Rahul Chahar, Sunil Narine

Continuing his stunning run with the bat in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Sunil Narine, on Friday (April 26), impressed once again in the ongoing game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens.

The left-handed batsman smashed scored 71 runs off just 32 balls with the help of 9 fours and four sixes. He got going by hitting Sam Curran for a brilliant four in the very first over and did not look back. By the time the powerplay ended, Sunil Narine had raced away to 38 runs off just 15 balls.

He completed his fifty off just 23 balls in the eighth over. Sunil Narine's knock finally came to an end in the 11th over when he was dismissed by Rahul Chahar. The leg-spinner bowled a wrong'un and Narine ended up hitting the shot straight to Jonny Bairstow at long-on. And as soon as Bairstow took the catch, Rahul Chahar came up with an interesting gesture. The PBKS spinner was seen turning back towards Narine with a folded hand gesture.

Watch Rahul Chahar's gesture after dismissing Sunil Narine:

Apart from scoring 71 runs, Sunil Narine also shared a big 138-run stand with his fellow opener Phil Salt for the first wicket. Salt departed in the 13th over after scoring 75 runs off just 37 balls with the help of six fours and as many sixes. Talking about the game, KKR finished their innings on a mammoth total of 261/6.

KKR are eyeing their sixth win tonight. The two-time IPL champions are currently at the second spot in the points table with five wins from seven games. A win tonight will further take them closer to the playoffs. PBKS, on the other hand, are languishing at the ninth spot in the points table with just two wins from eight games. PBKS need a remarkable turnaround to advance ahead of the league stage for the first time since 2014.

KKR innings

Riding on whirlwind half-centuries from Phil Salt and Sunil Narine, Kolkata Knight Riders, on Friday (April 26), piled up a mammoth total of 261/6 against Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens.

Asked to bat first, KKR were off to a flying start with Narine and Salt firing on all cylinders from the word go. At the end of the powerplay, KKR had raced away to 76 for 0. In the 8th over, Narine completed his fifty off just 23 balls before Salt completed his fifty off only 25 balls in the ninth over.

Salt did not last long after Narine's departure and was clean-bowled by PBKS captain Sam Curran in the 13th over. The England star scored 75 runs from just 37 balls with the help of six fours and six sixes.

After the opener's departure, the likes of Venkatesh Iyer (39), Andre Russell (24), and Shreyas Iyer (28) came up with crucial cameos to take KKR to a 260-plus total for the second time in IPL 2024. KKR also broke the record for the highest T20 total at the Eden Gardens. This is the fifth time in eight games this season that KKR have crossed the 200-run mark.

Here is how Twitter reacted to KKR's innings:

A captain's knock from Shreyas Iyer. In last game when KKR needed an anchor, Shreyas scored 50(35) and made sure that KKR cross 200.

And tonight when KKR needed a cameo from him, he came in 16th over and scored 28(10).

Well done captain, I hope this please all KKR's fans💜💜 pic.twitter.com/h3Lzs4zNhq

With 261 runs on the board, KKR will be fancying themselves to win the game and bolster their spot in the top two of the IPL 2024 points table. They are currently second in the table with five wins from seven games. Another win will take them further closer to the playoffs spot.

PBKS, on the other hand, need to come up with something extraordinary to pull off the highest chase in the history of the IPL. With just two wins from eight games, PBKS are currently languishing at the ninth spot in the points table and another defeat will all but end their slim playoff chances.

Gautam Gambhir

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir was at his furious best during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 game against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The 42nd game of the tournament between the teams is taking place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Kolkata Knight Riders have been at their exceptional best with the bat in the ongoing game against Punjab Kings. The home team have brought up their brutal best with the bat and has made sure that they put the opposition under pressure at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

It has been raining fours and sixes in Kolkata as the Shreyas Iyer-led side has been breathing fire with the bat. Amid all this there was a moment of seriousness as well which made even Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir get angry after his team didn't get the run.

During the last ball of the 14th over, Rahul Chahar bowled a short delivery outside off. Andre Russell cut to cover, where Ashutosh Sharma made the stop. He threw the ball wide of Jitesh Sharma and the batters seized an opportunity to get a run and sealed the single.

However, umpire Anil Chaudhary denied the Kolkata Knight Riders single. The official stated that the ball was dead when the batters took the single and hence the run wasn't counted. This made KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir furious as he stood from his seat and went on to have a chat with an umpire on the sidelines.

