Luke Ronchi delays joining as Pakistan head coach

Former Australia and New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman Luke Ronchi has reportedly become the latest to reject the offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board to take over as National team head coach. Ronchi, who has worked with the Kiwi national side as the wicket-keeping coach, was heavily linked to finally end PCB’s search for a new coach after Shane Watson and Darren Sammy had rejected the offer.

It was reported yesterday that Luke Ronchi is the favorite to join as Pakistan’s new head coach and it was also said that negotiations are at an advanced stage. However, a new report has come from a Pakistani journalist earlier today that Ronchi is not signing the contract just yet. That means all the hype and talks around the former wicket-keeper batsman joining the Green Army will pause as of now.

This proves to be an added tension for the PCB who have been looking for a head coach for the last 2 months now. They were hopeful of bringing Shane Watson on board earlier this month before the Australian rejected due to leakage of information as well as other commitments. Darren Sammy, who was head coaching Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 9, had also declined the offer due to his contract as West Indies’ white-ball coach.

Will Pakistan go to the T20 World Cup without a head coach?

With less than 3 months remaining for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, Pakistan is facing a scare of going to the tournament without a head coach in place. That could prove to be disastrous and discouraging, given the fact that they had played extremely well in the previous two T20 WC editions in 2021 and 2022.

Pakistan, who were then under the captaincy of star batter Babar Azam, had gone all the way to the semi-finals of the 2021 edition in UAE where they lost to eventual champions Australia. Then during the 2022 edition at the Land Down Under, the Men in Green made a shocking appearance in the final despite suffering defeats against India and Zimbabwe in the first round.

Blackcaps batting coach Luke Ronchi has refuted claims he is on the verge of signing on as Pakistan head coach #Cricket

— Saj Sadiq (@SajSadiqCricket) March 28, 2024

However, Babar Azam’s side lost once again, this time to England who emulated West Indies’ feat of being the most successful team in the tournament. But since then, Pakistan’s performance has remained questionable, especially on foreign grounds and therefore, they must aim to sign Luke Ronchi and hope that he can guide the team to new heights.

If not Ronchi, then they must find a good alternative but the most important thing is that PCB should give assurance to whoever they appoint that their contract will not be terminated with a snap.

Pakistan’s schedule for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies

In their opening match of the 20-team event, Pakistan will face off against host nation USA on June 6 in Dallas before taking on arch-rivals India on June 9 at the iconic New York City. They will then lock horns against minnows Canada on June 11 in NY before playing against Ireland in Florida on June 16.

Sourav Ganguly and Prithvi Shaw

Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly, recently revealed the team’s strategy behind Prithvi Shaw’s exclusion from the playing XI against the Punjab Kings (PBKS). Sourav Ganguly stated that the team decided to open with David Warner and Mitchell Marsh.

Prithvi Shaw was omitted from the playing XI in their IPL 2024 opening encounter in Mullanpur on Saturday, March 23. Many expressed surprise over Shaw’s exclusion, given that he was retained by the team before the mini-auction in December last year.

The Delhi Capitals opted for an all-Australian duo of Mitchell Marsh and David Warner. This strategic move paid off immediately, as the duo propelled the team to a brisk start, adding 39 runs in 19 balls. Marsh scored 20 runs off 12 balls before being dismissed.

Warner smashed two sixes and three boundaries in his 21-ball 29. Despite the Capitals’ strong start, they struggled for momentum, managing only 174 runs in their allocated 20 overs. The Punjab Kings comfortably chased down the target with four wickets in hand.

Prithvi Shaw Is An Opener – Sourav Ganguly

Speaking on the eve of the Delhi Capitals’ second match, Sourav Ganguly explained the decision to open with Mitchell Marsh and David Warner, aiming to optimize the team’s batting order for a strong start.

“Prithvi Shaw is an opener. We decided to open with Marsh and Warner and Ricky Bhui is a middle-order batter. So they bat at different positions. So it’s actually not Bhui for sure. It’s a different opening combination, they opened for Australia and they have done well together. So we decided to do that,” Sourav Ganguly told the press.

