Harbhajan Singh, Ashutosh Sharma, Shashank Singh

Former India National Cricket Team off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has lashed out at the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for their batting order in the match against the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday, April 18, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

Punjab Kings lost a nail-biting encounter against the Mumbai Indians by 9 runs to go down to the ninth spot in the Indian Premier League 2024 points table. Bowling first, PBKS let the Mumbai Indians post a total of 192/7 on the board as Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma fired with the bat.

Chasing the target, Punjab Kings decided to field a new opening combination in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan and they sent Prabhsimran Singh and Sam Curran to open the innings with Rilee Rossouw and Liam Livingstone coming to bat at No.3 and No.4.

All the above-mentioned batters were horrible with their performance and all of them were back in the dugout by the 3rd over itself as Punjab Kings were reduced to 14/4.

PBKS would've suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of the Hardik Pandya-led side had Ashutosh Sharma not stepped up with the bat along with Shashank Singh. The duo have been the shining light for PBKS throughout the season and they showcased batting masterclass in the match against MI.

Shashank Singh smashed 41 runs off 25 balls, with 2 fours and 3 sixes, On the other hand, Ashutosh Sharma tried to take the game deep and hit a magnificent half-century. He eventually got out in the 18th over for 28-ball 61 and Punjab Kings fell short of the win.

What was the point of sending Sam Curran to open? - Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh was left fuming after the defeat of Punjab Kings and he was particularly left disappointed with the PBKS batting line-up for the Mumbai Indians clash. The former India off-spinner slammed PBKS management for promoting Sam Curran to open and Liam Livingstone to the No.4 position.

"What was the point of sending Sam Curran to open? Prabhsimran got out while trying to pull. I can understand that both players got out on not-so-dangerous deliveries. Then the delivery that got Rilee Rossouw out was sensational. But then you sent Livingstone as a batter who plays the role of finisher and goes on No. 6 because he plays the role of finisher," Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

Harbhajan Singh further acknowledged the performances of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, saying that the duo have been in red-hot form and they helped PBKS avoid an embarrassing defeat. He questioned the PBKS for promoting the England stars, but not allowing Shashank and Ashutosh to bat up the order despite being in good form.

"We have to appreciate Shashank and Ashutosh. I want to understand how this management works. They send Livingstone up in the batting order and the players who are in form, Shashank are sent afterwards. You sent Harpreet Bhatia ahead of him. If you have brought him, then you should have waited. Shashank is in good form he has already produced match-winning performances.

"If Shashank and Ashutosh were not there PBKS would have fallen before 100. Ashutosh is in form and he should be promoted to the batting order. You should give youngsters an opportunity," he added.

Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly set to announce the head coaches for Pakistan's red and white-ball teams by the end of the ongoing month.

Pakistan do not have a head coach since Grant Bradburn stepped down from the post after the team's dismal performance in the ODI World Cup last year. During the tour of Australia and New Zealand, former allrounder Mohammad Hafeez served as the interim coach.

The new PCB committee under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi was expected to announce the head coaches before the start of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. However, PCB will take some more time before finalizing the names.

Gary Kirsten, Jason Gillespie in the fray:

As per reports, former India head coach Gary Kirsten and former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie have applied for the post. The PCB has also received received applications from a couple of other reputed coaches earlier this month. A PCB official has said that while the board is interested in Kirsten and Gillespie, the new applicants are also in contention.

"The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the long-term appointments of coaches will be done through a due process and all commitments would be met by the board," the source told PTI.

The PCB is also making sure to follow due process in appointing coaches. The last time it followed the process was in 2019 when Misbah-ul-Haq was named as the head coach and chief selector. Since then, all appointments have either been made on a consultancy or interim basis.

"Even in Kirsten and Gillespie’s case though, the board has held direct negotiations with them, and they remain top candidates to be appointed head coaches, (but) they were also told to apply through due process by the deadline," the source said.

"Even Azhar Mahmood has to go through the process, and currently, he was named head coach for the New Zealand series on a consultancy basis," the source added.

Pakistan will be hoping that the coaches are finalized soon and they start their final preparations for this year's T20 World Cup. The Men in Green have performed poorly in recent months and would be desperate to do well in the marquee event, scheduled to be played in June this year. Pakistan were the runners-up in the last edition of the T20 World Cup and will be eyeing the title this year.

Tom Moody and Suryakumar Yadav

Former Australia cricketer turned expert analyst Tom Moody feels that Mumbai Indians top-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav should not rush to gain full fitness upon his return to the cricket field. Suryakumar was the missing link in the MI team, which is looking totally different from what we saw early on in the season without the right-hand batsman. Last night against the Punjab Kings, he played out a knock of 78 runs which eventually helped his team win by 9 runs in Mullanpur.

It was Suryakumar Yadav's second fifty+ score of the season and first half-century since scoring 52 runs during MI's win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 11th April. Much like Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar, too, is staging his return to competitive cricket through IPL 2024. The 33-year-old had to deal with two different issues at once - a knee injury as well as a disease called Sports Hernia, which is a bit common in a sportsperson's life.

