The overview

After receiving the initial rounds of punching, is there enough life in Mumbai Indians to go the distance in IPL 2022?

Suryakumar Yadav thinks so. "I think we're playing some good cricket from Game 1, and there's no situation like panicking for a team like Mumbai Indians," the in-form batter said ahead of the game against Lucknow Super Giants. "We've been following good processes in the past few years and we're just sticking to it. If we just keep doing it, we'll eventually get our first win."

Among all the not-so-merry news that has come MI's way over the last few weeks, there is one pleasant update - the Pune stay of their caravan has come to an end, as they now move back to the more familiar climes and conditions of Mumbai.

At the moment though, with results not coming their way, they have made too many changes to their liking - and without much success either. The playing conditions at the Brabourne Stadium, where they will face their next challenge on Saturday afternoon, will be less dynamic than the ones found in Pune - ideally making it easier for the management to fix in on their ideal combination.

While experiments may be a bit forced for MI, the in-form KL Rahul-led side pulled out some surprise moves in their batting order against Rajasthan Royals, and eventually fell three runs short of the target to end a three-match winning run.

But not a lot has gone wrong for them so far in their inaugural IPL season, and with the availability of Marcus Stoinis, they have their best team available against the hosts. Despite clicking well so far as a team, several players are yet to hit their peak performance levels. The two narrow losses in five games have left them outside the top four on the points table, a position from where they would look for urgent ascendancy. If they succeed in their pursuit, Mumbai Indians would be downed to their sixth successive defeat - a stretch from which neither Mumbai Indians nor another team has previously managed to recover and make it to the playoffs.

When: Saturday, April 16, 2022, 3:30 PM IST

Where: Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

What to expect: With an afternoon start, the conditions will be fairly hotter for Mumbai Indians, who played their last three games in the evenings in Pune. With small boundaries on offer, expect a run-fest. Toss may not play a big role in this contest.

Team Watch:

Mumbai Indians

Tactics & Matchups:
Mumbai Indians might look to beef up their lower middle order, especially given that Lucknow Super Giants have been poor in the death overs. LSG seamers have gone at 10.87 while six overs from their spinners in this phase have leaked 83 runs (ER 13.83).

Probable XI: Ishan Kishan (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Dewald Brevis, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Fabian Allen, Murugan Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat/Basil Thampi, Tymal Mills

Lucknow Super Giants

Tactics & Matchups:
No team has employed more overs of spin in the middle overs than LSG and they also lead in wickets charts for this phase, all going at under run-a-ball. LSG have all varieties of spin in their arsenal and have been selectively deploying them on a case-by-case basis. K Gowtham was brought in against left-hander heavy sides like DC and RR while Krunal was not used at all against RR. Ravi Bishnoi has enjoyed reasonable success against MI batters (Surya, Rohit, Kishan and Pollard) and has managed to keep them quiet.

Probable XI: KL Rahul (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni, Jason Holder, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Dushmantha Chameera, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan

Did you know?

- Mumbai Indians have started the 2022 season with five defeats. Only twice in IPL have a team had a longer losing sequence at the start of the season - six each by Delhi Daredevils in 2013 and RCB in 2019.

- Five defeats for Mumbai Indians is also their joint-longest losing sequence in IPL. They lost each of their first five matches in 2014 edition and the first four matches in 2015 which was preceded by a loss in the Eliminator in the previous season.

- Outside of the Powerplay, Ishan Kishan's strike rate in T20s this year is only 122.63.

What they said:

"It is still a champion team. It's not 'used to be'. It is still a champion team and it will always be a champion team. It's just a matter of a few games" - Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai Indians batter.

"We have a lot of all-rounders, so many options and so we could shuffle the batting order a bit. We like to be a bit unpredictable a bit," KL Rahul, Lucknow Super Giants captain, on his team.

Teams:

Lucknow Super Giants
(Playing XI): KL Rahul(c), Quinton de Kock(w), Manish Pandey, Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni, Jason Holder, Krunal Pandya, Dushmantha Chameera, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan(w), Dewald Brevis, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Fabian Allen, Jaydev Unadkat, Murugan Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Tymal Mills

KL Rahul: We are playing some good cricket since the first game. It's a new team and the boys are coming together really well and we always found a way to stay in the game. We have one change. Gowtham misses out and Manish Pandey comes in.

