Babar Azam and Basit Ali

Babar Azam and Basit Ali (Credits: X)

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has revealed the real reason why PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi paused the selection committee from picking the T20 World Cup squad.

PCB just yesterday (May 25) announced the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. But so much wait for the squad got fans upset on social media with many former Pakistan cricketers also criticizing the process. Basit Ali, who has remained a selector himself in the past, is also among those who have questioned the PCB.

He apparently knows the exact reason behind Mohsin Naqvi getting annoyed with the 7-member selection panel and claimed that it has a connection with Babar Azam.

What did Basit Ali say?

While speaking on his latest YouTube video, Basit Ali dropped a bombshell by revealing that Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has a disagreement with the selectors. While Babar is on one page, the selectors are on the other. "Babar Azam is on one page and other selectors on the other," Ali said on his YT video.

Basit Ali would then claim that 2 out of the 7 selectors - Mohammed Yousuf and Wahab Riaz are traveling with the team and that they might not have landed with the other 5 selectors. According to Ali, the selection committee is not in sync and is not following the right process in the system.

He then stated that Naqvi intervened because he had found no details about their progress.

"I'll give you the entire story why the three met together. Two selectors are moving with the team - Mohammed Yousuf and Wahab Riaz. The others were not spoken to. They told the Chairman, and then he vetoed and asked what was happening and where are the minutes of the meet," Ali added.

Basit Ali questions the credibility of the selectors

Basit Ali then directly questioned the credibility of the selectors when he said that they didn't follow the process he used to do when he was in the same role. Ali then spoke about the disagreements that selectors have while forming a team. He called it a very normal thing as there are often times when people have different opinions.

But even in that case, the selectors back then used to write their views down on paper and then present it to everyone. Howver, this precise process is not followed in the current selection panel with Basit Ali condemning it as well.

"When a team is formed, not everyone is on the same page. Everyone has their different opinions. So then they give their views in writing on a page stating their views. All that does not happen here. I was a chief selector, so I can tell," Basit Ali concluded.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer [PC: X]

Shreyas Iyer has finally opened up on the back issue that forced him to miss Ranji Trophy games earlier this season and it cost him really big. The right-handed batsman was left out of the BCCI's central contract list for the 2024-25 season for not playing red-ball cricket.

There was also a miscommunication over his back issue. After the second Test against England, the right-handed batsman had expressed discomfort in his back when playing long innings. However, the National Cricket Academy cleared him of any injury or problem. He was subsequently dropped from the Test team after failing to do well in the first two Tests.

While he was expected to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, he eventually decided against it due to the same back issue. As per media reports, he was dealing with back spasms. Later, he attended Kolkata Knight Riders' pre-season camp while deciding against playing for Mumbai. Later, he played for Mumbai in the semifinal but it was not enough as he lost his central contract.

As per media reports, the BCCI officials were not happy with Shreyas Iyer's decision to attend the KKR camp instead of playing for Mumbai. The middle-order batsman had not said anything about the back issue at that time but opened up on it while addressing the media ahead of the IPL 2024 final against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The KKR captain said that he was facing issues since the end of the ODI World Cup and also pointed out that he did not get the support as no one agreed with him.

"I was struggling after the World Cup in the longer format. When I raised my concerns, no one agreed to it. But at the same time, the competition is with myself. When I came, the IPL was approaching. All I wanted to see to it that I put in my best effort forward and whatever planning and strategizing we did before it was basically if we execute it to the best of our abilities we would have been in a great spot and that is where we are right now. And the transformation from red ball to white-ball is kind of difficult as a batter and also as a bowler I feel. Yeah it was kind of difficult at the start but once you get used to it I think you pick up the pace and match on with other players."

Shreyas Iyer eyes maiden IPL title:

After the contract snub, Shreyas Iyer has enjoyed a very successful season in the ongoing IPL. He is now just one win away from winning his maiden IPL title. The Mumbai star has led KKR brilliantly this season and will be looking to guide them to another win over SRH in the final on Sunday (May 26). With the bat, he has scored 345 runs in 14 games with the help of two half-centuries.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer has credited mentor Gautam Gambhir for the team's success in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Shreyas Iyer praised Gautam Gambhir for his strategic support in the tournament, highlighting his title victories as captain in the IPL.

