The Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) went head-to-head with the Sam Curran-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 42nd match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Friday, April 26, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The two-time IPL champions entered the clash with a superior head-to-head record against the Punjab Kings. Out of 32 matches played between the teams, the Knight Riders emerged victorious in 21 games with the Kings winning 11. At the Eden Gardens, things were no different as Kolkata Knight Riders won 9 out of the 12 games played between the teams.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings invited Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first in the match and the opening duo of Sunil Narine and Phil Salt demolished the PBKS bowling attack. After Phil Salt (75) and Sunil Narine (71) got out, Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, and Shreyas Iyer helped KKR register the highest-ever score at Eden Gardens - 261/6.

Chasing the target, Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow provided PBKS with an exceptional start by playing an attacking brand of cricket. Prabhsimran got out after scoring a fifty, but Jonny Bairstow slammed a brutal ton. In the end, Shashank Singh joined Jonny Bairstow and together they powered PBKS to an 8-wicket win.

At the post-match presentation ceremony, Shreyas Iyer said that his batters did a great job in the match. Shreyas Iyer said:

"I would have (taken 260 at the start of the day). The way the batters batted was tremendous to see, Sunny coming in.. the way Salt batted, they delivered and it was a treat for the eyes."

Shreyas Iyer added that they need to go back to the drawing board and come up with better ideas after a big failure with the ball. Shreyas Iyer signed off by showering praise on Sunil Narine for his heroics. Shreyas Iyer elaborated:

"Both the teams played tremendously, one of those games where you go back to the drawing board and see where it went wrong especially not being able to defend 260. We have to sum up the conditions and come up with better ideas. It is brilliant to see him (Narine) go out there and strike the ball, hopefully he keeps continuing with such performances."

Before their IPL 2024 meeting, the last time these two teams locked horns with each other, a thriller was witnessed in Kolkata that saw the home team winning on the last ball by 5 wickets on May 8. Bowling first, KKR restricted the Punjab Kings to 179/7 in 20 overs as Varun Chakravarthy picked a three-wicket haul and Harshit Rana, Nitish Rana, and Suyash Sharma shared four wickets between them.

Chasing the target, Jason Roy and Nitish Rana played really good innings from the top order to lay the foundation for a successful run-chase that was eventually capitalized by Andre Russell and Rinku Singh, who finished off the match.

Ravichandran Ashwin took a brutal dig at the former England National Cricket Team star batsman Kevin Pietersen after a world record chase was completed at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 26 during the game between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to field first in the match. They made one change to the playing XI by bringing in Jonny Bairstow for Liam Livingstone. KKR also made one change by replacing injured Mitchell Starc with Dushmantha Chameera.

Batting first, Kolkata Knight Riders openers Phil Salt and Sunil Narine demolished the Punjab Kings bowling attack. They played attacking cricket throughout their stay in the middle. After Phil Salt (75) and Sunil Narine (71) got out, Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, and Shreyas Iyer came and blasted quick runs to lead KKR to the highest-ever score at Eden Gardens - 261/6.

Chasing the target, Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh laid the platform for a win by playing an attacking brand of cricket. The duo took the bowlers to the cleaners and made sure that kept PBKS in the match. Prabhsimran got out after scoring 54, but Jonny Bairstow remained unbeaten till the end. The England batter slammed a brutal 108 runs and Shashank Singh smashed a sensational 68 runs as PBKS pulled off the biggest run-chase in the history of T20 cricket with 8 wickets in hand and 8 balls remaining.

Speaking during the match on-air, Kevin Pietersen said that the boundaries at Eden Gardens are of normal size and Ravichandran Ashwin took to X to react to his statement with laughing emojis.

He has given me complete freedom - Shashank Singh on PBKS coach

Speaking after the match, one of the heroes of Punjab Kings in the dull IPL 2024 campaign - Shashank Singh - said that he knew that the ball was coming good on the bat and he was ready to take down the bowlers. He said:

"When I was in the dug-out, I was just watching the behaviour of the pitch, felt it was coming on nicely with good bounce. Just backed myself to hit the other bowlers, was happy to take the singles and doubles off Narine, we wanted to play him out.

Shashank Singh revealed that the PBKS coach Trevor Bayliss has given him full freedom to play his natural game. Shashank Singh also lauded Jonny Bairstow and said that they can still qualify for the playoffs.

"He has given me complete freedom (on coach Trevor Bayliss), has told me to play the way I can. A big positive when Jonny (Bairstow) supports you (from the other end), he has played 100 Test matches and to see him clap for you, you'll feel happy and vindicated. We still have 5 matches to go, we'll take it one match at a time and I believe that we can still qualify to the playoffs."

While the cricketing fraternity enjoyed the run-fest between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens on Friday (April 26), veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin perhaps did not like it much.

PBKS pulled off a record chase as they chased down 262 runs to get back to winning ways in IPL 2024. In fact, the visitors crossed the finishing line with as many as eight balls remaining in the innings. The Punjab-outfit stayed on top right from the start as their batters took the KKR bowlers to the cleaners.

Match review in short:

Prabhsimran Singh set the tone for the world-record chase by smashing an 18-ball fifty inside the powerplay as he and Jonny Bairstow shared a 93-run stand off just 36 balls for the first wicket. After his departure, Bairstow led the charge with the bat by smashing a 45-ball century. He and Rilee Rossouw shared an 85-run stand for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed by Sunil Narine for 26.

