LPL

The Lanka Premier League (LPL), on Wednesday (May 22), announced the termination of Dambulla Thunders from the league, effective immediately.

The LPL has taken a big step after Dambulla Thunders' owner Tamim Rahman was arrested by the officials in Sri Lanka over his alleged involvement in match-fixing and betting. As per media reports, he was arrested under the 2019 Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which relates to corruption in sports.

He was arrested by the immigration officials at the airport in Colombo prior to boarding the flight. Rahman, who is a British citizen of Bangladeshi origin, is the CEO of the Imperial Sports Group which bought the Dambulla-based franchise in April this year.

"The Lanka Premier League (LPL) announces the termination of the Dambulla Thunders franchise, effective immediately. This decision follows recent developments concerning the franchise’s ownership and the legal issues faced by Tamim Rahman, Founder of Imperial Sports Group," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement.

While the specifics of the charges against Mr. Rahman remain unclear, the integrity and smooth functioning of the Lanka Premier League are of utmost importance. This termination aims to uphold the values and reputation of the LPL, ensuring that all participants adhere to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship," it added.

LPL to go ahead as scheduled even after Dambulla Thunders' termination:

The termination of Dambulla Thunders won't affect the scheduling of the fifth edition of the LPL. Galle Marvels and Dambulla Thunders are the two new teams that were added by the LPL ahead of the forthcoming season. An LPL official has said that the organizers will ensure that Dambulla Thunders participate in the tournament even if they fail to find new owners.

"The LPL will go ahead as scheduled, we will run the side if we can't find an owner in time for the LPL. In the past, we managed two sides and we are ready to take a financial hit," an LPL official told Cricbuzz.

The Dambulla-based outfit has signed up players such as Mustafizur Rahman, Dilshan Madushanka, Nuwan Thushara, Akila Dananjaya, Danushka Gunathilaka, Nuwan Pradeep, Ibrahim Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Karim Janat and Iftikhar Ahmed for the forthcoming LPL edition.

A total of five teams will be participating in LPL 2024, scheduled to be played from July 1 to 21. Apart from Dambulla and Galle, B-Love Kandy, Colombo Strikers, and Jaffna Kings will also participate in the tournament.

Watch as Lockie Ferguson clean bowls Tom Kohler-Cadmore

Lockie Ferguson, on Wednesday (May 22), came up with an absolute gem of a delivery to castle Tom Kohler-Cadmore in the ongoing Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Asked to bat first, RCB finished their innings on a competitive total of 172 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Rajat Patidar top-scored for RCB, scoring 34 while Virat Kohli (33) and Mahipal Lomror (32) also played crucial knocks. For RR, Avesh Khan picked up three wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin claimed two wickets.

In reply, RR made a good start with the bat. With Jos Buttler not available anymore, Tom Kohler-Cadmore came out to open the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal. The duo did not let RCB take any wickets in the first five overs before Lockie Ferguson was introduced into the attack.

And the New Zealand pacer made an instant impact by castling Tom Kohler-Cadmore to give RCB the much-needed first breakthrough. On the third ball of the sixth over, the right-arm pacer clean bowled the RR opener with a stunning yorker. It was a slower yorker from Ferguson and Kohler-Cadmore was completely outfoxed by it. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 20 runs off 15 balls.

Talking about the game, RR were on 85 for 2 at the end of the tenth over. In the tenth over, Cameron Green dismissed Jaiswal for 45 to give RCB another crucial breakthrough. Captain Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag were batting in the middle for RR at the time of writing this report.

RR will be hoping that the in-form batters bat them to a strong position in the chase. The winner of the ongoing game will be playing in the second qualifier for a place in the final while the loser will be knocked out. The winner of the Eliminator will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second qualifier. Kolkata Knight Riders have already booked their place in the final.

Dinesh Karthik

The ongoing Eliminator of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 was marred by a massive controversy over Dinesh Karthik’s lbw call. The match between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is being played in Ahmedabad.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik walked out to bat in the 15th over and he didn’t have the kind of first ball he would’ve wanted. The right-hander was struck on the pads and was given out by the on-field umpire.

However, Dinesh Karthik after discussing with his partner went up for the DRS. The keeper-batter played across the line to the ball that was full and straight, bending in late and hitting the pads. However, the UltraEdge showed that there was a big spike but from the first look, it was hard to figure out if that was off-bat hitting pad or the inside edge.

However, after a few replays, it was visible that Dinesh Karthik’s bat hit the pad before the ball came and after that, there was a big spike. The third umpire, however, didn’t notice it and made a blunder, considering the spike as a ball hitting the bat.