The Kolkata Knight Riders appointed Gautam Gambhir as their mentor ahead of the IPL 2024. Gambhir played a significant role in the Knight Riders finishing as table-toppers with nine wins out of 14 games after the league stage. Notably, the Kolkata team failed to advance to the playoffs in the last two editions.

The Shreyas Iyer-led team continued their dominance in the playoff stage. The KKR team defeated SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in "Qualifier 1" at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 21. They advanced to the final match for the fourth time in the history of the tournament.

The Kolkata Knight Riders won two titles in the 2012 and 2014 seasons. It is worth mentioning that Gautam Gambhir was the captain during those winning campaigns. The team last reached the final match during the 2021 edition. However, they failed to secure the title against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The Hype Is Created By You - Shreyas Iyer

Speaking ahead of the final match against the Pat Cummins-led team, Shreyas Iyer hoped that they would continue the momentum in the final as well to clinch their third IPL title. Shreyas stated that Gautam Gambhir has immense knowledge and added that his strategy is spot on.

"The hype is created by you guys. Where I stand is totally upon you. Gautam Bhai has immense knowledge and has won two titles and his strategy is spot on. He adds a lot of cream. Hopefully, we will continue the momentum in the final as well," Shreyas told reporters.

After missing the 2023 season due to injury, Shreyas Iyer returned as KKR's captain for IPL 2024. The right-handed batter has scored 345 runs in 13 matches at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of 146.18. The middle-order batter is the third-highest run-getter for KKR in the ongoing tournament.

Was Struggling After The World Cup - Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer mentioned that he faced challenges with his form in the longer format after the World Cup. The 29-year-old batter stated that he aimed to perform at his best as the IPL approached.

"I was struggling after the World Cup in longer format. When I raised my concern nobody was agreeing to it. When IPL approached, I wanted to put my best foot forward. We wanted to execute our plans and we would have been in a great position and that is where we are now," Shreyas added.

Kolkata Knight Riders Predicted Playing XII: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer (c), Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, Mitchell Starc, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy, Nitish Rana

Shreyas Iyer {PC:X}

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer provided a massive update on the pitch for the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He stated that it would have a red soil surface and was hopeful of doing good.

Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad will be taking on each other in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The summit clash will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (26th May) and with the brand of cricket both the teams have played, it promises to be an enthralling game.

Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad played each other in the Qualifier 1 of the tournament at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad. It saw the Shreyas Iyer-led side winning the game by the massive margin of 8 wickets and dominating the Orange Army with both bat and ball.

The two teams will be up against each other in the final but at different venues in MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where the surface is completely different from what it was at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Chepauk pitch assists spinners more and it no doubt will see the low-scoring game.

Sunrisers Hyderabad would be high on confidence as they defeated Rajasthan Royals at the venue in the Qualifier 2. But the pitch for the final will be different and it will be the same pitch, where the game between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings was played and it was a spin-friendly track.

Shreyas Iyer talked about the pitch and stated it would be a different pitch from what it was in Qualifier 2. He added that whatever decision he takes or the Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins takes, will hopefully go in his side's favour. Speaking to reporters, he stated:

"It is a different pitch..going to be a red soil pitch. Not like the one on Qualifier II. Whatever decision we take, or Cummins takes, hopefully, goes in our favour."

His strategies have been spot on - Gautam Gambhir on Shreyas Iyer

Gautam Gambhir has changed the fortunes of the Kolkata Knight Riders in THE IPL 2024. He has been the mentor of the team and has helped the team reach the final of the tournament. He has earlier guided the team to the two titles as skipper and would be keen to win as a mentor as well.

Shreyas Iyer talked about the presence of Gautam Gambhir and stated that the mentor has immense knowledge of the game and his strategies have been spot on. He added:

"Gautam bhai has immense knowledge about the T20 game & his strategies have been spot on".