The breakthrough, however, did not bring any respite for KKR as Shashank Singh fired on all cylinders from the word go. Bairstow played the role of the second fiddle after Rossouw's departure as Shashank took charge of the innings. Shashank smashed an unbeaten 68 off just 28 balls with the help of two fours and as many as eight sixes while Bairstow scored 108 off just 48 balls.

Earlier in the game, KKR finished their innings on 261 for 6 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Openers Phil Salt and Sunil Narine laid the foundation for the big total by scoring 75 and 71 runs respectively. The likes of Venkatesh Iyer (39), Andre Russell (24) and Shreyas Iyer (28) also played useful cameos for the hosts.

Ravichandran Ashwin reacts to run-fest:

As the KKR and PBKS batters took the bowlers to the cleaners and combined to score more than 550 runs in less than 40 overs, Ravichandran Ashwin made a heartfelt plea. Jumping in the defence of the bowlers who have struggled to contain the batsmen in the ongoing IPL 2024. Ravichandran Ashwin took to X (formerly Twitter) to write a SOS message.

"Save the bowlers" someone plsss," Ravichandran Ashwin wrote in his post followed by a series of SOS emojis.

Punjab Kings, on Friday (April 26), created history against Kolkata Knight Riders by pulling off a record chase to keep their slim playoff chances alive in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024).

PBKS ended their four-match losing streak in style by chasing down a world record 262 against KKR at the Eden Gardens. Asked to bat first, KKR posted a 250-plus total for the second this season. Their star openers - Phil Salt and Sunil Narine starred with the bat again, scoring 75 and 71 runs respectively before the middle-order batters took the hosts to a 260-plus total at the Eden Gardens.

PBKS had their back against the wall after KKR finished their innings. However, the visitors responded in style with the bat and chased down the mammoth total in just 18.4 overs by losing only two wickets. Jonny Bairstow starred with the bat by scoring an unbeaten century while Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh scored whirlwind fifties.

Bairstow remained unbeaten on 108 off 48 balls while Prabhsimran smashed an 18-ball fifty inside the powerplay to give his team a solid start. Shashank Singh, on the other hand, scored 68 runs off just 28 balls with the help of two fours and eight sixes.

PBKS lose star player:

Hours after the historic win over KKR, PBKS lost the services of their star allrounder Sikandar Raza. On Saturday morning, the Zimbabwe star took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his departure from the IPL to link up with his national team for the upcoming series against Bangladesh. The five-match T20I series is scheduled to be played from May 3 to 12.

"Thank you India, @IPL and @PunjabKingsIPL for having me , loved every minute of it. Time for national duty now," wrote Sikandar Raza.

One of the best limited-overs allrounder in the world, Sikandar Raza could not make much of an impact in the ongoing IPL. He did not get enough opportunities to showcase his talent as he played only two games and scored 43 runs. In the last edition of the IPL, he had played seven games and had scored 139 runs with the help of one half-century. Sikandar Raza had also picked up three wickets.

South Africa legend Dale Steyn came up with a heartwarming message for Shashank Singh after his heroics against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday (April 28) at the Eden Gardens.

The right-handed batsman continued his stunning run in IPL 2024 to help PBKS pull off a record 262-run chase against the two-time IPL champions in their own backyard. Asked to bat first, KKR posted a mammoth total of 261/6 in the allotted 20 overs. Phil Salt and Sunil Narine starred with the bat once again, scoring 75 and 71 runs respectively to power KKR to their second 260-plus total this season.

In reply, PBKS chased down the huge total in 18.4 overs. Jonny Bairstow was the architect of the win with his unbeaten century while Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh scored whirlwind half-centuries. Prabhsimran set the tone for the chase by smashing an 18-ball fifty inside the powerplay before Bairstow took charge.

After Rilee Rossouw departed for 26 runs in the 13th over, Shashank Singh took charge of the innings. PBKS still needed 84 runs in less than eight overs when Shashank Singh walked out to bat. He fired on all cylinders from the very start to power PBKS to a historic win. The right-handed batsman smashed two fours and eight sixes to remain unbeaten on 68 from just 28 balls.

Dale Steyn did not take long to react to Shashank Singh's stunning knock against KKR. Soon after the PBKS batter starred with the bat in the record chase, the former South Africa pace spearhead took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his delight over the batsman's performance.

Recalling the time when Shashank Singh was with Sunrisers Hyderabad, the former SRH bowler and coach heaped praise on the batsman for his attitude and his performance against KKR, writing:

'Wrong purchase' Shashank Singh stars in IPL 2024:

Shashank Singh has been one of the very few positives for PBKS this season. He is currently the leading run-scorer for his team. In nine games, he has scored 263 runs with the help of two half-centuries. He is averaging more than 65 and has a strike-rate of over 182 in IPL 2024.

It is a remarkable turnaround for a player who grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons during the auction last year. He was accidentally or wrongly bought by PBKS in the last auction. The franchise wanted to buy a different player but ended up with him.

PBKS even requested the auctioneer to reverse the bid but it did not happen. Shashank has responded to the incident in style by being PBKS' most important batsman in the ongoing IPL 2024.