Why Suryakumar Yadav was out of action for more than 3 months?

Back in December 2023, Suryakumar Yadav was captaining the Indian team in the first phase of the South African tour which included 3 T20Is-ODIs and a 2-match Test series. In Hardik Pandya's absence, Surya was captaining the Men in Blue. In the series concluding T20I at Johannesburg, after scoring his 4th century in the shortest format, SKY sustained a knee injury which ruled him out for the ODI series, and he was also sent back home.

While he was recovering from the knee surgery, Surya was diagnosed with a Sports Hernia that further hindered his progress, keeping him away from attaining full fitness. But a few weeks ago, the NCA gave him the green light to go on and feature in IPL and he made his return through the clash against Delhi Capitals at Wankhede where Mumbai claimed their opening win of the season.

But Suryakumar Yadav was out for a duck in that match and he made amends in the following match against RCB by scoring 52 runs before getting out for a duck again in MI's loss against CSK. And last night against the Punjab Kings, Surya smashed 73 off 53 balls at a 140+ strike rate and his knock was very important behind Mumbai's total of 192.

What did Tom Moody say about SKY?

While speaking to Star Sports in the post-match analysis of Punjab versus Mumbai, Tom Moody claimed that Suryakumar Yadav should be acting like a turtle at the moment. He said this in the context of Surya getting back to full fitness, something he should not be rushing at all. Moody stated that he should be able to spend all 40 overs in the pitch and that he should also have the T20 World Cup 2024 in mind.

"Yeah it's important that he slowly works back into full fitness, he needs to be playing for the whole 40 overs and that would be great. Not that he bowls or anything but for his own peace of mind and fitness for the preparation for what is beyond the IPL," Moody said via Star Sports.

Sanjay Manjrekar, Rinku Singh

While the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) is currently underway, there is absolutely no denying that the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup is fast becoming the talk of the town.

The Indian cricket fraternity has been busy discussing the potential inclusions in Team India's squad for the marquee event, scheduled to take place in June this year. The T20 World Cup will get underway on June 1, just five days after the IPL 2024 ends on May 26.

Many believe that the ongoing IPL 2024 will play a key role in a player's inclusion in the India squad. While a few big names are automatic selections, a number of places are still up for grabs. One of them is the finisher's spot in the team. In recent months, Rinku Singh was India's designated finisher in the T20 format and has done a brilliant job so far.

Rinku Singh earned his maiden India call-up last year after impressing in IPL 2023. He had scored 474 runs in 14 games at an average of 59.25 and a strike-rate of almost 150. The southpaw had also famously hit Yash Dayal for five sixes in a row when Kolkata Knight Riders needed an improbable 28 runs on the last five balls.

Sanjay Manjrekar on Rinku Singh's place in the India squad:

Unlike the last IPL, Rinku Singh has not really managed to make an impact in the ongoing IPL as he has hardly got any chance to bat. In six games so far, he has faced only 51 deliveries and has scored 83 runs. With the KKR star hardly getting any chance this season, many believe that it could hamper his chances of selection in the T20 World Cup squad.

While only time will reveal Rinku Singh's fate, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has said that the batsman should be "walking into" the Indian team. The former cricket-turned-commentator praised Rinku for his consistency and range as he urged the selectors to include him in the World Cup squad.

"Because he's not getting many opportunities, I hope selectors won't forget about Rinku Singh," Manjrekar told Firstpost.

"He's a straight walk-in into the Indian team. Every time he has got the opportunity, you've seen how good he can be, in the sense of his consistency and the range that he has. He's somebody who I like, apart from the core of the Indian team, apart from the big names we are thinking about," said Manjrekar.

So far, Rinku has played 15 T20Is for Team India and has remained unbeaten in seven of them. In those 15 games, he has scored 356 runs at an average of almost 90 and a strike-rate of more than 175.

LSG vs CSK Impact Players

In the 34th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024), KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with each other on Friday, April 19 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) headed into the clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on the back of a defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 28th match of the Indian Premier League 2024.

LSG played an away fixture against the Shreyas Iyer-led side at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 14 and a poor all-round performance in the match led to their defeat by 8 wickets with 26 balls remaining. They were poor with the bat as they posted 161/7 board and while defending the target, the LSG bowlers were unsuccessful against the dangerous Phil Salt, who smashed sensational 89 runs to steer his team to an amazing victory at home.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), meanwhile, entered the LSG clash with a brilliant win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 29th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 14.

CSK were superb with the bat as they posted 206/4 on the board, riding on the half-centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube. Defending the target, Chennai Super Kings had to deal with the onslaught of Rohit Sharma, who smashed the bowlers and hit a terrific ton. However, Rohit Sharma's performance was outclassed by CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana as he picked up 4 crucial wickets to restrict MI to 186/6 to help his team win by 20 runs.

