasen:

Talking about the game, SRH were on 169 for 7 in the 20th over at the time of writing this report. While SRH made a fast start with the bat, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and it stopped them from posting a huge total.

The likes of Travis Head (34) and Rahul Tripathi (37) got the starts as well but failed to convert them into big scores. SRH will be hoping that they finish with a 180-plus total. The winner of the ongoing game will qualify for the final and will play against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday (May 26) at the same venue.

This is SRH's second shot at the final. Earlier this week, they suffered a crushing 8-wicket loss against Kolkata Knight Riders in the first qualifier. On the other hand, RR beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Eliminator.

SRH vs RR: Watch - Sandeep Sharma's bizarrely hilarious fielding blunder upsets Avesh Khan

Sandeep Sharma made a bizarre blunder on the field during the ongoing second qualifier between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The incident took place in the seventh over when Avesh Khan was bowling to Travis Head. On the fifth ball of the over, Avesh bowled a length bowl outside the off stump and Head slashed the ball towards the left of Sandeep Sharma who was standing at third man.

Sandeep Sharma started running towards his right and it looked like a regulation save for him. He got down time in time but bizarrely failed to get hold of the ball. The ball hit the back side of his thigh before running away for a four. What looked like a single turned into a four for Head and SRH. Looking at this, Avesh Khan was left upset.

Watch the blunder from Sandeep Sharma:

pic.twitter.com/wGMvu92ZcF

— Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka (@Hanji_CricDekho) May 24, 2024

Talking about the game, SRH finished their innings on a competitive 175 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. Heinrich Klaasen top-scored for SRH, scoring 50 runs off 34 balls while the likes of Head (34) and Rahul Tripathi (37) played crucial knocks as well. For RR, Trent Boult starred with the ball, taking three wickets in the powerplay while Avesh Khan also claimed three. Sandeep Sharma, on the other hand, picked up two wickets.

"Understood what we're coming up against. A batting line-up that likes to hit boundaries. There was a mixture of boundaries and a mixture of wickets, which is a little bit unusual. We took wickets throughout the whole game and that restricted them to a score that we are pretty confident about," said Boult after the innings.

"You always try to be aggressive, the hardest thing is to adapt to the wicket. The last two wickets we played on have probably been the best two of the whole tournament which is great for this time of the tournament. We hung in there nicely as a group and the way we finished at the death along with the spinners in the middle, we have restricted them to a nice total," he added.

The winner of the ongoing game will be taking on Kolkata Knight Riders in the final, scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Watch: Aiden Markram's brilliant catch to dismiss Sanju Samson

Aiden Markram took a fine catch to send back in-form Sanju Samson in the ongoing second qualifier of the IPL 2024 between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Set a target of 176 runs, RR were off to a fine start with Yashasvi Jaiswal coming out all guns blazing. While his opening partner Tom Kohler-Cadmore could not score big and departed for just 10, Jaiswal made sure to give his team a solid start. He smashed 42 runs off 21 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes before being dismissed by Shahbaz Ahmed in the seventh over.

The onus was on Sanju Samson to steady the ship after Jaiswal's departure. However, the RR captain lost his wicket just two runs after Jaiswal was dismissed. SRH captain Pat Cummins decided to give the ball to part-time spinner Abhishek Sharma to bowl the ninth over and the move paid off instantly.

On the third ball of his first over, Sharma sent back Samson to give SRH a huge breakthrough as RR found themselves reeling at 67 for 3. Sharma bowled a length delivery on the stumps and Samson rocked back to play a pull shot.

He hit the ball towards the right of Aiden Markram at long-on. At first, it looked like the RR captain had placed his shot perfectly and would get four runs. However, Markram ran towards his right and completed a fine catch while making a small leap. Samson departed after scoring 10 runs off 11 balls.

Talking about the game, RR were on 79 for 5 in the 12th over at the time of writing this report. 12 runs after Samson's dismissal, Shahbaz Ahmed sent back Riyan Parag and Ravichandran Ashwin as well to put SRH in the driver's seat.

Earlier in the game, a fine fifty from Heinrich Klaasen helped SRH post a competitive total of 175 for 9 in 20 overs. The winner of this game will be taking on Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Rajasthan Royals (RR) leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal achieved an unwanted record to his name for his feat in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He became the bowler with the most sixes conceded in the history of the league as he has given away 223 sixes in his career in tournaments.