Shaw had a disappointing previous season, managing only 106 runs in eight matches at an average of 13.25. He was dropped from the team due to his lack of impact in the first six games. However, he scored 54 runs off 38 balls against the PBKS in his comeback game.

Didn’t Get Much Of Prithvi Shaw In The Camp – Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly noted that the Delhi Capitals’ coaching staff had limited time to work with Prithvi Shaw during the off-season. Ganguly highlighted Shaw’s injury and commitments with Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24.

“To be honest, we did not get much of Prithvi Shaw in the camp. Unfortunately, he was injured for a long time. After he went to England for the county stint in Northamptonshire where he played exceptionally well and tore his ligament in the knee, we couldn’t get him till February. After he came back to fitness, he played Ranji Trophy.”

“I remember we set up a four-day training camp with him, but then, the NCA announced him fit and then he went on to play Ranji Trophy. You can’t take anybody away from the Ranji Trophy and put in an IPL camp. And then Mumbai won the tournament, and he played till the last day of the tournament. He played till the 14th and then joined the camp.”

Prithvi Shaw’s successful County Championship stint was curtailed by an injury, delaying his return to action until February. Upon his comeback, he represented Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, where they emerged as champions of the domestic red-ball tournament.

Hardik Pandya Dancing Rohit Sharma Angry

Even since Hardik Pandya took the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians team by replacing Rohit Sharma, many fans have attacked him on social media. Fans did not spare Hardik Pandya even inside the stadium during MI’s first two games in IPL 2024.

Earlier, the MI skipper was booed by the Ahmedabad crowd during the team’s opening game vs Gujarat Titans. In the previous clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad too, fans inside Rajiv Gandhi Stadium bored the MI skipper as he arrived on the field to bat.

— Sania Nawaz (@imsanianawaz258) March 28, 2024

Fans’ hatred towards Hardik Pandya is due to two reasons. First, he parted ways with Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 and joined Mumbai Indians. This angered fans of Gujarat Titans. Later, MI removed Rohit Sharma as skipper and named Pandya as the new captain of the side.

The decision did not go well with many Rohit Sharma fans. They criticized the decision on social media and also targeted Pandya. Millions of fans unfollowed Mumbai Indians on social media after the event.

Across two games, Pandya has failed to shine with both bat and ball. He scored 24 off 20 balls in the previous match vs SRH. In the opening clash against MI, Pandya hit 11 off 4 balls but failed to capture winning runs in the final over. He remained wicketless vs GT but picked 1 scalp vs SRH.

Hardik Pandya - Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya delivered a motivational speech following their loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Hardik Pandya expressed confidence in his teammates’ ability to overcome adversity together.

The Mumbai Indians suffered a 31-run defeat in a high-scoring encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, March 27. Despite playing two matches this season, the Mumbai-based team has yet to earn any points in the table.

We Are The Toughest Team In The Competition – Hardik Pandya

In a video shared on the Mumbai Indians’ Instagram account, Hardik Pandya emphasized the resilience of the team, labeling them as the toughest in the competition.

The MI skipper expressed pride in the bowlers’ willingness to confront challenges head-on. Pandya urged unity among the team members, emphasizing collective support in navigating through any adversity they may face.

“Toughest soldiers get the toughest test. And we are the toughest team in the competition. Anyone who could have come, even close to where we reached, as a batting group or just overall Mumbai Indians, are us. Something I’m really proud of is our bowlers.”

“Even when the day was tough, I didn’t see anyone running away. Everyone wanted the ball, and I think that’s a good sign. So let’s make sure that we help each other throughout whatever happens. Worst, bad, good. We will manage it together, and we’ll be together,”
Pandya said.

Mumbai Indians Bowlers Fail To Make Impact

Speaking about the match, Hardik Pandya opted to field first after winning the toss. However, the decision backfired as Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a flying start. Travis Head attacked the MI bowlers from the beginning and reached his fifty in just 18 deliveries.