Kolkata Knight Riders have won two titles in the league while Sunrisers Hyderabad have won 1. It remains to be seen who will add another title to their kitty.

Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma bowled his full quota of overs in Qualifier 2 and also picked up two crucial wickets as SRH beat RR in the match to set up a date with KKR to play in the IPL 2024 final.

Abhishek Sharma dismissed Sanju Samson and RR Impact Player Shimron Hetmyer to turn the game in SRH's favor. He was given his full quota of overs by SRH skipper Pat Cummins as the move turned out to be a masterstroke. He and Shahbaz Ahmed culminated for five wickets to break the back of the RR chase.

After the match, Abhishek spoke about how former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh helped him improve his bowling skills. Abhishek is mentored by Yuvraj, who possesses similar skills that helped India lift the 2011 ODI World Cup at home. Yuvraj was later named the Player of the Tournament for his all-round efforts.

Yuvi Paaji Said I Can Be A Better Bowler Than Him: Abhishek Sharma

"Whenever I had conversation about bowling with Yuvi paaji, he always said I can be a better bowler than him," Abhishek said in a video on the IPL website after the match. That thing I always had in my mind. I think he will be happy as well that I could contribute with bowling" the youngster said about Yuvraj Singh.

The SRH batter also went on to speak about how his father who was also a left-arm spinner.

"I think my dad will be very happy because he was a left-arm spinner and he has been working really hard on my bowling. But somehow I knew that if I keep working on my bowling, I can do something for my team because I have that in myself, I would say. From junior cricket only, I have been bowling a lot and taking a few wickets" Abhishek added.

Sanju Samson won the toss and asked SRH to bat first. Heinrich Klaasen scored 50 off 34 balls and played a crucial role in the team finishing 175/9 in their 20 overs. Travis Head (34) and Rahul Tripathi (37) also played crucial knocks and helped the team get there.

RR lost wickets at regular intervals. However, the introduction of the two spinners changed the momentum of the game in SRH's favor and the move to sustain the two spinners proved to be a masterstroke. There was no dew which aided the spinners and the low-slow track at the Chepauk helped them turn the ball as well.

"The captain and coach told me depending on the situation we will use you, my role was to bat lower down the order and they said if we collapse we will send you. When I was batting, I felt that this wicket has something and the way Avesh and Sandeep bowled showed. I'm feeling proud at having got the Man of the Match in such a game, the atmosphere is quite relaxed in the camp. We will celebrate only after winning the final, tonight we will just relax," said Shahbaz Ahmed who was named the Man of the Match.

SRH will now play KKR in the IPL 2024 final on Sunday, May 26. This is the third IPL final for Sunrisers Hyderabad while the fourth for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chetshwar Pujara Sussex

India's Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara notched up his second century for Sussex in the ongoing County Championship Division Two on Saturday. He fabulously went past his century and is still unbeaten at the crease.

Middlesex won the toss and opted to bowl first. It is Pujara's century that has held the innings together. The batters above him got starts but could not continue to score the big knock.

Sussex opener Tom Haines (40) and Tom Clarke (32) added a 66-run opening stand. Once the stand was broken, Tom Alsop, the number three batter scored just 11 runs. Pujara walked out to bat at number four and in his own way grinded his innings.

He pulled a short delivery for a boundary to reach his 65th First-Class hundred and 2nd of this County season for Sussex. In the process, he got to a special landmark as he is now just behind Sachin Tendulkar Sunil Gavaskar, and Rahul Dravid in the list of most First-Class centuries for India. Sachin and Gavaskar have scored 81 each followed by Dravid on 68. Pujara is third on the list after completing his 65th First Class ton.

Sussex lost their fourth wicket at 165 and since then Pujara and skipper John Simpson have added over 220 runs and are still going strong.

With the IPL 2024 currently going on in India, Pujara has opted to play Country Cricket in England as he often does when the IPL is on. He will be back to playing Test cricket for India after the T20 World Cup 2024.

