Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) squared off with each other in the 39th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The game between the two teams took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday (23rd April).

Lucknow Super Giants emerged victorious in the 39th game of the IPL 2024 as they produced a sensational effort with the bat and ball. They thumped Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium to win their 5th game of the season.

CSK vs LSG IPL 2024 Match 39- Lucknow Super Giants innings: Ruturaj Gaikwad's ton and Shivam Dube's fifty take Chennai Super Kings to over 200

Chennai Super Kings were asked to bat first and they didn't have a great start with the bat. Ajinkya Rahane perished early as he scored just 1 run and after that, Daryl Mitchell (11) looked scratchy at the crease as the home team lost two early wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Ravindra Jadeja (16) and Ruturaj Gaikwad then bailed the team out of trouble with their 52-run partnership. The wicket of Jadeja was a blessing in disguise for the team as Shivam Dube changed the course of the game with his brutal power-hitting.

Shivam Dube took the pressure off Ruturaj Gaikwad as the duo took the attack to the Lucknow Super Giants batters. They made bowlers look clueless and made sure that they got some quick runs on the board, having lost early wickets in the match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The duo added 104 runs and put their team in a commanding position. While Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 108 runs, Dube ended with a 66-run knock. Based on their terrific performances with the bat, Chennai Super Kings posted a gigantic total of 210 runs on the board at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

For Lucknow Super Giants, Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 1/28. Apart from him, Mohsin Khan and Yash Thakur picked one wicket each for the team.

CSK vs LSG IPL 2024 Match 39- Lucknow Super Giants innings: Marcus Stoinis hits blistering ton with the bat

It was the worst possible start for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the chase as they lost Quinton de Kock on the third ball of the match. After that skipper KL Rahul (16) tried to get going as well but he too fell early. To worsen the case more, Devdutt Padikkal (13) had a torrid time at the field.

With Lucknow Super Giants reeling at 88/3, Marcus Stoinis brought his team back into the game with his magnificent innings. Nicholas Pooran (34) at the other end supported him well as the duo took the game deep at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The all-rounder brought up a brutal ton and ended with an unbeaten 124 runs, taking his team home with ease. Deepak Hooda (17*) supported him well as LSG chased the target with 6 wickets in hand.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced off against the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 39th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Tuesday, April 23, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk.

After being invited to bat first in the match, CSK lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane for 1. The No.3 and No.4. batters - Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja - failed to make significant contributions with the bat but next came Shivam Dube, who provided sensational support to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Ruturaj Gaikwad paced his innings perfectly and converted his half-century into a triple-figure score while Shivam Dube (66 off 27) blasted a quickfire fifty. Gaikwad finished with 108 runs off 60 balls as CSK posted a huge total of 210/4 on the board.

Defending the score, CSK reduced LSG to 33/2 but Marcus Stoinis played one of the best T20 innings of his career and bailed the team out of trouble. He was involved in some brilliant partnerships that brought LSG back into the game.

Marcus Stoinis remained unbeaten till the very end and smoked 124 runs off 63 balls, with 13 fours and 6 sixes, to complete the run-chase in 19.3 overs and lead his team to an outstanding 6-wicket win.

Speaking after the match, Ruturaj Gaikwad labeled the defeat as a tough pill to swallow but he praised Marcus Stoinis for his stupendous innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad said:

"Tough pill to swallow, but good game of cricket. LSG played really well in the back end. We had the game in control till 13-14 overs, but Stoinis played a great innings."

Ruturaj Gaikwad also said that the dew played a part in CSK's defeat as it took their spinners out of the game. Ruturaj Gaikwad stated:

"(On dew) It played a part, there was a huge amount of dew and it took our spinners out of the game. We could have otherwise controlled the game better and taken it deeper. But these are parts of the game, can’t control it.

Ruturaj Gaikwad further answered the hot question of Ravindra Jadeja's promotion to No.4 once again, which delayed Shivam Dube's arrival in the middle. Ruturaj Gaikwad asserted that they promoted Jadeja because they lost the second wicket inside powerplay. He also spoke about Dube's batting position. He said:

"Jaddu is batting at number 4 since we lost the second wicket within the powerplay. (On Dube’s entry point) Our thinking is clear that after the powerplay if there is a wicket, Shivam will come out to bat. We can’t force batters to get out after. To be honest, I thought our target wasn’t enough, it was just about par because of the dew we’ve seen during our practice sessions. But credit to the way LSG batted."

Chennai Super Kings' Home Performance In IPL 2024 Before The Lucknow Super Giants Clash

CSK started off their IPL 2024 season by defeating the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at their fortress - Chepauk - by 6 wickets. Bowling first they stopped RCB at a total of 173/6 and then completed the run-chase inside 19 overs with Mustafizur Rahman winning the Player of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance.

