Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar

Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli's athleticism once again left everyone in awe for him, despite the Royal Challengers Bangaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2024 campaign ending abruptly with a four-wicket loss to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the eliminator at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 22.

After Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) set a target of 172, Rajasthan Royals (RR) looked comfortable with Riyan Parag (36) and Dhruv Jurel (8) steering their team past the 100-run mark at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Royals’ chase was under control until Kohli's magic in the field turned the tide for RCB; however, it didn’t make much difference for RR.

Virat Kohli's fielding heroics shine amid RCB's IPL 2024 exit

The incredible moment came at the start of the 14th over of RR’s successful chase of 173 runs in Ahmedabad. Kohli's extraordinary fielding led to Jurel's run-out, breaking his 26-run stand with Parag. As Jurel attempted a second run, Kohli, positioned at deep square leg, sprinted to his left to collect Parag's pull shot off Cameron Green’s delivery.

Displaying his trademark athleticism, the RCB star batter delivered a powerful throw to the non-striker's end. Green, waiting at the stumps, swiftly removed the bails as Jurel felt short of his ground by mere millimeters, and Kohli’s mind-blowing efforts won legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s heart.

Jurel's casual approach to completing the second run proved costly for him. Despite Kohli's stunning efforts, RCB could not capitalize on this breakthrough, as RR chased down the target in the 19th over to eliminate the Bengaluru team from the IPL 2024.

Sunil Gavaskar praises Virat Kohli's magnificent fielding effort

Meanwhile, Gavaskar, a former Indian batting legend and celebrated commentator, was left awestruck by Kohli’s remarkable fielding to run out Jurel in the match. He described Kohli’s efforts as “magnificent” and called out Jurel for taking one of the finest fielders of the game lightly.

Praising Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar said on-air: “Yes, the throw is even more important. Flat! Once you hesitate, you do not proceed. Was there a second run? You also see who the fielder is. Any other fielder, go for the second. This is a big deal, big deal. I think he is gone. Magnificent effort. He has got RCB back in the game.”

Notably, Kohli is the leading run scorer in the IPL 2024, with 741 runs to his name in 15 matches at an impressive average of 61 and a strike rate of 154.69. He consistently led RCB from the front, but yet again, ended the campaign on a disappointed note.

With RCB's exit, Kohli now shifts his focus to national duty, as the Indian cricket team is gearing up for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, starting on June 1 in the USA and Caribbean.

Like fans and Team India, Kohli would love to continue his red-hot form in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, where the Men in Blue will kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York.

Irfan Pathan, Glenn Maxwell andKevin Pietersen

Irfan Pathan and Kevin Pietersen came down hard on Glenn Maxwell for yet another horrible batting show when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) needed the Australian all-rounder to step up with the bat in the IPL 2024 Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Maxwell was the biggest flop for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2024, but the franchise showed faith in him for the all-important eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), and they paid the price for it at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, May 22.

Glenn Maxwell falls for golden duck in RCB vs RR Eliminator

In a very crucial moment of the thrilling IPL 2024 Eliminator, RR spinner Ravichandran Ashwin removed Maxwell for a golden duck at the world's largest cricket stadium. The Australian all-rounder, who is known for his explosive batting, fell prey to Ashwin's spin trap after his in-form teammate Cameron Green was removed by the RR spinner for 27 off 21 balls.

With this unfortunate dismissal, Maxwell achieved an embarrassing record of registering 18 ducks in the IPL, equaling the record for most ducks in the cash-rich league held by Dinesh Karthik. This list is closely followed by Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who has 17 ducks to his name in his IPL career.

Well, after Maxwell’s wicket, only Mahipal Lomror could face the RR’s bowling attack and managed 32 runs off 17 balls laced with two fours and two sixes to help RCB post 172/8 on the board in their 20 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Irfan Pathan and Kevin Pietersen slam Glenn Maxwell for poor show in IPL 2024 Elimination

Earlier, Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar could only cross the 30+ mark, with Avesh Khan (3/44) emerging as the RR hero with the ball in Ahmedabad. During the RCB’s innings, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was commenting on the match, lashed out at Maxwell for another poor display for the RCB when they were in danger against RR.

Taking to microblogging site X, Pathan said, “What was Maxwell doing?”

What was maxwell doing?

— Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) May 22, 2024

On the other hand, former England captain and commentator Kevin Pietersen did not shy away from expressing his frustration at Maxwell for his flop show in the big game for RCB. The commentator said that the fans and team were expecting something special from the Australian, but he let everyone down.

Kevin Pietersen said on-air: “What on earth was that from Glenn Maxwell? This is a huge game, you need your biggest players to perform, you need to give yourself a chance. That from Glenn Maxwell isn’t good enough.”

