Shubman Gill

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill was all praises for his teammates' valiant fight in the recently concluded game against Delhi Capitals. Although GT ended up losing the game by four runs, their captain made sure to praise his teammates for their effort.

Chasing 225 runs, GT looked all but out of the game when they were reduced to 152 for 6 in the 16th over. However, the likes of David Miller, Rashid Khan, and R Sai Kishore came up with valiant efforts and nearly took GT over the line. In the end, the Gujarat-based outfit finished their innings on 220/8.

In the 17th over, Miller completed a 21-ball fifty by smashing Anrich Nortje for 24 runs including three sixes and a four. After his departure in the 18th over, Rashid and Kishore collected 18 runs off the 19th over bowled by Rasikh Salam. In the final over, Rashid hit Mukesh Kumar for two fours and a six but could not score the required 19 runs to take his team over the line.

Earlier in the game, half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel helped DC recover from 44 for 3 and post a big total of 224 for 4 in 20 overs. Pant remained unbeaten on 88 runs off just 43 balls with the help of five fours and eight sixes. On the other hand, Axar scored 66 runs.

"I think we played some really good cricket, disappointing to lose in the end, but great character shown by everyone. Great fight till the end and we never thought we were out of the game at any point. When you're chasing 224, there's no point in talking about plans, just go out and score runs," said Shubman Gill after the loss.

Shubman Gill on poor finish with the ball:

Speaking further, Shubman Gill rued his team's failure to finish strongly with the ball. In the last three overs, DC scored as many as 67 runs including 31 runs in the final over bowled by Mohit Sharma. At the same time, the GT skipper was not very hard on his teammates as he pointed out that there was very little room for mistake on the 'smallish ground'.

"At one stage, we thought we would be able to restrict them to 200-210, but we gave away some extra runs in the last 2-3 overs. But this is a smallish ground, we spoke about the same when we went out to chase.

"Execution becomes very important, if there's a set batter or a finisher, you'll have to execute well. It's okay if there's something in the wicket, but on pitches like this, you'll have to make sure that you execute all your plans perfectly, be it the yorkers or the variations,"
said Shubman Gill.

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals, on Wednesday (April 24), returned to winning ways with a thrilling 4-run win over Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Asked to bat first, DC were reeling at 44 for 3 inside the powerplay before half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel rescued the hosts. The duo shared a 113-run stand for the fourth wicket. Noor Ahmad broke the stand in the 17th over by dismissing Axar for 66.

Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 88 off 43 balls with the help of five fours and eight sixes. He and Tristan Stubbs shared a staggering unbeaten 67-run stand in just 18 balls to help DC finish with 224/4 in 20 overs. In reply, GT finished their innings on 220/8. Sai Sudharsan and David Miller scored half-centuries but their efforts were not enough for GT to avoid a second defeat against DC in IPL 2024.

Rishabh Pant on the win:

Speaking after the end of the game, Rishabh Pant began by explaining his decision to give the ball to Rasikh Salam for the 19th over and not Anrich Nortje. The DC skipper stated that he just preferred the bowler who was having a better game. In the 17th over, Nortje conceded 24 runs. Rasikh, on the other hand, conceded 18 runs in the 19th over after giving away 26 runs in his first three overs.

"Nortje was having a tough time. T20 is a funny game, after 14-15 overs the ball was coming on nicely. So we wanted to trust Rasikh, always trust someone who is bowling well in a game. I think it is about instincts as a captain, it will come off sometimes. Happy it worked today," said Rishabh Pant.

Rishabh Pant further spoke about his and Axar Patel's gameplan when they joined hands in the middle after DC were reduced to 44 for 3. He ended by expressing his delight over returning to action and getting the time to spend time on the field.

"Surely at 43/3, we wanted to just keep going and target their main spinners. If we get something, we will take it on and keep rotating the strike.

"Every day that I'm in the middle, I feel better. Every hour on the field matters, I love being on the field. I try to give it my 100% and it takes some time sometimes. I think the first six in the match gives me confidence in a game. The more time I spend in the centre, the better I feel,"
added Pant who was also adjudged the Player of the Match.

Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar has heaped praise on Kuldeep Yadav and said that the left-arm spinner should be a certainty for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

The former cricketer's comment came after the chinaman spinner impressed with the ball against Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday (April 24). In a game where almost 450 runs were score in 40 overs, Kuldeep Yadav showed his class by bowling a fine spell. He conceded 29 runs in his four overs and picked up two crucial wickets for his side.