Chennai Super Kings next defeated the former IPL champions - Gujarat Titans and the Kolkata Knight Riders - by 63 runs and 7 wickets respectively to complete a hat-trick of wins at home. Against GT, Shivam Dube was awarded Player of the Match for his amazing half-century, and in the KKR clash, it was Ravindra Jadeja's stellar performance with the ball that earned him the award.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) took on the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 39th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Tuesday, April 23, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.

KL Rahul-led side won the toss and they opted to bowl first in the match keeping in mind the dew factor in the second innings. Initially, the LSG bowlers were brilliant as they kept the run rate in check and picked two early wickets.

However, once CSK stars Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube joined forces, they took the LSG bowlers to the cleaners. Gaikwad smashed 108 runs and Dube slammed 66 as CSK registered 210/4.

Chasing the target, Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul, and Devdutt Padikkal failed, but Marcus Stoinis batted exceptionally and stitched up 70 runs in 34 balls with Nicholas, who also batted well, to bring LSG back in the game.

After Pooran got out, Stoinis took the responsibility on his shoulders and smashed a blistering ton to power his team to a 6-wicket victory. He smoked 124 off 63 balls to bag the Player of the Match award

At the post-match presentation ceremony, KL Rahul said that it was a special victory for them as they were behind in the game for the most part. KL Rahul stated:

"Very special, especially when it’s a game like that. We were way behind the game when we were batting so it was very special to pull it off. It was a fresh start, both teams started off at 0. Different conditions here. I think they started off really well and put us under pressure. 170-180 would’ve been a great total here but they batted really well."

KL Rahul showered ultimate praise on Marcus Stoinis for steering LSG to win and said that the Australian all-rounder did clever batting and picked his bowlers perfectly.

"Full credit to Stoinis. It was not just power hitting, it was very clever batting. He picked his bowlers and played very well. (On sending Stoinis at 3) We felt like we needed to be braver and capitalize the powerplay and needed 1 power-hitter in the top-3. I’ve realized that T20 cricket has changed in the past couple of years, 170-180 doesn’t always cut it. You need to go harder in the powerplay and the impact player rule also gives you a bit more depth."

KL Rahul, who has recently started playing aggressively, further spoke about the change to his batting approach and said that he was happy that he is being successful with it. KL Rahul signed off by talking about his stunning catch to send back Ajinkya Rahane and cheekily said that he hopes to win the Catch of the Tournament award for his efforts. KL Rahul elaborated:

"(On the change to his own batting) Haven't played much T20 cricket so happy that it’s coming off. There’s no set plan, apart from the openers, everyone else is ready to go out whenever we feel it's right. We’re going to keep it flexible. (On his catch earlier) Not bad, not bad… I hope I get the catch of the tournament award (smiles), I was just being modest."

LSG vs CSK IPL 2024 Previous Meeting Result

The previous meeting between the two teams was a one-sided affair at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on April 19. After electing to bowl first in the match, the LSG bowlers did a fantastic job and restricted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a decent total of 176/6.

Ravindra Jadeja hit a half-century, Ajinkya Rahane and Moeen Ali contributed runs in 30s while MS Dhoni played a sensational 28-run cameo. For LSG, Krunal Pandya picked two wickets while Marcus Stoinis, Yash Thakur, Mohsin Khan, and Ravi Bishnoi managed to bag one wicket each.

Chasing the target, KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock gave a remarkable start to Lucknow Super Giants and almost sealed the win for the team with their 134-run stand. After the openers got out, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran batted well to help LSG complete the run-chase in 19 overs. The Lucknow Super Giants managed to thump the 5-time champions by 8 wickets.

KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul couldn't control his emotions after his team thrashed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 39th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 courtesy of Marcus Stoinis. The match between the two teams took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

It was a special performance from Marcus Stoinis at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as he single-handedly took his team home. In the chase of 211 runs, it seemed they would lose by a big margin as they lost early wickets and were playing the catching game.

However, Marcus Stoinis made sure that he oozes his class with the bat. The all-rounder walked in at No.3 and stood tall on the one end while wickets kept falling at the other end. He made sure that he kept scoring runs at the one end to keep his team in the game.

Marcus Stoinis was at his best as he hardly put a foot wrong and played some brutal shots in his innings. The all-rounder slammed Chennai Super Kings bowlers all over the park and kept the run rate in check. He got vital support from Nicholas Pooran (34) first as the duo put the opposition under pressure.

After Marcus Stoinis got his half-century, it didn't seem at once that he would get out. He notched up a magnificent century but he knew that he still had a job left. He didn't lose his calm after the century and took his team home at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Deepak Hooda (17*) played a crucial hand in the end and took the game to last over. With 17 runs needed off the last over, Marcus Stoinis brought out his brutal version chased the target inside the three balls and took his team to the 6-wicket win in the tournament. He scored an unbeaten 124 runs and guided his team to 5th win in IPL 2024.