Head and Abhishek Sharma added 68 runs off just 22 balls for the second wicket. Abhishek brought up his half-century in 16 balls, breaking Head’s record. Sharma scored 63 runs off 23 balls before being dismissed by Piyush Chawla on the final ball of the 11th over.

Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen continued the onslaught to help the team achieve a high total. The duo formed an unbeaten 116-run partnership off 54 balls, as SRH ended with 277 runs in 20 overs, marking the highest total in the history of the tournament.

Hardik Pandya, Piyush Chawla, and Gerald Coetzee each secured a wicket. Jasprit Bumrah emerged as Mumbai’s most economical bowler, conceding only 36 runs in his four overs, despite the opposition’s record-breaking total.

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided a strong start in the chase. Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir added an 84-run stand for the third wicket to keep the team in the game. Varma scored 64 runs off 34 balls, but none of the other batters surpassed the 50-run mark.

The Hardik Pandya-led team concluded their innings with a total of 246/5, falling short of the target by 31 runs. They aim to rebound after facing consecutive losses in the ongoing tournament.

Hardik Pandya Dancing Rohit Sharma Angry

After Hardik Pandya lost his wicket against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024 match 8, fans at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad teased him by shouting Rohit Sharma’s name. Hardik Pandya is the new skipper of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024.

Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as MI skipper after joining the team ahead of IPL 2024. The move angered many fans of Rohit Sharma; who also took to social media to slam Pandya and the MI franchise for the decision.

The hatred has also gone inside the stadium, where the fans have booed Pandya in both MI games in IPL 2024. Even during the SRH vs MI encounter on Wednesday, March 27, fans attacked Pandya during his time on the field.

The MI skipper completely failed to smack runs against SRH bowlers. He could only score 24 runs off 20 deliveries before losing his wicket. SRH pacer Jaydev Unadkat dismissed him with a bouncer in the final ball of the 18th over. Pandya tried to pull it but it went straight to wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians lost the high-scoring game against Sunrisers Hyderabad by 31 runs. Chasing a gigantic 278, they fell short towards the end and could only put up 246-5 on the board. Tilak Verma slammed the most 64 runs for the team as they failed to chase down 278.

SRH posts highest-ever IPL total vs MI

Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad broke numerous batting records in the 1st innings. They registered the highest-ever team total of 277 in the match. They broke RCB’s record of 263-5, which they set in IPL 2013.

Mumbai Indians have registered a miserable start in IPL 2024. The five-time champions have lost two back-to-back matches in IPL 2024. Before losing to SRH, they lost to Gujarat Titans in their first game by 6 runs. Mumbai will next face Rajasthan Royals on Monday, April 1 at Wankhede Stadium.

MS Dhoni Steve Smith

Australian cricketer Steve Smith believes that the Rajasthan Royals will be hard to beat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Steve Smith remarked that the Rajasthan Royals seem to be the most well-balanced team in the ongoing prestigious tournament.

The Rajasthan Royals commenced their campaign with a notable victory over the Lucknow Super Giants in their season opener, securing a win by a margin of 20 runs. The Royals will host Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals in their next match on Thursday, March 28.

In their head-to-head encounters in Jaipur, the Royals have emerged victorious in four out of six matches against the Delhi Capitals, who have won two. The most recent meeting between the two teams in Jaipur took place in 2019, where DC secured a six-wicket victory.

They Will Be Hard To Beat – Steve Smith

Speaking to Star Sports, Steve Smith pointed out the current trend of home teams winning in IPL 2024. Smith emphasized the formidable spinners in the Royals’ lineup, such as Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin.

“Home teams are winning at the moment. I am not ready for them to break the trend just yet. They look the complete team this year. They have got all the bases covered. Their spinners, I’m really keen to watch again. Chahal and Ashwin are outstanding. The two guys up top are potentially the two most destructive in the IPL. If they get going and have an incredible season, they will be hard to beat,” said Smith.

Buttler demonstrated remarkable performance in the 2022 season, scoring 863 runs in 17 matches. Jaiswal excelled in the 2023 season and scored 624 runs in 14 matches, setting a record for the highest runs scored by an uncapped player in a single IPL season.

