The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently facing the challenging task of finding an apt candidate for the role of head coach for the Indian cricket team, with VVS Laxman's future within the set-up in the spotlight.

Laxman is not reportedly keen to take on the high-profile role, despite there being rumors that the legendary batter is a frontrunner to replace his former teammate Rahul Dravid after his stint ends with the conclusion of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and Caribbean.

Amid his reluctance to replace Dravid as India’s head coach, Laxman’s tenure as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is all set to end in September, which sparked curiosity among the fans about his and BCCI’s next move over his involvement in the system.

Jay Shah confirms BCCI wants local coach for Team India

While Gautam Gambhir's name has surfaced as a potential candidate to become India’s next head coach, it is still not clear whether the BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, has consulted senior players to see if they are ready to work with the KKR mentor.

Shah recently stressed that the BCCI is looking for an Indian coach who has a large understanding of the domestic cricket landscape. His latest statement hinted that the Indian board wants someone like Laxman.

While the NCA head appears to be a natural choice for the role of Team India’s head coach, given his interim coaching experience at international arenas and at the NCA, he is yet to apply for the position, which demands significant time apart from physical and mental strength.

Despite this, the BCCI is keen on retaining Laxman within the Indian cricket system, and the board may try to convince the former Indian batter to accept the high-profile job. Meanwhile, a former BCCI official revealed that Laxman could potentially serve as a consultant for the marquee Test series if he is not ready to take up the role on a full-time basis.

An anonymous former BCCI office-bearer was quoted as saying by PTI: “It will be completely up to Jay but he has to convince VVS to be a part of the Indian set-up, at least when they play red-ball series. If he is not willing to work full-time, he can always be the consultant when India play marquee red-ball series in Australia this year and England next year.”

Also, the reports suggest that VVS Laxman already has at least one offer on the table from an IPL franchise.

The official added, “Unlike Rahul Dravid, who was based out of Bengaluru, Laxman had to shift base from Hyderabad. Not to forget his magnanimity when he agreed to work for a lesser pay package compared to what he was making as mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad and as an expert with one of the broadcasters. So, there will be factors but Laxman's services should be utilised properly.”

However, Laxman's exit from the NCA will leave a void that the BCCI must fill, with current Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour emerging as a potential successor. Rathour's extensive experience and deep understanding of cricketing techniques make him a strong candidate to replace Laxman as the NCA head in the future.

Rathour already worked at the NCA as a batting coach, and he was a national selector for four years. Apart from this experience, he has been serving as India’s batting coach for the past five years.

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has shared an anecdote when Brendon McCullum himself admitted that he could not hit him.

The right-arm pacer was still trying to find his feet at the highest stage of the game when he was given the dreaded task of defending a modest 11 runs in the super over against none other than McCullum and Aaron Finch, two of the best T20 batters of this generation.

The game Jasprit Bumrah was talking about took place in IPL 2017 when Mumbai Indians faced the now-defunct Gujarat Lions. The teams could not be separated after 40 overs of action as both of them finished their innings on 153. The game was then decided by the super over.

Mumbai Indians could only score 11 runs in 6 balls, thus setting Gujarat Lions a modest target of 12 runs. With Finch and McCullum coming out to bat, it looked like a cakewalk for the Gujarat-based outfit. Gujarat Lions' chances only looked better after Bumrah started with a no-ball and a wide on either side of the first legit delivery.

Gujarat Lions needed only 9 runs from the five balls but Jasprit Bumrah went on to deliver a memorable performance to power Mumbai Indians to a brilliant win. He conceded only two singles on the next five balls as Finch and McCullum just could not deal with the fast bowler.

When Brendon McCullum was outplayed by Jasprit Bumrah:

Jasprit Bumrah recently recalled the game when he completely outplayed McCullum as well as Finch. The India fast-bowler said that during the over, McCullum told him he could not hit him. Bumrah said that he was confident of doing the job for his side right from the start and he did not panic even after making a poor start.

"So at this venue, I had played quite a lot. This is 2017 so I was having a good year and game as well. The ball was reverse-swinging a bit so we felt that if I could execute my yorkers… I had recently developed the slowing-dipping yorker so not many had seen me use it. We thought that if we could do that, it could go well," Bumrah told his wife and sports broadcaster Sanjana Ganesan in a video posted by Jio Cinema

"But initially, the start wasn't well. As you can see, I bowled a no-ball and a wide, but I realised that somehow I was not panicking. I never felt that they were going to hit me. I just fell that if I execute it right, there is no chance they'll hit me.

"Midway through this over, McCullum told me I can't hit you, you are bowling really well. It was an up-and-down game and we were able to pull off a win. So yeah, it was very special," he added.

Bumrah impressed in the ongoing IPL as well. While Mumbai Indians crashed out at the league stage, Bumrah picked up 20 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of less than 7. He will be seen in action next month when India participate in the T20 World Cup.

RCB pacer Mohammed Siraj picked up 15 wickets for his franchise this season. However, he could not quite bowl his team to win their maiden IPL title.

RCB who promised much more with their performance in the second half lost the Eliminator against Rajasthan Royals to bow out of the tournament with disappointment once again. They won just one out of their first 8 games and then won six on the trot to make it to the final. That included a historic win over CSK with RCB defying the odds to make it to the playoffs.

However, they came second in the knockout game as they were defeated by RR. Batting first, Royal Challengers Bangalore posted 172/8 which looked like a good score in the Eliminator. However, the Royals batters kept their calm and went on to win the game by six wickets to spare with an over left.

RR will now take on SRH in the second qualifier and fight for a place in the finals on Sunday. The winner of this match will face KKR in the final.

Dinesh Karthik has brought down the curtains on his illustrious career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Royal Challengers Bengaluru's campaign ended in the ongoing season.

Travis Head has been in stunning form in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His form is one of the reasons why Sunrisers Hyderabad have performed so well this season.

Having finished at the bottom of the points table last year, the Hyderabad-based outfit qualified for the playoffs this season and can go all the way if they manage to win two more games. Travis Head has led the charge with the bat for SRH in his comeback season in the IPL.

He had not played in the tournament since 2017 and has announced his return in style. No batter has scored more runs than him for SRH this season. Overall, Travis Head is the fourth leading run-scorer in IPL 2024 behind Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Before the ongoing second qualifier against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he had scored an impressive 533 runs in 13 games with the help of one century and four fifties.

Travis Head creates history:

Travis Head, on Friday (May 24), created history by breaking the legendary Adam Gilchrist's long-standing record of hitting the maximum number of boundaries in the powerplay in a season. Gilchrist had hit a staggering 72 boundaries in the powerplay in 2009 when he led the now-defunct Deccan Chargers to their maiden IPL title.

After that, only two players managed to touch the 70-boundary mark but none of them could go past Gilchrist's record before Head created history. In 2016, David Warner became only the second player to reach the 70-boundary mark in the powerplay. The Australia star had also hit 72 boundaries that season while leading Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Later, Yashasvi Jaiswal hit 70 boundaries in IPL 2023. And in the ongoing season, Head went to the top of the list by hitting his 73rd boundary. He achieved the feat during the second qualifier against Rajasthan Royals. The southpaw also became only the second player after David Warner to score 400 runs in the powerplay in a season.