The left-arm spinner broke the 82-run stand between Wriddhiman Saha and Sai Sudharsan by dismissing the former to give his side a much-needed breakthrough. Later, he dismissed the dangerous Rahul Tewatia for just 4 runs in the 16th over to put DC in the driver's seat.

Kuldeep Yadav's spell proved crucial for DC as they won the thrilling game by just four runs. After scoring 224/4, DC managed to restrict GT to 220/8 to register a much-needed win and remain in contention for the playoffs. With the spinner impressing once again, Sanjay Manjrekar heaped praise on him.

Speaking on Star Sports, the former cricketer-turned-commentator stated that Kuldeep has sealed his spot in the World Cup side. He went on to say that Kuldeep is at his peak and is commanding the sort of respect that the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal do.

"Yes. And this is perhaps Kuldeep Yadav at his peak with regards to his skills, his confidence. You can see now he's out there like a Bumrah or Chahal at his peak. He is commanding that kind of respect. He looks comfortable with the responsibility and champions, you know, those breaks and those moments that you are seeking at the right time," said Sanjay Manjrekar.

No place for Yuzvendra Chahal:

Speaking further, Sanjay Manjrekar snubbed Yuzvendra Chahal as he picked India's spinners for the T20 World Cup. The former cricketer stated that Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav should be the two spinners in the team for the marquee event.

"Last over today, DC wanted a wicket. They got the wicket of Tewatia there and just seized the game. So this is where Kuldeep has now become a champion bowler and he is somebody I mean that we should pencil down. Ravindra Jadeja will come in as a left-arm spinner batter and Kuldeep the second spinner," said Manjrekar.

Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have had a horror run in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) so far. The three-time IPL finalists are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table with just one win from eight games.

They began their season with a loss against defending champions Chennai Super Kings before beating Punjab Kings to get off the mark in IPL 2024. Since then, they have lost six games in a row. They are the only team in IPL 2024 who are yet to win more than one game.

The way things have gone so far, it looks like RCB might end another season without winning the IPL. They are one of the only three teams who are playing in the IPL from the very first season but are yet to win the league. The Bengaluru-based outfit needs a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes to qualify for the playoffs first before they can dream about the trophy.

Playoffs qualification scenario for RCB:

With six defeats in a row and seven defeats in eight games, RCB's chance of qualifying for the IPL playoffs is extremely low but not zero. The Faf du Plessis-led side can still make it to the top four although their fate is not in their hands anymore.

Although the chance of making it to the playoff is very less, RCB are still alive in the ongoing IPL 2024. For that to happen, they first need to win their remaining six league games. It will help them finish the league stage on 14 points. At that stage, if other results go their way, RCB could make it to the top four without the Net Run-Rate coming into play.

For that to happen, the top two or three teams need to win as many games as possible and leave the last playoffs spot up for grabs. Usually seven wins are enough to qualify for the playoffs and RCB could still do it if they manage to win their remaining six games. RCB could make it to the playoffs even if they finish with 12 points. In that scenario too, they need a lot of results to go their way.

Ranji Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to take another big step to make domestic cricket more appealing for the cricketers. The board has taken several steps in recent times to ensure that the players give due importance to domestic cricket.

Earlier this year, the BCCI issued a directive to the players as it made it mandatory for the cricketers to represent their state teams when they are not playing for Team India. The board had to take the step after several players avoided playing in the Ranji Trophy to keep themselves fit for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The BCCI is now reportedly considering increasing the remuneration for domestic players. While the board is yet to take a final call on the matter, it has given the responsibility to the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel to come up with suggestions on how to implement the idea.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI is unlikely to make an immediate announcement about the increase in match fees. However, the national selection panel has discussed the proposal. By increasing the remuneration, the BCCI wants to make sure that the domestic players, who do not have IPL contracts, do not feel deprived.

BCCI to double the fees of domestic cricketers:

While the BCCI is yet to take a final call on the matter, all the concerned parties believe that the fees for the domestic cricketers has to be doubled at least. There is also a proposal that the domestic players should be earning between INR 75 lakh to INR 1 crore annually if they have played 10 Ranji Trophy games per season.

At present, a player earns INR 60,000 a day if he has played more than 40 Ranji games, INR 50,000 who has played between 21 and 40 games and INR 40,000 for someone who has featured in 20 games. On the other hand, the reserve players get between INR 30,000, INR 25,000 and INR 20,000 in the respective categories.