However, there was a massive gap between bat and ball and after that third umpire termed it not out, the entire Rajasthan Royals team went berserk. Even head coach Kumar Sangakkara moved from his dugout to have a chat with the fourth umpire.

Here’s the video of the dismissal:

Out or Not Out - what do you think? 👀#RRvRCB #IPLonJioCinema #TATAIPL #TATAIPLPlayoffs pic.twitter.com/o8Zn0TAUJJ

— JioCinema (@JioCinema) May 22, 2024

The third umpire’s decision didn’t go well with many as it even made commentators on-air think about the thought process behind the dismissal. Sunil Gavaskar was sure that the bat hit the pad and said: "The bat has hit the pad, the bat has not hit the ball".

Kevin Pietersen also claimed that the third umpire didn’t get his decision right and stated: "I don't think the umpire has got the decision right".

Irfan Pathan, who was also doing commentary agreed on the fact that the third umpire didn’t make the correct decision. He said: "The ball does not touch the bat, this was not the right decision by the third Umpire".

Fans on Twitter react as third umpire makes wrong decision on Dinesh Karthik’s lbw

As the third umpire made a poor call on Dinesh Karthik’s lbw in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 game, fans on X were left angry. They lashed out at the third umpire for the poor call and also speculated about match-fixing. Here are some of the reactions:

There’s a reason why technology has been introduced in cricket - to make the right call. And I wonder why the third umpire is always in a hurry . That was clearly bat hitting the pad first . Was plumb infront IMO. #RRVSRCB

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Rajasthan Royals (RR) opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal played a decent knock for his team in the ongoing game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The eliminator of the tournament is underway at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Chasing the target of 173 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal took his team off to a great start with the bat. He came out all guns blazing and played positive innings, putting Royal Challengers Bengaluru under pressure right from the start at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Yashasvi Jaiswal played some crisp shots in their innings and made sure that gets runs quickly in the powerplay. The left-hander looked in great touch and was looking all set for a big knock and till the time he was at the crease, Rajasthan Royals were in complete control.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, couldn't carry on after the start he got as he perished at the crucial juncture of the game at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He fell to Cameron Green in the 10th over as Rajasthan Royals lost the second wicket.

Cameron Green bowled a length ball onto the middle stump, Yashasvi Jaiswal shuffled away to the ramp but he missed the shot and the ball grazed his glove on the way to the keeper as the batter had to take the long walk to the pavilion at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.

However, what caught the attention of many was Yashasvi Jaiswal's antics after getting out. As he was walking back, the Rajasthan Royals batter slammed his bat onto the ground in frustration before reaching the dugout. He didn't stop there as after that he punched the side railing as he walked up the stairs.

Here's the video:

— Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka (@Hanji_CricDekho) May 22, 2024

Yashasvi Jaiswal played a valiant innings of 45 runs off 30 balls for his team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He batted with a strike rate of 150 and also hit 8 fours in his innings, giving a great start to his team.

RCB vs RR: I think it's par-minus - Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, who returned with the figures of 2/19 for Rajasthan Royals with the ball, talked about his performance, saying that it has been a season of two halves for him. He also talked about the conditions, saying that there's a dew and opposition has posted below-par total. He elaborated:

"It's been a tournament of two halves for me. First half of the tournament, I was struggling coming from the Test series with injuries. Last few games I feel I am bowling really well. I texted Virat saying come on let's fight it one more time (smiles). Dew has come on nicely. The IPL committee has done well overall in the tournament to manage the dew.

"(On RR's recent poor batting efforts) Got to reset button. Also got to look at the pitches we played on in those games. Not hiding behind the fact that we didn't bat well in the last few games but it's just about hitting the reset button, going out and enjoying in the middle. (On the total) I think it's par-minus," he concluded.

Virat Kohli, Cameron Green

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have clawed their way back into the ongoing Eliminator against Rajasthan Royals thanks to a stunning fielding effort from Virat Kohli at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The former India skipper and Cameron Green combined to run out Dhruv Jurel cheaply. Chasing 173 runs, RR were off to a brilliant start and were comfortably placed at 81 for 1 in the tenth over before Green dismissed a well-set Yashasvi Jaiswal for 45 to give his side a much-needed breakthrough.

Five runs later, Karn Sharma picked up the huge wicket of Sanju Samson to reduce RR to 86 for 3. Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel then took the score past the 100-run mark. Both the batters were looking settled and had the innings in control before Virat Kohli's heroics helped RCB turn the game on its head.

On the first ball of the 14th over, Virat Kohli's efforts helped RCB get rid of Jurel and end his 26-run stand with Parag. The wicketkeeper-batsman was run out while trying to complete the second run. Not many would have anticipated a run-out but anything is possible when Virat Kohli is on the field and he showed it once again.

