The Overview

Among half a dozen teams that are currently tied at six points each in IPL 2022, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings have a slight advantage over the other sides in terms of NRR. On momentum, Hyderabad would be expected to fare much better on the back of a hat-trick of wins - looking to make it four as they go into the Sunday (April 17) double-header against Punjab, who have alternated between the highs and lows so far.

A new-look Punjab's intent filled batting approach has been the cornerstone of their early success. They assembled an assortment of power-hitters to pack their top-half - the experience of Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal and Jonny Bairstow to go with the reputation and muscle of Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan and Odean Smith. This aggressive route has served them well too with PBKS notching up 180-plus totals in four of their five games thus far. The inclusion of Jitesh Sharma, too, has clicked instantly with the wicketkeeper-bat effortlessly taking the attack to the opposition, be it in the middle-overs against spin (26 off 17 vs CSK and 23 off 11 vs GT) or towards in death overs (30* off 15 vs MI).

At the same time, their two defeats saw familiar issues rearing its ugly head. The six-wicket defeat to KKR has already served them an early reality check of the potential pitfalls of a singular batting approach on an off day, while the final-ball defeat to Gujarat Titans brought to the fore their death bowling woes from last season - as much as it was to do with the brilliance of Rahul Tewatia and his nerves of steel. Though against a side that has been relentless with the ball, any slip-ups could cost them two vital points.

Hyderabad, by their own admission, took some time settling in but the turnaround has been spectacular since. They've put behind the disappointment of opening two defeats and collected crucial points against two of its bugbears - CSK and KKR. Led by T Natarajan, who's been equally good with the new ball and at death, and even in the injury-forced absence of Washington Sundar, the bowling unit has gelled well, marshalled brilliantly by their canny captain. Marco Jansen has been a revelation, troubling the best of batters with his variations.

The batting too has found new heroes in each of their three wins that have come chasing 150-plus targets. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson have both made good contributions, Rahul Tripathi's improved strike-rate of 150 against spin in the middle-overs makes him a dangerous prospect, Aiden Markram offers flexibility in the middle order and Nicholas Pooran has shown glimpses of the punch he can pack he crucial cameos. Sunday could be this in-form unit's biggest test yet in matching up to their opponent's brutal take with the bat.

When: Sunday, April 17 at 3:30 PM IST

Where: Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai

What to expect: The afternoon starts are going to make for much hotter conditions but dew won't dictate terms as much.

Head to Head

SRH 18-6 PBKS. Hyderabad's overall dominance is unmissable, but since 2018 the two teams have clashed eight times and won equally.

Team Watch

Punjab Kings

Tactics & Matchups:
A common denominator in SRH's slow going in powerplays this year has been captain Williamson's dud starts (63 runs and 3 dismissals) - a weakness Punjab would look to exploit too with the new ball.

Having already delivered three crucial 18th overs this season against well-set batters for a combined 13 runs (3 vs RCB, 5 each vs GT & MI), Arshdeep Singh is going to be vital at death for Punjab's bowling that has usually been on the expensive side.

Probable XI: Mayank Agarwal (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan, Odeon Smith, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Vaibhav Arora

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Tactics & Matchups:
T Natarajan had just three PowerPlay wickets to his name in 22 overs in IPL previously, but he's picked up four already in this phase this year. Against Punjab's gung-ho batting approach - a team that currently has the highest run-rate (10.17) and boundary percentage (25.6%) in powerplays, how he fares with the new ball is going to hold the key for Hyderabad.

Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Kane Williamson (C), Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Shashank Singh, J Suchith, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, T Natarajan

Did you know?

-Kane Williamson has won all five tosses while Mayank Agarwal has not won one since Punjab's opening game against RCB.

- Of the 7 Powerplay totals of 60 or more this IPL, four of them have been Punjab's.

- Rahul Tripathi's tournament strike-rate of 178.13 is highest by anyone who bats in the top-three.

What they said?

Like any team that is starting fresh, we have got a lot of new faces in the squad. It's finding their way, feeling settled in the environment, feeling settled with their roles in the team, just getting their feet under the table. We obviously had a poor start in the first game, in the second game we found ourselves in a position where we should have won and now we have had three on the bounce. So, I think everyone's sort of feeling comfortable with the balance of the side, comfortable with the roles they have got in the side and confidence is a big thing. We have got some good confidence out of that first win and we have built from there - SRH head coach Tom Moody on the reason behind the team's turnaround

Teams:

Punjab Kings
(Playing XI): Shikhar Dhawan(c), Prabhsimran Singh, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma(w), Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Vaibhav Arora, Arshdeep Singh

Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): Abhishek Sharma, Kane Williamson(c), Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran(w), Shashank Singh, Jagadeesha Suchith, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, T Natarajan

Shikhar Dhawan - Mayank got hit on his toe, he should be fine for the next game. So, there's just one change for us - Prabhsimran is in. We are performing well without depending on individuals - need to continue playing well as a unit, the bowling can get better, we're working on it. The team is new and we're taking time to settle. The toss could be an advantage, it's a bit sticky, the ball could turn, but if we put up a good total, we can put them under pressure.

Kane Williamson - We will bowl first. It's something we've done recently, we need to just play according to our plans. The wicket will hold up for the entire game, just need to make those small improvements, the signs are good, and need to adjust to the conditions early. Same team for us

Sunrisers Hyderabad have won the toss and have opted to field

Shikhar Dhawan
has come out for the toss, not sure if Mayank is playing then

Kagiso Rabada: It is hot, I didn't expect it to be this hot but it's something we have to deal with. Obviously it's going to be a challenge and let's see how we do. We try to be as professional as possible in terms of our fitness, let's see how far that takes us today. In the IPL, you have to perform under pressure every single game. It's always relentless and tough and somehow there's always a close game no matter what team you play for. It's a highly competitive tournament. You can never really get a break, so it's just .... every ball is an event. The game has become a lot more professional with the analysis, every team has their own analysis and every team is planning and that's what we are doing. You look through every batter and I'm sure that the batters look through the bowlers too. We've played against each other over the years, so you have an idea. People tend to do the same thing but every now and then, you come with something new. You just need to be on your toes and do the prep with the analyst before getting into the game. Most importantly, you need to trust your instincts.

It's hot and humid today - it's a used pitch, it's dry, there are tufts of grass. Pace could be the key for the fast bowlers. The captain winning the toss might opt to bat first on this track, reckons Rohan Gavaskar, in his pitch report.

2:30 pm IST: After enduring a rough start to the season, the Sunrisers are back on track, registering three convincing wins on the trot and being right back in the mix as far as the points table is concerned. They might have lost David Warner and Rashid Khan, but they splashed the cash at the auctions and returned with a team that's starting to look quite formidable. Batting at 3, Rahul Tripathi has engineered two run chases, Markram and Pooran are interchangeable, and both have looked in good touch. Umran Malik's raw pace has found many takers and the rest of the pace bowling attack has turned back to the pages, back to the period when the Sunrisers could defend any score. In short, they're on a roll and this is coming despite a couple of injury concerns. They're up against a powerful batting unit today in the form of the Punjab Kings. Having blown hot and cold so far, the Kings haven't exactly found the winning tonic, but they too are in that congested mid-table slot. They're coming off a morale boosting win though and if their batting clicks, we could be in for a run-fest at DY Patil.
