KL Rahul might be currently playing and captaining for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL 2024, but he has a special place in his heart for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Amid the ongoing IPL 2024 glitz, Rahul opened up about the former RCB skipper Virat Kohli's reaction upon learning about his signing with RCB for the first time during a conversation with the star off-spinner R Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Rahul, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Thursday (April 18), reflected on his remarkable journey when he was signed by the RCB for the 2013 season of the lucrative league.

The young Indian wicketkeeper-batter made his debut for the star-studded RCB team against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2013, and it was a huge moment for him.

At just 20 years old, donning the RCB jersey was a dream come true for Rahul, and it was a significant milestone in his career, as it changed everything for him. Notably, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper had two separate stints with RCB in the IPL—first in 2013 and second in 2016.

KL Rahul told R Ashwin on his YouTube Channel: “Virat was there (ITC Gardenia), coach Ray Jennings and other support staff were also there and Virat only said, 'Would you want to sign this contract and play for RCB?' I was like, 'Are you kidding? It was always my dream.' And then he said 'I'm just kidding. It's not an option, just sign this contract.' I signed and Virat said 'It's gonna be a crazy ride. You're going to enjoy a lot in the next couple of months’.”

Rahul further said that his learnings during his time at RCB over those two months were invaluable. He noted that with the growth and development he experienced during that short period at the RCB, it would have taken 7-8 seasons of playing the Ranji Trophy alone to learn that.

The 32-year-old right-hander said that he gained so much knowledge and experience in those two months in the IPL with the RCB, and everything was fast-forwarded. The LSG skipper also revealed that he would have loved to finish his IPL career at RCB because he started his IPL journey with them.

Rahul signed off by saying, “I would have also loved to play for Bangalore. I had started there; I would have liked to finish there and that was there in my head. But the beauty of IPL is that you get to go into different teams with different players.”

Ashutosh's incredible knock of 61 runs off just 28 balls rescued Punjab from a precarious position of 111 for 7 and gave them a strong chance of securing a memorable win.

Meanwhile, Zaheer Khan praised Ashutosh for his focused mindset and exceptional execution, especially in anticipating Bumrah's delivery and executing the sweep shot perfectly.

Zaheer Khan was quoted as saying by India Today: “But tonight looked like Ashutosh was in the zone and that shot, which he played off Bumrah. No one, I mean, no one we've seen can play that kind of sweep shot to Bumrah, anticipating that yorker, going ahead and then yet managing.”

The former Indian pacer also lauded Shashank Singh for his impressive batting performance, scoring 41 runs off 25 balls against the Mumbai Indians (MI). Shashank's innings studded with 2 fours and 3 sixes, which was significant as he entered the crease with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) struggling at 14/4.

Notably, Shashank has so far amassed 187 runs at an impressive average of 62.33 and a strike rate of 179.81 in his 7 appearances, while Ashutosh has 156 runs to his name in 4 matches, striking at 205.26.

Zaheer signed off by saying, “Well, I mean four down. Who would have given them any chance of getting back in this game? But these two guys, it's just unbelievable stuff. And they've already secured those two points for Punjab. Earlier, when both of these guys batted together. Shashank, obviously that time was a hero.”

Are the Mumbai Indians fixing decisions with the 3rd Umpire? If not, then one should have definitely watched the game between MI and the Punjab Kings last night at the Maharaja Yadavindra International Stadium in Mullanpur.

Several decisions that weren't supposed to go in Mumbai's favor, actually went their way and questions are now being raised upon the decision-making of 3rd Umpires. So much so that former IPL-winning head coach Tom Moody has suggested having specialist 3rd Umpires.

Tom Moody was among those expert pundits, who were keeping a close eye on the contest between two bottom-half teams, Mumbai and Punjab. The first incident that should be mentioned is the DRS appeal from Rohit Sharma, early on in the 2nd innings of the match.

Harshal Patel had bowled a fuller length delivery to Rohit which went and struck straight into the latter's backfoot. The first impression showed that it was a very close call and that Rohit was going to get out.

However, as the former MI captain took the DRS, after a few minutes of pause for unknown reasons, the ball tracking showed something that totally baffled all of us.

Harshal Patel's straighter delivery didn't really move much but the Hawkeye displayed that the ball was moving away from Rohit towards fine leg and missed the leg-stump on its way. That gave Rohit a lifeline but then it also raises questions about the credibility of the DRS and the 3rd Umpire.

What intrigued Tom Moody to ask for specialist 3rd Umpires?

There were another 2 controversies that took place last night and intrigued Tom Moody to have specialist 3rd Umpires. The first controversy took place in the final ball of the 15th over bowled by Punjab's Arshdeep Singh.

The left-arm pacer had bowled an outside off-stump delivery to which, opposing batter Suryakumar Yadav failed to reach out in time but the on-field umpire had not given it wide.

Meanwhile, in the MI dugout, Mark Boucher, Kieron Pollard, and Tim David were seen watching the replay of the ball and then asked Surya to go for the review.

Upon noticing it, Punjab captain Sam Curran went to the umpire and pointed out that MI batters were getting signals from the dugout and that it was absolutely unfair. However, the umpire didn't do anything and last night's 3rd umpire Nitin Menon firmly gave it a wide.

Then in the 19th over, a wide yorker from Sam Curran, which actually went under on-strike batter Tim David's bat, was given wide after the latter had taken a review against the on-field umpire's decision.

The ruling says that a ball will not be given wide if it is within a batsman's reach and the ball, which was given wide after DRS, was actually pretty much within David's reach. That decision triggered quite a lot of us and Tom Moody became the first to express his views.

"It’s time we considered having specialist 3rd umpires, too many questionable decisions are being made. Some umpires are better suited on the field, the 3rd umpire requires experience and a certain skill set." - Tom Moody wrote via X (formerly Twitter).

MI go 7th in IPL table

Meanwhile, after so many controversies, the Mumbai Indians won the game by 6 runs and went 7th in the league table after playing half of their matches.

They are in a must-win situation from now on as a loss can deplete their chances of reaching the playoffs in IPL 2024. Their next away match will be against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals on April 22nd.

Former Indian pacer and Delhi Capitals captain Zaheer Khan feels that current DC skipper Rishabh Pant is the answer to Indian team management's search for a solid middle-order batsman.

In just a few months, most of the foreign players and centrally contracted homegrown players will be on display for their respective countries in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies from June. And for that reason, Rahul Dravid and Ajit Agarkar are keeping a close eye on the tournament.

The duo might have handpicked and noted down a few uncapped players, who can book their flights to the USA and West Indies. While the core team is set and reports suggested that 10 players from the 15-man squad are already locked in, the only spot where team India might lack is the middle-order.

There is no shortage of firepower in the top-order but India does need a reliable batter in the middle and for that, there are a few contenders.

Lucknow Super Giants' uncapped Indian express fast bowler Mayank Yadav's return date for IPL 2024 following a sensational first few matches, is still unknown.

Ahead of the North-Indian outfit's clash against reigning champions Chennai Super Kings later tonight, LSG's South African assistant coach Lance Klusener remained tight-lipped about Mayank's fitness and possible comeback later tonight.