The former RCB skipper was standing at deep square leg when Parag pulled Green's delivery towards his left. Kohli sprinted to collect the ball and fired a bullet throw at the non-striker's end where Green did well to take the bails off in a flash before Jurel could get back inside the crease safely. Jurel was seemingly not expecting the throw at his end from Kohli and was a bit casual in his running and eventually paid the price for it.

Watch as Virat Kohli and Cameron Green combine to run out Dhruv Jurel:

Talking about the game, RR were on 143 for 4 at the end of the 16th over at the time of writing this report. They need 30 more runs in the last four overs to book a place in the second qualifier.

Watch: Mohammed Siraj castles Riyan Parag as latter tries to play a big shot

Mohammed Siraj, on Wednesday (May 22), clean bowled Riyan Parag to stop him from taking Rajasthan Royals over the line in the Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The right-handed batsman walked out to bat in the tenth over and stood firm at one end as RR lost the wickets of their captain Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel in quick succession. RR were reeling at 112 for 4 in the 14th over at one stage before Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer steadied the ship.

The duo took the score past the 150-run mark and it looked like they would take RR home. However, Mohammed Siraj broke the stand in the 18th over by castling Parag. On the second ball of the over, the right-arm pacer bowled a pitched-up delivery and Parag went for a big heave across the line. However, he failed to make any contact with the ball and the ball went on to crash into the stumps.

Parag departed after scoring 36 runs off 26 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes. He also shared a crucial 45-run stand with Hetmyer for the fifth wicket.

Talking about the game, RR beat RCB by four wickets to qualify for the second qualifier and knocked out the latter from IPL 2024. Set a target of 173 runs, RR crossed the finishing line in 19 overs. RR will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second qualifier for a place in the final. Kolkata Knight Riders have already booked their place in the title decider.

The defeat has brought an end to RCB's stunning six-match winning run in the competition. RCB's chances of making it to the playoffs looked done and dusted after they lost seven of their first eight games. However, they won six games in a row to storm into the playoffs.

Watch as Mohammed Siraj clean bowls Riyan Parag:

Faf du Plessis and Shimron Hetmyer

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis gave his best for his team in the game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The Eliminator between the teams took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (22nd May).

Faf du Plessis didn't have a great night with the bat against Rajasthan Royals but he made sure that he gave his best on the field. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper came up with a brilliant effort during the fag end of the game that almost tilted the game in his team's favour.

Rajasthan Royals batter Shimron Hetmyer was going great guns with the bat in the end and put Royal Challengers Bengaluru on the backfoot. However, Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets in the single over including the scalp of the Carribean batter to bring his team back in the game.

But the credit for that wicket goes to Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Faf du Plessis, who took a brilliant catch. Mohammed Siraj bowled a full delivery angling across to the middle and leg to which the batter went for a flick and got a leading edge.

The ball flew up and Faf du Plessis, who was the covers, ran back. He overran it but adjusted well as the ball came down. He kept his eye on the ball and took a magical catch to bring his team back into the game at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Shimron Hetmyer made a solid impact on the game and with his cameo changed the game in his team's favour. The Caribbean batter, who was returning from the injury, played an inning of 26 runs off just 14 balls. He batted with a strike rate of over 185 and slammed 3 fours and 1 six in his innings.

However, after he got out, Rovman Powell played a magnificent innings. The West Indies skipper played a match-winning innings of unbeaten 16 runs off 8 balls. He slammed two fours and one six in the 19th over to Lockie Ferguson and won the game for his team by 4 wickets.

It was a situation where you had to put the bat to the ball - Rovman Powell

After the game, Rovman Powell talked about his innings and stated that it wasn't a difficult situation but that he needed to put bat to ball. He also talked about his fielding effort and taking 4 catches, saying that he wanted to put his body on the line. He stated:

"It (situation) wasn't that difficult. It was a situation where you had to put bat to ball, thankfully i minimized the pressure. I wanted to tell him to be positive rather than look for singles and unfortunately, he got out. (On his batting position) If it was up to me I would take it a little bit earlier. Having said that we have quality batters and you have to accept the role and I am looking forward to contribute more in this role.

"Sometimes you need things like these (Four catches). First catch (off Faf) was the one that let me take four catches. If I had put that down, it would be a haan, tough day in the field kind of situation. When you have good players like Faf and Virat you want those half chances to come to you. You put the body on the line. We have been playing good cricket overall this season, last few games we messed up. Guys are looking forward to playing in Chennai,
" he concluded.