As he hit the winning runs, the reaction of skipper KL Rahul caught the attention of many. The keeper-batter yelled loudly in jubilation inside the dressing room whereas the entire dugout of the Lucknow Super Giants went berserk. Few players even ran onto the field to celebrate with Stoinis.

Here's the video:

Lots of ebbs and flows, just tried to keep it in control - Marcus Stoinis after taking LSG hone

Marcus Stoinis opened up about his innings after the game, stating that he had some bowlers to target and also credited Nicholas Pooran for taking the pressure off him. Speaking to broadcasters during the post-match presentation, he explained:

"In these competitions, there are plenty of better opening batters better than me so I’ll leave it to them. It’s not just go go go, there were some bowlers we wanted to target and some bowlers we wanted to be more cautious against. There was a phase where I wasn’t able to hit the boundaries so it was great Pooran could come in and take the pressure off.

"Lots of ebbs and flows just tried to keep it in control. You’re planning and structuring, you're not liking certain bowlers and you’re liking others more. I do think T20 cricket is changing, the scores that have been scored, the impact player role and how teams are taking on the bowlers."

Lucknow Super Giants will be next seen in action when they take on Rajasthan Royals on Saturday (27th April).

Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis, on Tuesday (April 23), came up with one of the best knocks in the history of IPL to power Lucknow Super Giants to a memorable win over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

CSK had won all of their three home games this season before taking on LSG. And when Ruturaj Gaikwad's century and Shivam Dube's whirlwind fifty powered them to a big total of 210/4, they looked destined to win the fourth game as well.

Leading from the very front, Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 108 runs from 60 balls. Dube, on the other hand, slammed 66 runs from just 27 balls with the help of three fours and seven sixes. In reply, LSG were reeling at 33 for 2 inside the powerplay after losing the wickets of their star batters - Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul. Devdutt Padikkal could not do much with the bat either and departed for 13.

LSG's cheeky message after win over CSK:

Marcus Stoinis, however, waged a lone battle and scored an unbeaten century to pull off a miraculous win for his side. He completed his century off 56 balls and remained till the end to take his team home. In the final over when LSG needed 17 runs, the Australia star scored the required runs in just three legal deliveries by hitting Mustafizur Rahman for a six and two fours.

And as Marcus Stoinis powered LSG to the famous win, the franchise came up with a cheeky message that might not go down well with the CSK fans. Soon after Marcus Stoinis' heroics, LSG took to Twitter to praise him with a compliment that is related to CSK legend MS Dhoni as they wrote: "MS FINISHES OFF IN STYLE IN CHENNAI!"

MS FINISHES OFF IN STYLE IN CHENNAI! pic.twitter.com/eYw043Z9zs

— Lucknow Super Giants (@LucknowIPL) April 23, 2024

Marcus Stoinis remained unbeaten on 124. His knock came off 63 balls and was studded with 13 fours and six sixes. With the win, LSG have moved to the fourth spot in the points table. They now have five wins from eight games. On the other hand, CSK are at the fifth spot with four wins and as many defeats this season.

Hardik Pandya

The race for the finisher's spot in the Indian team for the forthcoming T20 World Cup is heating up. Not very long ago, Hardik Pandya was the front-runner to be the main finisher of the team.

However, things have changed now as Hardik Pandya has struggled to do well in the ongoing IPL 2024. His alarming dip in form has opened the gates for other players to be considered for the spot. As per reports, Hardik Pandya needs to deliver with the ball consistently to be in contention for the World Cup and is unlikely to find a spot in the team as a specialist batsman.

One of the players who is competing with Pandya for the finisher's role in the Indian team is Shivam Dube. While Pandya has struggled to get going in IPL 2024, Dube has looked impressed one and all with his power hitting in IPL 2024.

On Tuesday (April 23), he further enhanced his reputation by scoring a whirlwind half-century against Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The left-handed batsman smashed 66 runs from just 27 balls with the help of three fours and seven sixes. No bowler - spinner or pacer - was spared by Dube as he helped CSK post a big total after being asked to bat first.

Suresh Raina backs Shivam Dube for T20 World Cup:

While only time will tell whether Shivam Dube beats Hardik Pandya for a place in the World Cup squad or both get into the team, former India batsman Suresh Raina has urged the selectors to pick the former. As Dube took the LSG bowlers to the cleaners on Tuesday, Raina took to Twitter to state that the CSK star needs to be in the World Cup squad.

Tagging chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the former CSK star wrote: "World Cup loading for Shivam dube ! @imAagarkar bhai select karo please."