Notably, Maxwell was the biggest flop player from the RCB camp, and his misery is a real concern for Australia after he failed to make any contribution to the IPL franchise this season. The star all-rounder scored only 52 runs and took six wickets for RCB in the IPL 2024. It was probably the worst IPL season of his career.

Even though Maxwell had taken a break from this season for a few matches, things remained the same, which is not a good sign for Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2024 in the USA and West Indies.

Aakash Chopra and Glenn Maxwell

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra criticized Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for his lackluster performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Aakash Chopra raised doubts about Glenn Maxwell's commitment to the team during the IPL 2024 Eliminator match.

The Faf du Plessis-led team faced a four-wicket loss at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, May 22. The Bengaluru team was eliminated from the tournament following the loss to the Rajasthan Royals. The RCB team's loss ended their impressive season comeback and their quest for a title.

Glenn Maxwell was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the RCB's innings. The Royal Challengers posted a total of 172 runs after being asked to bat first. The Royals chased down the target with an over to spare. Ravichandran Ashwin (2/19) was named 'Player of the Match' for his impressive bowling performance.

You Feel Whether Glenn Maxwell Cares Or Not - Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra questioned Glenn Maxwell's casual approach during RCB's batting. The former Indian opener noted that Maxwell not only batted irresponsibly but also dropped a straightforward catch.

"Glenn Maxwell - what do you do Sir? Honestly speaking, I think he doesn't even have 70-80 runs in nine matches. 28 is probably his highest score and he has a strike rate of 120. Firstly, the shot he played - how, why, a player had just gotten out and you also slogged and got out. Is there no accountability?" Chopra said.

"The team might also be thinking that he is such a big player and they give him 10 crore rupees, so they expect you to show a little cricketing smarts and play for them just like he plays for Australia. Sometimes you feel whether he cares or not. Does he actually feel for the side that strongly? I am sure he does but the way he plays poses a question for sure. He also dropped a straightforward catch," he added.

Maxwell was dismissed without scoring in the recent match. The right-handed batter came to bat in the 13th over but was caught at long-on by Dhruv Jurel while attempting a lofted shot off Ravichandran Ashwin. Notably, young all-rounder Cameron Green was also dismissed off the previous ball.

The Australian cricketer scored only 52 runs in nine innings with a dismal average of 5.7 and a strike rate of 120.93. He was dismissed for a duck four times out of nine innings in the IPL 2024. However, he contributed with the ball, taking six wickets at an average of 21.50 and an economy rate of 8.06.

Don't Know Why They Sent Him - Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator questioned RCB's decision to send Cameron Green to bat after Faf du Plessis was dismissed, noting that Rajat Patidar usually bats at No. 3 for RCB.

"Rajasthan won the toss and said they would bowl first, and the way Trent Boult bowled at the start. He conceded only six runs in three overs and got Faf du Plessis out. RCB said they would make a change this time, that every time they send Rajat Patidar at No. 3 but would send Cameron Green this time. Don't know why they sent him," Chopra further added.

England and Eoin Morgan

The only 50-over World Cup-winning English captain Eoin Morgan wants "absolute clarity" from Jos Buttler and co. in their bid to defend the T20 WC title.

England will be heading over to the USA and West Indies as the reigning T20 champions, 2 years after winning their 2nd T20 WC silverware in Australia. And ahead of their 2nd white-ball defense in less than a year's time, the Three Lions will be playing a preparatory T20I series against Pakistan.

Although the 1st T20I in Headingley was washed off yesterday, England and Pakistan will fight it out in the following 3 matches. Edgbaston, the Sophia Gardens, and the Oval will be hosting the remaining matches on the 25th, 28th, and 30th of May. Jos Buttler's side will then fly over to the West Indies for their group stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Eoin Morgan says England have learned from the CWC 2023 embarrassment

While speaking to Sky Sports yesterday after the 1st T20I got washed out in Headingley, Eoin Morgan reflected on England's chances at the T20 WC. Morgan was asked about his expectations and what he wants to see from Jos Buttler's side when they square off against other teams in the group stages first before the knockouts take place.

"I think they've learnt from that terrible experience in India"

How will England do at the T20 World Cup? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 pic.twitter.com/wnjClb3LfU

— Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) May 22, 2024

Eoin Morgan started off by highlighting the kind of World Cup defense they had during the 2023 50-over WC in India. The team, led by Jos Buttler, had won just 3 games in the entire league stages which was thoroughly dominated by the hosts. At one point in the tournament, it started to seem as if England wouldn't even finish in the Champions Trophy qualification spots.

