The overview

Not many teams in the IPL go into a game with just a lone specialist spinner in their XI. Sunrisers Hyderabad bucked that trend this season by picking only Washington Sundar alongside four pacers. Washington also offers them the much needed balance at number 7 and that is precisely why he is a very vital member in that side. How SRH cope with his absence might have a significant say in their campaign even though he is not expected to be sidelined for a prolonged period. Had SRH missed a frontline seamer to injury, they would have been better equipped to handle that scenario considering the backups they have at their disposal but in the spin department, the cupboard is indeed barren.

Shreyas Gopal and Jagadeesha Suchith appear to be the alternatives at this moment but are they good enough to bat at 7? Can they recreate the same impact Washington has made with the ball? How about Abdul Samad? SRH do have an option to recall the exciting youngster and it remains to be seen if they can have him and Aiden Markram split up the fifth bowler's duties. The timing of Washington's injury is the key for SRH as they finally appeared to be picking up pace after losing their first two games. They clicked as a unit in the next two to register wins and there is now a real danger of that momentum coming to a screeching halt.

The time is also ripe for Kolkata Knight Riders to get things back in order after losing their last game. Despite winning three out of their first four matches, KKR were completely outplayed by Delhi Capitals in their last game and their bowling will certainly be a concern. Pat Cummins is leaking runs non stop despite impressing with the bat the other day and Varun Chakravarthy hasn't been as effective as he was earlier. The bowling relies a lot on veterans Umesh Yadav and Sunil Narine but they do need support. In the batting department, Nitish Rana and Ajinkya Rahane haven't been firing and the latter might face the axe. But with their opponent's spin department significantly weakened, this is indeed an opportunity for KKR's batters to get back into the groove.

When: SRH vs KKR, April 15, 19:30 IST

Where: Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

What to expect: It's been a batting-friendly venue so far. In the five games played here, the lowest first innings total is 177. Under lights, chasing seems to be the norm here but Punjab Kings did comfortably defend 180 against Chennai Super Kings earlier this month.

IPL Head to Head: SRH 7 - 14 KKR

Unavailable:
Washington Sundar

Tactics & Matchups:

Whoever SRH pick to bowl spin, they should ideally target Ajinkya Rahane first up since he prefers pace up front. But if Rahane does get dropped, it will present SRH a problem since their backup spinner(s) might potentially bowl to the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana, who are renowned for smashing spin.

Likewise, it's important from SRH's perspective that someone takes on KKR's spin duo. They have a combined economy rate of 6.07 this season, which is the lowest amongst all teams in 2022. Rahul Tripathi will remain the key in this regard.

Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Kane Williamson (C), Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Shashank Singh, Abdul Samad/Shreyas Gopal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, T Natarajan

Kolkata Knight Riders

Tactics & Matchups: Do KKR really need Rasikh Salam in that XI? They do have six bowling options without him and anyway gave him only one over against DC in their last game. They can look to strengthen their batting lineup by dropping Salam especially against a strong SRH pace attack. If KKR do decide to drop Rahane in order to make room for Aaron Finch, then Sam Billings will have to make way for Sheldon Jackson.

How KKR's frontline batters handle Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be key. The likes of Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana have a moderate record against Bhuvneshwar. But at the death, Andre Russell will back himself to get the job done as he strikes at 231.7 against the Indian seamer.

Probable XI: Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane/Aaron Finch, Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Sam Billings/Sheldon Jackson, Rinku Singh/Rasikh Salam, Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy

Did you know?

Since 2020, Sunrisers Hyderabad haven't managed to beat Kolkata Knight Riders, losing all four games.

Umesh Yadav and Sunil Narine have been KKR's best bowlers this season but Rahul Tripathi's career strike rate against those two is 221.42 and 160.61 respectively.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has picked 28 wickets against KKR - the most he has picked against any franchise