Sanju Samson Played Beautifully – Steve Smith

Steve Smith highlighted Sanju Samson’s historical trend of starting IPL seasons strongly but declining later on. Smith emphasized the importance of Samson maintaining consistency throughout the season, particularly in leading from the front.

“He played beautifully, got them the win. He seems to be playing well, looks to be in a very good place. He looks comfortable. He is striking the ball really well. I think his captaincy was outstanding and he would want to continue that form.”

“His seasons in the past have tapered off a bit in the end, and that will be weighing on his mind. To keep that standard up and leading from the front,”
said Smith.

Skipper Sanju Samson showcased an exceptional performance, scoring 82 runs off 52 balls, including three fours and six maximums. Riyan Parag, promoted to No. 4 in the batting order, contributed crucial 43 runs off 29 balls, featuring one four and three sixes.

Samson consistently delivers big knocks once he settles at the crease. He has mastered a balanced approach, alternating between ground strokes and aerial shots as needed. Maintaining this form and avoiding reckless strokes will be crucial for his continued success.

Rajasthan Royals Probable XII: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, Nandre Burger, Ravichandran Ashwin, Avesh Khan, Trent Boult, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal.

The camp is being organized for the chief selectors to determine the squad for their upcoming home T20I series against New Zealand, the away series in England as well as the ICC T20 World Cup later this June.

The Kakul training camp consists of a total of 29 players across the nation and it has also seen the return of players like Mohammed Amir and Imad Wasim. The PCB has also called up some fresh and talented youth players who shined in the recently concluded PSL 9. While all the players are grinding it out for selection in Pakistan’s upcoming assignments, it seems as if Azam Khan won’t be cutting.

According to various reports coming from the Kakul training camp, Azam Khan failed to complete the entire 2-kilometer run on the second day of the camp. The wicket-keeper batsman who won the recently concluded PSL 9 edition with Islamabad United, was able to cover only 1 and a half kilometers distance, that too in a lengthy duration of 20 minutes.

Azam Khan chokes while newcomer Irfanullah Khan Niazi shines in the running test

Azam Khan had not only won the PSL 9 title but he was also adjudged as the best wicket-keeper of the tournament for his nifty glovework. However, his failure to complete the 2 km run comes across as a shocker, given the fact that he has represented the Pakistan national side on 8 occasions.

As he failed to cover the entire distance, newcomer Irfanullah Khan Niazi turned out to be the best performer on the running test. He managed to cover the entire distance within 6 minutes and 47 seconds and also maintained a considerable advantage over the other players including senior figures like Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi among others.

The same report that stated Azam Khan struggled during the run, also revealed the scores of all the other players. Rizwan finished the run within 8 minutes and 26 seconds, whereas Mohammad Haris, Naseem Shah, Haseebullah, and Mohmmad Wasim Jr. completed the task by 8 minutes and 30 seconds.

Pakistan’s captain in the shortest format Shaheen Afridi took 8 minutes and 37 seconds, and Mehran Mumtaz took 8 minutes and 30 seconds. The likes of Agha Salman, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Nawaz completed their runs by 9 minutes and 20 seconds, 9 minutes and 30 seconds, 9 minutes and 56 seconds, and 9 minutes and 57 seconds respectively.

There were 4 senior absentees too in the camp. Imad Wasim, who was recently called up by the PCB for the T20 World Cup in June was not there due to his knee injury. Explosive batter Fakhar Zaman and right-arm fast bowler Haris Rauf missed the camp due to the injuries they picked up in PSL 9. Lastly, star batter Babar Azam could not participate because he visited Saudi Arabia.

What next for Azam Khan?

Azam Khan’s failure indicates that he may find it very difficult to break into the Pakistani squad for the New Zealand series. With his fitness being a major issue, the 25-year-old doesn’t even boast of a good record from the matches he has played for the Green Army. In all of his 8 T20Is against New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, and West Indies, Azam has failed to score over 10 runs.

He will now be hoping to impress the selectors in the next rounds of the camp and that remains as his only chance to stage a return.