However, Buttler's men had just managed to squeeze through in those 3 matches and finished at the 7th spot in the league table. the main reason behind their terrible performance, according to Eoin Morgan, was the lack of clarity in their team combination. The poor performance at the ODI WC last year is something Morgan believes has helped the team prepare this time around.

The after-effect of their failed title defense was seen during England's tour of the West Indies in December 2023 for a 5-match series. Eoin Morgan noted that the English contingent had looked much more secure in their batting line-up.

"Yeah, a couple of changes really and I think they have learned as a team from that terrible experience in India and taken it into their preparation. And what makes me think that they have learned is they played in the series against the West Indies - 5 match series in December where they said they were gonna make some change, particularly to their batting order."

"Phil Salt coming back in the top of the order, Will Jacks coming in at 3 and they've kept with that same line-up when it comes to the World Cup selection." - Morgan said via Sky Sports.

Morgan suggests Jos Buttler to have absolute clarity

Eoin Morgan then suggested Jos Buttler and the England team go to the T20 World Cup with absolute clarity, something that was lacking in CWC 2023. The 2019 CWC winning captain had observed that Jos Buttler's side visited India without proper clarity in their team as some players had received central contracts while some didn't.

Therefore, Morgan wants absolute clarity and confidence built around the team before they take the flight to Barbados where they play their first group game.

"So I wanna see absolute clarity throughout the whole course of this preparation at the World Cup because if you remember you rewind the clock before the ODI World Cup. There wasn't that clarity. When we got to India the side, some guys had contracts, some guys didn't. I want absolute clarity and confidence built before you get on that plane." - Eoin Morgan concluded.

RCB and Kevin Pietersen

Former England captain and commentator Kevin Pietersen didn't hold back as he criticized Royal Challengers Bangaluru’s (RCB) inconsistent performance in IPL 2024 following their elimination from the lucrative T20 league on Wednesday, May 22.

RCB's roller-coaster journey came to an end after they suffered a heartbreaking four-wicket loss to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2024 Eliminator at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The RR managed to break RCB’s 6-match winning streak with a perfect all-round attack.

Analyzing RCB's IPL 2024 campaign as reported by India Today, the Englishman pointed out the big difference between their early struggles and their late resurgence in the tournament. Notably, RCB has yet to clinch an IPL title despite making it to the IPL 2024 playoffs on ten occasions.

What on earth happened for the first month of IPL 2024?: Kevin Pietersen to RCB

Well, Pietersen questioned RCB's slow start this season by stating: “From Bengaluru's point of view, they can take a lot of heart from how they played over the last sort of 4 to 5 weeks. But they've also got to stay to themselves. What on earth happened for the first month of the tournament?”

However, the former England skipper hailed RCB's remarkable turnaround in the IPL 2024, but he emphasized the challenge of maintaining such long winning streaks. He added, “Because you can't expect yourself to win 7, 8, or 9 games in a row. It just doesn't happen. You have to create history.”

Before losing the Eliminator to RR, RCB recorded six consecutive wins after losing seven games on the trot, but Pietersen still believes that the Bengaluru-based franchise must reflect on their initial setbacks in the IPL 2024, which ultimately disrupted their campaign.

Meanwhile, Pietersen acknowledged the logistical hurdles and grueling schedule of the IPL. Speaking about the demanding nature of the tournament, he noted: “Get up today and then go to Chennai flight tomorrow at some stage and then beat Hyderabad in Chennai on Friday night, okay, and then wake oppression and do what on Saturday today and then KKR are replaying brilliant cricket on Sunday.”

Kevin Pietersen empathizes with RCB fans

Pietersen expressed disappointment over RCB's repeated failures in the IPL and empathized with its dedicated fan base. “RCB's failure to capitalize on their potential is disheartening, especially considering their passionate supporters," the commentator lamented, referring to the passionate fanfare witnessed during the team's matches in the IPL 2024.

The Englishman signed off by saying, “Have a look at the celebrations when the women won that tournament. Have a look at what happened in the streets of Bangalore, and you can see how much it means. The fans were here, and I'm going, but we had 89,000 people. There are probably 88,000 of them that were rooting for Bangalore this evening, and that just typifies the expectation that these guys have to deal with.”

Notably, RCB won seven of their 14 league games this season before being knocked out by the Royals in the elimination. Now, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and RR will battle out to get the ticket to IPL 2024, where they will face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 26 in Chennai.

Andy Flower Mohammed Siraj

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower has offered insights into the team's strategy for the next year's Indian Premier League (IPL). Andy Flower said that Royal Challengers Bengaluru will need "highly skillful bowlers" for the conditions at Chinnaswamy Stadium in the next season.