India will tour down under and play against Australia at the end of the year and Pujara would be valuable for India in that series if he is selected. By then, India will have a new head coach as Rahul Dravid's tenure is all set to end after the T20 World Cup. He has not opted to renew his contract saying that he needs time with his family.

Reports in Rev Sportz say that the BCCI is looking for a former Indian cricketer to replace Rahul Dravid as the next head coach of the side and Gautam Gambhir is on their wishlist. He is among the favorites to replace Dravid as the next head coach of the Indian cricket team. VVS Laxman is also on the radar.

Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer did not show any interest in the role with the Indian team saying that they are not ready for the long-term commitment at the moment. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah responded to it saying that the role of the head coach of the Indian Cricket team is a big responsibility as the team demands a lot of respect.

“When we talk about international cricket, no role is more prestigious than that of the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Team India commands the largest fan base globally, enjoying support that is truly unrivalled. Our rich history, passion for the game, make this one of the most lucrative jobs in the world. The role demands a high level of professionalism as one gets to nurture some of the best cricketers in the world and an assembly line of talented cricketers to follow," said Jay Shah.

Netherlands star Paul van Meekeren comes up with epic reply after Pakistan fan calls him Haris Rauf's son

Netherlands star Paul van Meekeren comes up with epic reply after Pakistan fan calls him Haris Rauf's son [PC: X]

Netherlands star Paul van Meekeren came up with a fitting reply after a Pakistan fan tried to insult him. The right-arm pacer had grabbed the limelight last year by opening up on his financial struggle.

In November 2020, Paul van Meekeren had revealed that he was working as a food delivery driver to make ends meet. The Dutch star continued working hard and eventually made the cricketing world notice him for his displays on the field during the ODI World Cup last year. He played nine games in the marquee event and picked up 12 wickets.

Coming to the recent incident involving the cricketer and the Pakistani fan, it took place on Saturday (May 25). The user tried to disrespect Paul van Meekeren by calling him Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf's son. He posted a clip of the altercation between the two bowlers when Pakistan and Netherlands faced each other in the World Cup last year.

Rauf had bowled some unplayable deliveries to the Netherlands pacer and eventually castled him. The right-arm pacer had also given Paul van Meekeren an aggressive send-off. Posting the clip, the user wrote: "@paulvanmeekren you are son of Haris Rauf."

Van Meekeren noticed the post and decided to respond to it. The fast bowler stated that the user was not the first one to call him Rauf's son and made sure to clear his doubt. He also asked the user to come up with other questions if he had doubts about his father's son.

"Since the last 50 over World Cup I’ve had many people say this… I just wanna clarify that I’m not Haris Raif’s son, my dad is actually, funnily enough, also called Paul (Adriaan) van Meekeren!! I hope this solves any confusion… if not please reach out with your questions." Paul van Meekeren wrote.

Here is the exchange between Paul van Meekeren and the fan:

Meanwhile, Van Meekeren will be seen in action soon when the T20 World Cup gets underway next month. He has been named in the 15-member Netherlands' squad for the tournament, scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29.

SRH

SRH (Credits: X)

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have decided to skip their only training sessions ahead of the finale of IPL 2024 which will see them clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Orange Army's ticket to finals was confirmed yesterday after they defeated the Rajasthan Royals by 36 runs at the MA Chidambaram stadium. The qualifier 2 match was really a nail-biting contest wherein Sanju Samson's side had the upper hand but Pat Cummins' men eventually prevailed against all odds.

IPL 2024 finale will be a replay of the 1st Qualifier match of this season. In their only two meetings in the league this season, the Knight Riders have come out on top on both occasions. In the qualifier match, KKR had in fact defeated SRH in a one-sided affair. It will be interesting to see how the two teams play against each other at the ultimate stage.

Why have SRH skipper their training session?

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have decided to skip their only net session before the final to have a rest day after the extremely hectic league and play-off stages. SRH played a lot of games in the last week and due to the heat and humidity in the city, the team management wants the players to take some valuable time off, as per reports in HT.