Rohit Sharma:
We will look to bowl first. Since it's a day game we tried to get another slower bowler. We wanted to slow things in the middle overs. It's a good pitch to play cricket and with his experience coming in, it will be good for us. We got Tymal, Fabian, Polly and Brevis. We just need to keep things under control and stay calm, it's that simple. We don't need to overcomplicate things. We just need to come out and play basic cricket and will be focussing on doing that.

Mumbai Indians have won the toss and have opted to field

Toss time:
KL Rahul calls heads and it comes down as tails

Surya Kumar Yadav - I just do the same things every time, even in the nets, I take care of all the pressure, so that I can relate to it during actual match situations. We aren't talking too much, go out and express yourselves, play a fearless brand of cricket. I think we put ourselves under too much pressure in the earlier few games, go and play with a free mind irrespective of the result. We are playing good cricket, but it's important to win key moments.

Debut blues: The best West Indian fielder currently Fabian Allen, who's painted his hair in blue, gets his Mumbai Indians cap from Kieron Pollard.

Quinton de Kock: The team environment is on a high, we have done really well for a new team this season. It's about carrying all the momentum, we got a great squad and a bunch of great guys. It's pretty good (opening with Rahul), we are pretty relaxed. It's pretty easy, we don't think too much, we have some sort of mutual understanding. We are trying to get the momentum back after our previous loss. Mumbai are going to be very desperate for their first win and I think they are going to come out hard. I got a feeling they are going to come out fighting which is expected, obviously it's Mumbai, we just need to dig deep. One game we get a really slow spicy wicket, and the next game it's a pretty flat at the top. The team batting second has got better conditions. Today it's a day game, there was a bit of movement early on last night. Let's see what happens.

Pitch report: The weather is set fair. This pitch was used in match 2 (Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals) in this IPL. It's very good for batting and it's very hard. There is a bit of grass covering and we had good bounce in the last game. You get more value by bowling short. A very good track for batting and I'd be tempted to bat first," reckons Graeme Swann.

Lucknow Super Giants: Quinton de Kock. KL Rahul. The best opening left-right duo in white ball cricket? It's tough to say no, but a quick glance at their next five names in the batting line-up makes you wonder if this is the best planned/strategised team post the auction. Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda have been their biggest positives and the introduction of Marcus Stoinis only adds more zing to the middle-order. With three wins from five games, the Giants will be keen to claim a win and head to the top of the points table. Will they make any changes? Highly unlikely.

Mumbai Indians: Five games. Five losses. Mumbai Indians will be hurt and hungry after what seems to be a disastrous start to the season. They came close to winning their last game, but two crucial run-outs cost them. Since the arrival of Suryakumar Yadav, their batting looks fairly good but it's the bowling that proved to be the point of concern. If Mumbai Indians' social media game is anything to go by, we might see a debut to one of Australia's quickest, Riley Meredith, today. Bowling coach Shane Bond spoke about Meredit's intent and pace in the last game and given the erratic performances from Mills and Sams, a chance to Meredith is round the corner.

14:30 local, 09:00 GMT: Hello and welcome! It's the double-header day in IPL. First up, Mumbai Indians will be taking on Lucknow Super Giants at Brabourne Stadium, a venue that proved to be most-friendly for the batters. Are we in for a high-scoring thriller? How are the teams shaping up? What's the pitch and weather like? All the details coming right up....

LSG 199/4 (20)
MI 181/9 (20)

Lucknow Super Giants won by 18 runs

19:33 Local Time, 14:03 GMT, 19:33 IST:
The ton from KL Rahul set it up and then some discipline with the ball and on the field helped LSG to pull off this win. MI have slipped to their sixth loss. A chase of 200 was not supposed to be easy. And LSG bowlers stuck to their strengths and put in some good application to stifle the chase. The form of Rohit Sharma, then Kishan as well as Surya not delivering big scores proved to be the deterrent again for MI. Too much was left for Pollard to do and wasn't made easy as the death bowling was pretty good.