The Royal Challengers suffered a four-wicket defeat against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Eliminator match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, May 22. RCB's campaign ended as they failed to chase down a total of 173 runs. The Royals chased down the target in 19 overs to advance to Qualifier 2 of the season.

It's A Bit Early To Talk About That - Andy Flower

At the post-match press conference, Andy Flower highlighted the need to recruit highly skilled bowlers to execute specific plans at their home ground in the IPL 2024. Flower stated that simply having pace is not enough, and they need intelligent bowlers in Bengaluru.

"As far as recruitment for next year. it's a bit early to talk about that. Quite frankly, I don't want to talk about that yet. I do think though the Chinnaswamy has some particular qualities that we need to be able to exploit," Flower told reporters.

"You certainly need highly skillful bowlers at Chinnaswamy. Simply pace is not going to be the answer there. You need skillful, intelligent bowlers and people that can bowl to really specific plans at Chinnaswamy," he added.

The Faf du Plessis-led team found it challenging to capitalize on their high-scoring home ground, winning only one out of four matches. However, the Bengaluru-based team bounced back strongly, winning the last three home games.

They've Led From The From Front As Role Models - Andy Flower

The RCB team suffered seven losses in their first eight matches of the IPL 2024. However, the Royal Challengers showcased an impressive turnaround. The Faf du Plessis-led team secured six consecutive wins, including a crucial win against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Andy Flower praised Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli for motivating the team during their impressive turnaround. Flower credited their leadership and performance on the field as key factors in fighting back after a difficult start to the tournament.

"I think our guys have fought brilliantly over the last 10 weeks to come back from our first half of the tournament was a great effort. And I certainly would pay tribute to Faf du Plessis for his captaincy and Faf and Virat [Kohli] for the way they've led from the front as role models and professional sports people. But also the way they've played."

"They both really been great role models for everyone else and the rest of the boys fought really hard to get us back into the tournament,"
Flower further said.

With the IPL 2025 Mega Auction coming up, Andy Flower will play a crucial role in RCB's team building. His involvement in retention, release, and acquisition decisions is significant. The number of retentions permitted per team will be interesting, and RCB has key decisions to make in that regard.

RCB

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed RCB to come back strongly in IPL 2025 and win the championship next year. Royal Challengers Bengaluru's dream run in the ongoing IPL 2024 came to an end on Wednesday (May 22) with a 4-wicket loss against Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Asked to bat first, the Bengaluru-based outfit posted a competitive total of 172 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Although no RCB batter could score a fifty, there were some useful contributions from the likes of Rajat Patidar (34), Virat Kohli (33) and Mahipal Lomror (32). For RR, Avesh Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin impressed with the ball, taking three and two wickets respectively.

Also Read: Andy Flower blames Mohammed Siraj and company for RCB's exit; hints at Siraj's exclusion next year

With the bat, the Sanju Samson-led side chased down the total in 19 overs. RR were reeling at 86 for 3 and then 112 for 4 at one stage but the likes of Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, and Rovman Powell came up with fine knocks to take their team home.

The defeat ended a brilliant run for RCB in the tournament. RCB's chances of qualifying for the playoffs looked done and dusted after they lost seven of the first eight games. However, they stormed into the playoffs by winning six games in a row. Not only did they win those games but won them in a dominating fashion to have a good net run-rate as well.

Michael Vaughan's prediction for RCB:

While RCB failed to win the title once again, former England skipper Michael Vaughan believes they will have a good chance next season. Vaughan stated that RCB's head coach Andy Flower and his fellow coaches have managed to 'find a great deal about the group' and backed him to form a winning squad for the next season. He also heaped praise on Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis for leading the team's charge with the bat again.

"Those two were excellent. You expect that, they have been doing it for many years. RCB will be disappointed because they couldn't get through. But Andy Flower and his management team have found out a great deal about this group. So for next year, I will make a statement, the RCB team will be very close," Vaughan was quoted as saying by Times Now.

"I know the way Andy Flower and his team operate and he will have done his research on every single player in that squad. He will know exactly now who he wants to keep. He will have an idea of exactly who they are going to try and get in the auction to build a team to play at their home venue. They are not playing well enough over the course of all the IPLs.

"They have not had the DNA of knowing how to win at home. You have to win your home games, you guarantee pretty much 80 percent of those home games to be won, you win a few away and you always qualify for the last four. That's why Andy Flower will work on this to make sure that he gets the team that knows exactly how to play on those pitches in Bengaluru,"
he added.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals will now lock horns against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second qualifier on Friday (May 24) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The winner of the game will be playing against Kolkata Knight Riders in the final on Sunday.