It means that SRH will only be sharpening themselves in the morning of the finale and during the warm-up session before the match in the evening. This is not only being done to manage the players' workload but also to make sure the players enter the most important fixture of the tournament. with a fresh mind.

SRH's decision to not opt for the training sessions also speaks volumes about the confidence the team has in themselves. Pat Cummins has really instilled a solid mindset within the team and they seem ready to challenge for the title. Yesterday's win marked the first time that Hyderabad reached an IPL final since the 2018 season.

It took the franchise 6 seasons to reach the finale and they will be aiming to return with a title.

While SRH skip training KKR spent extra hours in the nets

While the SRH skipped their training session today, the Kolkata Knight Riders are reportedly going to put in extra hours in the net sessions. The Shreyas Iyer-led side did not only train on Friday but they are also in line to have a 3-hour net session from 6-9 PM.

The team, which is mentored by Gautam Gambhir, does not want to leave any stone unturned in their preparation for the ultimate match. After all, it will be the first time that GG has reached the final as the mentor of a team. He has the chance of becoming the first person to win the tournament as a player and as a mentor.

Everything will be clear tomorrow at the MA Chidambaram stadium. Will the Orange Army get their hands on their 2nd IPL title or will the Knight Riders become the 3rd outfit in the competition to claim 3 titles?

Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi {PC:X}

Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi talked about the key to success in the T20 World Cup 2024 for the Babar Azam-led side. He said that the Men in Green has the strongest bowling lineup in the tournament and he hopes the team to reach the final of the event.

Pakistan will be one of the hot favorites to win the T20 World Cup 2024. They recently named their squad for the tournament and it's fair to say that it's a bowling-dominated attack as they have named five quality fast bowlers in their 15-player squad for the event, which will take place in the USA and the Caribbean.

Shaheen Afridi will be leading the bowling attack, which has the likes of Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abbas Afridi, and Mohammad Amir. Apart from this, they have spinners in Shadab Khan and Abrar Ahmed.

Pakistan in the last two T20 World Cups has been brilliant. They reached the semi-final in 2021 and then played the final in 2022. However, this time around they would be keen to go one step ahead and win the tournament, claiming their second title.

Shahid Afridi believes that Pakistan will make the final of the ICC T20 World 2024 because the conditions will favor them. While highlighting the fast bowling prowess of the team, he claimed that all the players will have having huge responsibility. Speaking to ICC, he stated:

"I think in any cricket team in the world, nobody has such a strong bowling line-up. All our four fast bowlers have a lot of skill and even the bowlers sitting on the bench like Abbas (Afridi)... have a lot of skill with a good slower ball. If the players with such good skills enter this World Cup against world-class batters they will perform well.

"All the names will also have a huge responsibility over them. Pakistan finished as runners-up at the most recent edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 and Afridi believes the team can at least match that effort this time around. I feel Pakistan should make the final. The reason is that the conditions (in West Indies and USA) suit our team."

If I had to pick one, I would pick the captain Babar Azam - Shahid Afridi on key player for Pakistan

Shahid Afridi further analyzed the team's squad and pointed out that the strike rate of the batters in the middle overs is the only thing that bothers him. He also picked Babar Azam as the key player for the team, saying that the skipper's decision would take them to victory. He added:

"If we look at the spinners in our team, they are outstanding. They might not be in form but I know they will return in form. If we talk about fast bowling, it’s an incredible attack. In batting, we have great strength. The thing that bothers me is the strike rate of our batters, especially in between the seven to thirteen over phase. I hope that the strike rate improves in that phase. In terms of runs per over, eight or nine runs per over are needed but still Pakistan are my favourite."

"All players in the team are important. But if you look at the performances in the recent past, Babar (Azam). (Mohammad) Rizwan, Fakhar (Zaman), Shaheen (Afridi), Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Shadab (Khan) - all of them play an important role and will be key (for Pakistan) at the World Cup. But if I had to pick one, I would pick the captain Babar Azam, because he is the leader. I want him to perform well, and make timely decisions which will take the team to victory," he concluded.