World Cup loading for Shivam dube ! @imAagarkar bhai select karo please 🇮🇳🙏 https://t.co/b7g0BxHRSp

Meanwhile, Dube's heroics eventually went in vain as a stunning unbeaten century from Marcus Stoinis powered LSG to a famous win. Asked to bat first, CSK posted 210/4 in 20 overs thanks to an unbeaten century from their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (108) and the 66-run knock from Dube. In reply, LSG chased down the total with three balls remaining.

Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis made sure to send a message to Cricket Australia over the contract snub after scoring a sensational match-winning century for Lucknow Super Giants against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

At a venue where batters usually struggle due to the sluggishness of the pitch, Marcus Stoinis came up with one of the best knocks in the history of the IPL. He single-handedly powered LSG to a six-wicket win over the defending champions in their own backyard.

Asked to bat first, CSK posted a huge total of 210/4 in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad starred with the bat for the hosts, scoring an unbeaten 108 runs from 60 balls. Shivam Dube also played a crucial knock for the champions, smashing 66 runs from just 27 balls with the help of three fours and seven sixes.

In reply, LSG were reeling at 33 for 2 inside the powerplay and were looking destined to suffer a loss. However, Marcus Stoinis, who was promoted to number three, waged a lone battle and went on to pull off a miraculous win for his side. He smashed an unbeaten 124 runs from just 63 balls to take his side over the finishing line with three balls remaining.

Marcus Stoinis on the contract snub:

After the match-winning knock, Marcus Stoinis made sure to make his stand clear over not getting the central contract from Cricket Australia. Last month, the CA announced the central contracts for 2024-25 season and Marcus Stoinis was a notable absentee from the 23-player list.

However, the veteran allrounder has made it clear that he is not disappointed over the snub but is still keen to ply his trade for Australia. It is the first time that he spoke about the snub publicly. After the match, he was asked whether he was trying to prove a point and in reply, he said:

"I've got a great relationship with the [Australia] coach [Andrew McDonald]. Me not getting a contract, I knew that a while ago. I think it is great to give younger kids a crack and let them take my spot. I'm absolutely fine with that on the contract list.

"But on the playing front, obviously want to make sure that I'm there and that's also why it's so lucky for us and for me particularly to have this competition [the IPL], that's why I love it so much,"
he added.

Stephen Fleming

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming lashed out at the Chepauk pitch over lack of assistance for the spinners after his team's defeat against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday (April 23).

CSK suffered a dismal six-wicket defeat as they failed to defend a big total of 210 runs at their home ground. It was also their first defeat of the season at home. CSK looked destined to win the game after a century from their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and a whirlwind half-century from Shivam Dube powered them to a big total of 210/4 in 20 overs.

In reply, LSG were reeling at 33 for 2 inside the powerplay with two of their main batters - KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock - back in the hut. However, Marcus Stoinis waged a lone battle and single-handedly inflicted a six-wicket defeat on CSK.

The Australia allrounder came up with one of the best knocks in the history of IPL to power LSG to a famous win. Stoinis scored an unbeaten 124 runs off 63 balls as LSG chased down 2011 runs with three balls remaining.

Stephen Fleming unhappy with the pitch:

Following the defeat, Stephen Fleming did not shy away from criticising the pitch in Chennai over not favouring the home side. The former New Zealand captain pointed out the lack of support for the spinners on the pitch. He went on to say that CSK's spin department has been made redundant due to the pitch.

CSK's spinners - Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali bowled two overs each in the game, conceding 16 and 21 runs respectively without picking any wicket. With the spinners not being able to make any impact, CSK relied on the fast-bowlers. However, dew nullified the pacers' impact as well as LSG chased down the total in the last over.

"We've had one pitch which was an excellent one I think, it turned and we won comfortably. Yeah, I'd like more synergy between the pitch and what we're trying to do. And I'd unashamedly say that it's your home ground, you got to defend and you pick teams accordingly," said Stephen Fleming.

"So when it's out of sync, you find it very difficult. It's not quite right yet but you just got to be good enough to play what's in front of you. We know that we can be stronger if conditions were a little bit different.

"If you look at that we've got spinners in the side, Theekshana as well. But it nullifies that when there's nothing really going on and then there's the dew as well makes it very difficult. We can wish for it, but if we don't get it we just have to get on with it. So that's what we're doing. But it does take a key component out of our attack. We've got Pathirana who's a weapon, Fiz has done well when it's slow but the spin department has been made redundant and I'd love it to change,"
he added.

Meanwhile, CSK have dropped to the fifth spot in the points table after the defeat against LSG. They now have four wins and as many losses in IPL 2024. LSG, on the other hand, are at the fourth spot with five wins and three defeats.