Who are the impact players nominated by LSG and CSK for game 34 of IPL 2024?

Lucknow Super Giants won the toss and opted to field first in the match. Speaking at the toss, KL Rahul said that the surface for the match looks good so they wanted to know what score they were chasing. KL Rahul also spoke about LSG's match against KKR and revealed that Shamar Joseph has been replaced by Matt Henry.

"We'll bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, dew hasn;t been a big factor. Hopefully it stays good for 40 overs. We would like to know what we are chasing. There weren't any blunders we made. Last game against KKR was a big defeat. Still pretty relaxed. I know it's halfway mark. As a leadership group, if we panic it spreads. That's not what I like to be. Great support staff. We are trying to keep as relaxed as possible. The pitches have been relaid here. Each time you play, it can be different. Just one change. Joseph is out, Matt Henry comes in," KL Rahul elaborated.

The Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad at the toss said that they were looking forward to bowling first in the match and revealed about two changes to the line-up.

"We would have bowled first. We batted first in the last game and batted well. (Win against MI) A good confidence-booster. Going there and defending is a big boost for us. We don't want to get complacent. We are trying to be as consistent as possible. Just a bit lucky (on his batting), unlucky dismissal in the first two matches. Good to be back, good to be going. Everyone is confident. Two changes. Mo comes in for Mitchell, Deepak comes in for Shardul," Ruturaj Gaikwad said.

LSG vs CSK: List of Impact Players:

LSG: Arshad Khan, Yudhvir Singh Charak, Arshin Kulkarni, Krishnappa Gowtham, Manimaran Siddharth

CSK: Sameer Rizvi, Shardul Thakur, Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Mitchell Santner

LSG vs CSK: Playing XIs of both teams:

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Ruturaj Gaikwad(c), Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni(w), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana

Lucknow Super Giants (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul(w/c), Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, Matt Henry, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan, Yash Thakur

Rachin Ravindra, Mohsin Khan

Rachin Ravindra once again failed to score big in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 as he was dismissed cheaply in the ongoing game between Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings in Lucknow.

The New Zealand star earned his maiden IPL contract from Chennai Super Kings for the ongoing season. With his compatriot Devon Conway sidelined with an injury, Rachin Ravindra got the chance to open the innings for CSK from the very first game.

He started his campaign in IPL 2024 on a promising note by playing quickfire knocks of 37 and 46 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans respectively. However, he has not really managed to impress with the bat since then. Those two knocks were followed by knocks of 2, 12, 15 and 21.

And in the ongoing game against Lucknow Super Giants, Rachin Ravindra could not even open his account as Mohsin Khan dismissed him for a golden duck with a beauty. The left-handed batsman was on the strike for the first ball of the second over bowled by Mohsin Khan.

The LSG pacer bowled a full-length delivery that was angled in and came back in at the last moment. Rachin Ravindra wanted to drive the ball but was beaten on all ends due to the last-moment movement of the ball. The ball went on to crash into the stumps.

Talking about the game, CSK were on 13 for 1 in the third over at the time of writing this report. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane were batting in the middle for the reigning champions. Earlier, LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first.

"We'll bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, dew hasn't been a big factor. Hopefully it stays good for 40 overs. We would like to know what we are chasing. There weren't any blunders we made. Last game against KKR was a big defeat. Still pretty relaxed. I know it's halfway mark. As a leadership group, if we panic it spreads. That's not what I like to be. Great support staff," said Rahul.

Krunal Pandya, Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane, on Friday (April 19), once again failed to capitalise on a start as he was dismissed for 36 in the ongoing game between Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow.

For the second game in a row, Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings for Chennai Super Kings. He was promoted as to open the innings for the first time last week when Chennai Super Kings locked horns against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Ajinkya Rahane, however, failed to get going at his home ground and was out for just five runs.

In the ongoing game, however, he got the start and was looking in good touch before a brilliant delivery from Krunal Pandya ended his stay. The right-handed batsman was up against the LSG allrounder in the ninth over and was dismissed by him on the very first ball.

It was a length delivery from Krunal and Ajinkya Rahane wanted to play it across the line. He missed the ball completely and was clean-bowled. The ball beat the inside edge before crashing into the leg stump. The veteran batsman departed after scoring 36 runs off 24 balls with the help of five fours and one six.

Ajinkya Rahane was the third CSK wicket to fall in the game. At the time of writing this report, CSK were on 74 for 3 after nine overs with Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja batting in the middle. Before Rahane, CSK had lost the wickets of Rachin Ravindra and their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad as well.

After KL Rahul opted to bowl first, Mohsin Khan justified his decision by castling Rachin for a golden duck in the second over. Gaikwad and Rahane then added 29 runs for the second wicket before Yash Thakur broke the stand by dismissing the former for 17.

CSK have won their last two games and will be eyeing another win to extend their winning run. On the other hand, LSG will be desperate for a win tonight to end their two-match losing streak.