As per the existing payment scale, a senior player would be earning up to INR 25 lakh if his side reaches the final while others in the side making between INR 17 lakh and INR 22 lakh. The BCCI is now keen to ensure that the earning of the domestic players is increased substantially from the upcoming season.

BCCI's main aim is to ensure that the players prioritize red-ball cricket. There have been suggestions from several quarters to increase the fees of the players and the board is finally working on it. Last month, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced an incentive of ₹45 lakh per game for the players who would play 75% or more of the scheduled Test games in a particular season.

Following the announcement, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar had suggested that the BCCI should increase the fees of the domestic cricketers as well.

"If the Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, certainly there'll be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, and a lot less pullouts from the Ranji Trophy, because if the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match are a good fee, there will be fewer people pulling out for various reasons," Gavaskar had said.

The Pat Cummins-led team will face the Bengaluru team at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday, April 25. SRH set a record-breaking score of 287/3 during their previous match against RCB, marking the highest-ever total in the history of the tournament.

The Faf du Plessis-led team managed to score 262 runs for the loss of seven wickets during the run chase. The two teams collectively scored a record-breaking total of 549 runs in the match. The RCB team will be hoping for an improved bowling performance in the upcoming match.

The Bengaluru-based team suffered a narrow one-run loss in a 223-run chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the previous game. Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, registered a massive 67-run victory against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

You Are Too Good Pat - Virat Kohli

Ahead of the intense match, RCB posted a video interaction between Virat Kohli and Pat Cummins on its social media account. The two players engaged in light-hearted banter during a practice session. The SRH captain walked up to Kohli, who was sitting on the ground after training.

Cummins stated that the RCB coach thought he was making the pitch look flat. Kohli praised the Australian pacer for his abilities, stating, "You are too good, Pat."

"The coach was saying I was making that wicket look flat. That's all I heard," Cummins said.

"You are too good Pat," Kohli responded.

Wasim Akram and Hardik Pandya

Former Pakistan fast bowling legend Wasim Akram has become the latest to slam and criticize Mumbai Indians fans for booing their skipper Hardik Pandya.

Wasim Akram made these comments during his recent appearance in Sportskeeda's post-match IPL show wherein he extended his support to Hardik Pandya. The Baroda-born all-rounder who was with the Gujarat Titans over the last two seasons, returned to his first IPL outfit back in November 2023.

What should Hardik and MI do in their last 6 league matches?

Since then, MI fans have made it a routine to troll and mentally harass Hardik Pandya, who switched his allegiance back to MI mainly for captaincy. But the 2024 IPL season hasn't panned out the way he would have expected as the Mumbai Indians have consistently struggled to win matches against big opposition.

The 5-time champions are currently languishing in the 8th position with just 3 wins to their name against Bengaluru, Delhi, and Punjab. Hardik Pandya's side has lost 5 of their 8 league matches on the way and if they want to qualify for the playoffs, then they must win all of their matches from now on.

Their next (9th) league match is against an in-form Delhi Capitals team which won their tie against Gujarat Titans last night. MI had defeated DC in their previous meeting and they must look to do the same in the reverse fixture.

What did Wasim Akram say in support of Hardik Pandya?

During his recent appearance in Sportskeeda's post-match IPL show, Wasim Akram had words of support for Hardik Pandya. Akram first pointed out the problem that lies within the Indian fan base and claimed that the fans rarely move on or forget these types of things.

The former KKR bowling coach also stated that MI fans should not treat Hardik Pandya the way they have been doing all this while. Akram instead suggested the Mumbai fans back their captain as he is one of the best match-winners around and that there is no point in booing a player who has represented the national team as well.

Wasim Akram lastly said that MI fans can criticize Pandya a little bit but they must also learn how to move on from such things.

"This is the problem in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. We never forget. We tell our kids that when Pandya's kid is born, you have to remind him why he became captain 20 years ago. We don't move on."I think fans need to be a little calm. At the end of the day, he is your player. He plays for Mumbai Indians, and he is the one who can make you win. There is no point booing your own player. You can criticize a little bit, but move on." - Akram said Sportskeeda.

Akram says Rohit Sharma should have continued

Wasim Akram then said that the Mumbai Indians management should have waited for another season before appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain. The former left-arm seamer feels that Rohit Sharma should have been given another season in the captaincy role and then in 2025, they should have turned to Pandya.

"In my view, Rohit Sharma should have continued as captain for one more year. Perhaps, next year, Hardik Pandya could have been the captain." - Wasim Akram concluded.