Yuzvendra Chahal achieved the feat after his another below-par performance in the ongoing game against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The Qualifier 2 of the tournament between the teams is underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Yuzvendra Chahal failed to take a wicket in the ongoing game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The leg-spinner returned with the figures of 0/34 in his 4 overs. He was hit for 3 sixes in his innings and him not taking a wicket in the middle was the big problem for his team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Yuzvendra Chahal in the ongoing IPL 2024 has been great. He started off pretty well but in the second half, he has been far away from his best. Overall, he has conceded 223 sixes and surpassed Piyush Chawla, who has been taken for 222 sixes in the league.

Here's the list of the most sixes given away by bowlers in the IPL:

224 - Yuzvendra Chahal*

222 - Piyush Chawla

206 - Ravindra Jadeja

202 - Ravichandran Ashwin

In the ongoing IPL 2024, Yuzvendra Chahal has given away 30 sixes, which is the most by him in his career. He is second on the list of most sixes conceded by bowlers in the single edition of the league. Mohammed Siraj sits at the top with 31 sixes to his name in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Here's the loss of most sixes conceded by bowlers in a single edition:

31 - Mohammed Siraj in 2022

30 - Yuzvendra Chahal in 2024*

30 - Wanindu Hasaranga in 2022

29 - Dwayne Bravo in 2018

28 - Yuzvendra Chahal in 2015

We hung in there nicely as a group - Trent Boult after Rajasthan Royals restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to 175

Trent Boult, who picked three wickets in the ongoing IPL 2024 game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, talked about his performance, saying that his team was aware of the players they were against and also applauded Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan for their performance. Speaking to broadcasters, he explained:

"Understood what we're coming up against. A batting line-up that likes to hit boundaries. There was a mixture of boundaries and a mixture of wickets, which is a little bit unusual. We took wickets throughout the whole game and that restricted them to a score that we are pretty confident about. You always try to be aggressive, the hardest thing is to adapt to the wicket. "We hung in there nicely as a group and the way we finished at the death along with the spinners in the middle, we have restricted them to a nice total. Those guys (Avesh and Sandeep) have been doing an amazing job, adapting to whatever surface we have come up against. Avesh has been bowling beautifully for us the whole tournament. Sandy (Sandeep) is a very experienced bowler and he showed his skill tonight. Only half the job done, we are looking forward to the chase,"
he concluded.

Babar Azam, Iftikhar Ahmed

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has been facing the heat from the fans for an animated chat with his teammate Iftikhar Ahmed.

The video is doing the rounds on social media in which Babar Azam could be seen frustrated at something. He said something to Iftikhar before the latter walked up to the Pakistan captain and tried to pacify him. Iftikhar seemingly tried to explain something but it did not make much of a difference.

Babar Azam looked frustrated even after Iftikhar's explanation and continued telling him something before both the teammates walked away. The incident seemingly took place before the first T20I between England and Pakistan on Wednesday (May 22). The match was eventually washed out without a ball being bowled.

Watch the incident between Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed:

Abhishek Sharma, Shimron Hetmyer

While Abhishek Sharma could not deliver with the bat in the second qualifier against Rajasthan Royals, he made a huge impact with the ball in the second qualifier at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

With the pitch in Chennai assisting the spinners, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins decided to use Abhishek Sharma and the latter completely justified the captain's decision. He bowled his full quota of four overs only for the third time in his IPL career and picked up two huge wickets.

He first dismissed Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson to put SRH in the driver's seat before sending back the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer in the 14th over. Sharma's delivery to dismiss Hetmyer was an absolute beauty. Hetmyer was struggling to time the ball and was batting on 4 runs off 9 balls before being undone by Sharma.

The left-arm spinner bowled one on the off-stump and Hetmyer rocked back to play a punch shot. However, he misread the line of the delivery and failed to make any contact. The ball went on to hit the top of the off-stump.

Sharma finished his spell with 2 wickets for 24 runs. At the time of writing this report, SRH were reeling at 138 for 7 in the 20th over, needing 38 runs from 4 balls.
