Virat Kohli

Former India National Cricket Team batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who is currently the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has said that the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli has a “realistic chance” of registering 50 centuries in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Former India National Cricket Team captain Virat Kohli has scored 12,471 runs in ODIs at a remarkable average of 57.47. He has so far slammed 44 centuries and 64 half-centuries in 265 ODI games, with his most recent ODI hundred coming against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

Speaking to Star Sports, Bangar said that Kohli has achieved the fantastic milestone of 44 ODI tons at a “breathtaking pace”.

He added that India will be playing a lot of ODIs in 2023 as this is the 50-over World Cup year and hence Kohli will have a realistic chance of achieving the 50 ODI tons landmark.

“He has done that at a breathtaking pace because to reach 44 hundreds so young in his career is a fabulous achievement. But for me, can he do it this season taking into account the number of games that India have – maybe 26 or 27.

“If they eventually end up reaching the finals, then obviously there is a realistic chance that he can touch that milestone,” said Bangar.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Bangar opined that Kohli will regularly be featuring in ODIs for India and he will be taking breaks only in T20Is.

“He will have to bat out of his skin because as somebody who is playing all the formats, he will have to take regular breaks. I think the breaks will now be in the T20 format, not so much in the 50-over format. I don’t think he will touch it but he will get pretty close,” Bangar added.

The T20Is will be played on January 3, 5 and 7 in Mumbai, Pune and Rajkot respectively. The ODIs will be played on January 10, 12, and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata, and Trivandrum respectively.