However, after that, Venkatesh Iyer (39), Andre Russell (24) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (28) played brutal innings with the bat. Based on the collective effort, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) posted the total of 261 runs on the board. For Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 2/35.

Don't want to give too much away with a chase still to go - Phil Salt

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Phil Salt talked about the innings that he played against Punjab Kings. He was delighted with his opening stand with Sunil Narine and claimed that they don't want to get excited because the chase is still pending. Speaking to broadcasters after the innings, he stated:

"We know how good Sunil has been and it was pretty good to get a partnership. Don't want to give too much away with a chase still to go."

Kolkata Knight Riders would be keen to win the game and strengthen their position in the game. A win here would make them favorites to qualify for the playoffs.

Sunil Narine runs out Prabhsimran Singh

Sunil Narine, on Friday (April 26), gave Kolkata Knight Riders the much-needed breakthrough against Punjab Kings in the ongoing game by coming up with a brilliant direct hit to run out the dangerous Prabhsimran Singh at the Eden Gardens.

Chasing an improbable 262, PBKS openers - Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow came out all guns blazing. Prabhsimran was the one who took the attack to KKR at first as he took their bowlers to the cleaners. The right-handed batsman reached his fifty in just 18 balls in the fifth over.

In the sixth over, Bairstow joined the party as well. After scoring 12 runs from 10 balls till the fifth over, he went berserk in the sixth over against left-arm spinner Anukul Roy. The England star hit the spinner for two sixes and three fours in the first five deliveries as PBKS raced away to 93 for no loss with one ball still remaining in the powerplay.

The visitors were looking set to finish the powerplay on top before Prabhsimran Singh was run out on the final ball of the sixth over as he tried to take a non-existent single. Bairstow failed to make a good connection with the ball and inside-edged the shot towards Sunil Narine at short fine leg.

It was Prabhsimran Singh's call and he called for a single. Bairstow duly obliged but Prabhsimran failed to get back inside the crease in time. Before the PBKS opener could get back inside the crease safely, Sunil Narine picked up the ball and hit the bullseye at the striker's end. Prabhsimran Singh departed after scoring 54 runs off just 20 balls with the helo of four fours and five sixes.

Earlier in the game, half-centuries from Sunil Narine and Phil Salt propelled KKR to a massive total of 261/6 after they were asked to bat first. Narine scored 71 off 32 balls while Salt scored 75 off 37.

Kkr is struggling with bowling big time. This is the third time they are struggling to defend 200+ score. Luckily they survived vs RCB on the last ball but it’s a big worry for them.

Shashank Singh made it look even more easy. Blud is disappointed PBKS bowlers didn't concede more for his century. What striking, so clean and pleasant.

If you ever make a mistake in your life, may you be blessed with the luck PBKS had when they bought the "wrong" Shashank Singh at the auction. What a player! pic.twitter.com/nAYJU0TvAN

Sam Curran

Under the leadership of stand-in captain Sam Curran, Punjab Kings took on the Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 42nd match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Friday, April 26, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Opting to bowl first in the match, Punjab Kings bowlers were made look clueless by the KKR openers Phil Salt and Sunil Narine. Salt and Narine smashed 75 and 71 runs respectively while Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, and Andre Russell made significant contributions to help KKR post 261 for 6 on the board. For PBKS, Arshdeep Singh picked two wickets while Sam Curran, Harshal Patel, and Rahul Chahar got one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh destroyed the KKR bowling unit. Singh failed to play a big knock, but Jonny Bairstow converted his fifty into a triple-figure score and along with Shashank Singh steered PBKS to an 8-wicket win. This was the highest-ever chase in the history of T20 cricket.

Speaking after the match, Sam Curran expressed his delight over the win and said that cricket is turning into baseball. Sam Curran said:

"Very pleasing. Most importantly the win. Cricket is turning into baseball. We have had a few tough weeks. But we hung in there. The way guys train. The confidence and the coaches. The small grounds and the dew. The reviews which might give you an extra ball."

Sam Curran further lauded Jonny Bairstow for his stellar knock and labeled Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma as the find of the tournament. Sam Curran stated:

"We hung in there and managed to chase it down with balls to spare. Pleased for Johnny. What an amazing knock. Shashank Singh has been the find of the tournament for us. Ashutosh as well. Proud of everyone."
